I went to school with a grade 8 flautist that played the recorder, something I used to find funny because everyone knows that recorders sound like blackbirds in distress... until he played it for me and I was legitimately blown away. Likely a combination of it being made of proper materials and him having genuine musical talent but I was taken aback that it was possible for it to not sound like garbage.
@drpibisback76803 жыл бұрын
A trained flautist will understand breath control in a way that a little kid in elementary school music class will not. Recorders usually sound like blackbirds in distress because little children don't understand that blowing too hard makes the pitch go sharp and the tone screechy - the same effect as is often used on purpose in Free Jazz saxophone playing. Materials play a part and talent certainly aids picking up the skill, but just having some basic training beyond a teacher saying "blow into this and do this sequence of fingerings" will make even a shitty recorder sound like a real instrument.

Trying to play a recorder with effects is like trying to talk after inhaling helium. Once the first word comes out of your mouth, all you can do is laugh. But if you want to really laugh try your voice on sulfer hexafluride. Now that I think of it, I wonder if breathing either of these gases while playing a recorder or any wind instrument would change its tone as well?

I can't get over the awesome combo of the Dark Star and the Nepenthes.-wow! Does the string spacing of that harp differ greatly from pedal harp or larger/floor lever harps? That harp is so beautiful, but I'm not sure if I'd get thrown off when switching between harps. Thanks!
@emilyharpist3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Anna!! 🥰❤️ the string spacing on the Serrana is definitely a lot tighter than my Camac Little Big Blue or my Salvi Daphne - the only time I encountered any problems was when I was going from a LONG practice session on the Serrana straight into working on my Camac pedal harp. I wasn’t stretching my left hand octaves far enough, because my brain thought they were a lot closer than they were 😂 but in general I never have any issues; the spacing weirdness feeling goes away with a 5 minute warmup! 💖
@annaportillo10163 жыл бұрын
@@emilyharpist I know what you mean. I have an Ogden and a small 27-string and sometimes the tighter tension of the gut strings makes it tricky to later play the lighter tension of my nylon strings.
