Can Exxon Mobil Actually Reduce Its Climate Emissions?

For years, Exxon Mobil was one of the largest publicly-traded companies in the United States. Coming climate legislation may target the core of the oil and gas giant's operation: production and exploration. The company says it will pivot. But the plan relies on capturing carbon from the oil it will keep pumping in the future. Watch the video to see what experts think of Exxon's green economy plans.
Oil giant Exxon Mobil, once the most valuable company in the U.S., is fighting for its future.
Over the summer, investors forced a change on Exxon’s board. Since then, the company has been speeding up plans for its green economy pivot, which includes carbon capture and storage.
Carbon capture is the process of capturing CO2 at its source. Companies can store the carbon dioxide permanently, but it is more profitable and common to use the captured carbon in further fossil fuel production.
Congressional researchers say U.S. companies have pioneered the technology worldwide, injecting roughly 68 million metric tons of carbon dioxide back into the ground every year.
Exxon Mobil recently announced a plan to increase the amount of carbon it captures from its refineries near Houston, Texas. The company says it has captured 40% of the world’s captured carbon to date.
But another count from the investors at Engine No. 1 suggests that Exxon may be capturing less than 1% of its own annual emissions on a rolling basis. This count includes Scope 3 emissions, a much broader accounting of a company’s planet warming potential. Exxon Mobil publicly disclosed an estimate of its Scope 3 emissions for the first time in 2021.
The company told CNBC it will try to flatten its production of fossil fuels through 2025, depending on market conditions. More changes could come as regulators around the world zero in on climate.
But carbon market scholar Kate Ervine said that “the devil is in the details” when it comes to writing climate policies that affect oil and gas majors.

Yes but the entire issue of fuel prices is to a large extent another media/government lie or canard if you will. Firstly inflation adjusted fuel prices are far lower that prior peaks, there are now readily available non-organic solar and wind alternatives , and despite all this people are out on the roads in increasingly large number in fuel driven vehicles (they vote for fuel vehicles with their dollars knowing full. well and obviously accepting the value proposition) also the government of course is very disingenuous - if they truly wanted immediate relief at the pump they would reduce or eliminate the substantial taxes that contribute in many place a great deal to the pump prices. Here again the media by refusing to provide alternative viewpoints to the accepted approved narrative completely block a more full and complete discussion of the issues.

Fun fact: Burning 1 gallon of gasoline emits about 20lbs of CO2. That’s kind of fascinating considering a gallon of gasoline only weighs 6.5 lbs per gallon. The reason is the chemical equation for combustion adds A lOT of O2 the a fossil fuel to get energy. All of that oxygen is where the extra weight comes from.

We all just saw the video with Keith McCoy, one of the top lobbyists at Exxon Mobil. Exxon is going to engage in a PR campaign of supporting a carbon tax, but in reality they are going to continue to lobby law makers to protect fossil fuel development. Exxon Mobil was one of the top companies that engaged in a campaign of misinformation on climate change for over 40 years. The idea that Exxon would change its business is a total fantasy.

What we should be doing is investing in Synthetic fuels, If done right and using renewable resources to create synthetic fuels will be clean. Getting rid of all the current ICE vehicles isn't the answer, think about how much resources it would take to rid of all these current vehicles on the road It's going to hurt the planet at the same time. We still use plastics. Farming and actual high torque / energy intensive machinery still use diesel (and EVs are unlikely to replace them). Gas is an important source of electricity and heating. My money is on Exxon. I dont think oil and gas is going anywhere.

There's a vast difference between "still using" something, and the profitability of a company. 1. Plastics are a high margin, low volume business. They are not a key driver in the profitability of integrated oil and gas companies. 2. Farming vehicles constitute only a minority of vehicles. A collapse in gasoline demand will have a disastrous impact on oil margins, made worse by the fact that oil demand and supply is inherently inelastic. 3. Gas is a high volume, low margin business. Natural gas use for power generation is on the rise, but increasing electrification (even if powered by NG) is eroding the much more profitable petroleum business. Most of the big bucks aren't coming from the high volume, low margin developing countries. They come from selling gasoline in rich countries, which are now rapidly decarbonising. A $61 exxon stock may not go to zero, but I'd be pretty bummed if I was holding one and it dropped to $20.

Any 'carbon tax' will need to be properly calculated & appropriated. Otherwise, most companies simply PAID THE FINES for illegal dumping, environmental penalties, spills, lawsuits, etc. Why? And since almost all companies charge a margin increase; more expensive commodities means more profit for the same amount of volume. Standard Oil didn't seize the oil trade, it created it. It did not have a monopoly. It was not immune from competition. Only the government can create genuine monopolies through the use of special protections.

Standard Oil was found guilty in the Sherman Antitrust Act. Which prohibits 1) anticompetitive agreements and 2) unilateral conduct that monopolizes or attempts to monopolize the relevant market. Rockefeller would go to a region, sell oil for the fraction of the market price, outcompete and buy the competition, and close them afterwards. That's predatory pricing, and at least an attempt to create a monopoly. Also, saying that a monopoly is impossible without protections has no basis. If a company controls most of the industry, which Standard Oil had, it is by definition a monopoly.

One-third of the CO2 in our atmosphere is due to human activity, meaning we've increased natural CO2 levels by 50%. Half of our emissions happened in just the past 3 decades. We’ve fundamentally changed the composition of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. There is no option other than stopping emissions, unless people just don’t care about the next generation at all. We are a lot better off shifting now than waiting. It’s far cheaper and less damaging to deal with it today.

Make the carbon tax a reality. The government needs money and these companies have too much from destroying the planet. To help cut down gas emissions, take public transportation, walk , e- bike (weather permitting) cut your trips, car pool. Limited air pollution. Sounds like same old same old, because it is. Off the subject, but not off the subject, shortly after a three year pandemic, the above statement was encouraged except for e- bike, but used a racing bike or your standard one- two speed bicycle for transportation. The 55 speed on the interstate high way (yes, some state in sections it's still have that speed limited, they actually found the car accident rate went down in that section) was put in place along with turn right on red unless posted, with no one coming, along limited your car warming up time was put in place during the 70s due to the gas shortage. And yes the price of fuel went up, the cost food double, food and house hold supplies shortage, lay offs, cut work hrs, business closed. The difference today is, people wages were far less, depending on the state/ job or company you worked for, one state minimum wage 1. 40 - 1.80 an hour went up to 2.40 dollars an hour. Depending on your company/ your work, some based on union or who still had a union. Benifits or no to little Benifit. Early 70s The Republican President/ Representatives cut the amount of Child tax credit, child care deduction, cut taxed deduction milage claims to travel to work (deduction was if you lived more than 20 miles from your work) was just some of the cuts they made, at that time. Their cuts did not Benifit the citizens. If anything it more if a hard ship on them.

This carbon emission stuff really penalize companies which produce carbon related products, to an extent that they are not willing to invest in new capital of extracting more oil from oil field. Now as the gas price goes higher, then people starts to complain about it, and President Biden urged OPEC+ to pump more oil in order to reduce the price of gasoline....You see the problem here? Why people complain about the price of gas, if they want green energy? Why government penalizes oil producers and also asks them to produce more oil ? Oxymoron behavior? you bet. Let's face it, we can not live without carbon resources. How about solar, battery, or wind energy? Nope, they are indirectly carbon based as well. Only after one realize this, can one start to act sensibly and rationally. In Australia, coal is one of the major export goods and profit generator. But it appears that coal is not counted as carbon emission in Australia because they do not use it. Go figure. Unless we are willing to reduce our own carbon footprint, and pay for the higher user fees, it will be hard to achieve the green house effect goal by 2050. Pointing fingers to others will not work.
