I don't fully remember the math behind the original ELO (Chess Elo, Elo is a surname of a mathematican that invented it - Arpad Elo), but IIRC every 100 elo means you double your odds. Obviously 1000 elo vs 1000 elo is 50%-50%, and so is 3000 elo vs 3000 elo, but at 3100 vs 3000 you would have 2:1 meaning ~66% win ratio, at 3200 vs 3000 you would have ~3:1 so ~75% win ratio. That means that if flash had 3400 and second best player had 3000, that means he would have to have ~5:1 win ratio (win 5 lose 1), ~83% win ratio, against 2nd world best to keep that elo difference.

Following this logic, your conclusion is not quite correct ... if a 3100 vs 3000 had a 2:1 win-ratio and a 3200 vs 3000 also had a 2:1 win-ratio, that would mean that a 3200 vs 2000 has already a 4:1 win ratio, a 3300 vs 3000 a 8:1 and 3400 vs 3000 16:1 win-ratio, which would be about a 94% win ratio... edit: I just looked up an ELO-probability table, and a 400 point ELO-lead is indeed about 91% win-ratio

That only applies in games with perfect information (no fog of war) and no randomness (spawn locations, % to miss up higher elevation, attack order between workers) it's why artosis complains about nexus first builds from protoss on 4 player maps, it's a 1/3 chance you are up ahead(cross spawn) and 2/3 behind. if you are 500 elo behind the opponent and have a ~16.6% of winning on skill alone, risky builds are much more appealing

I’ve noticed that unlike Flash in the past, if this really is Flash, he doesn’t target fire tanks very well like he used to. He used to redirect tank fire to goons to prevent splash onto his vultures.

And you also have to remember he probably will never be the micro monster he used to be again because of his hand injury. I mean, he literally has a huge scar on his hand and there were games of him trying to use Mec against Zerg because he doesn't want to use that micro-intensive bio composition.

Those early goliaths were huge. Mid game flash lacked those goliaths and I think it hurt him the most not having anything for the speed shuttles.

I was wondering why these Flash game casts are so important. The simple answer is: when we play, we use builds/meta created by someone, and when Flash plays he sets the meta and solutions itself. That's why it's worth following his progress.

except for remastered, which patched the valkyrie glitch and the spider mine glitch. it caused valks to not fire if you had 5 or 6 of them or more. and caused spider mines not to activate if you planted too many

While true, ladder matches have to be taken with a grain of salt. In a tournament, the goal of each player is to win. On the ladder, the goal could be practice, it could be to collect data on how an opponent responds to a particular strategy, etc., and there's an incentive to not give away any of your secrets even if that results in a loss.

Wisdom on this game. Flash turrets and mines were super annoying. Range defensive storms killed more of flash army than all his engages.

Flash ran out of gas at the end. His only two bases were mineral-only, and his only gas income was from depleted refineries.

This build doesn't seem like it has any viability against a better Protoss. Snow would probably still have his shuttle and 7 or 8 goons at the end of the first engagement and Flash would have to remass and probably still can't take his 3rd, meanwhile Snow is on 5 bases and 10+ gates.

This was an amazing watch, the back and forth was so intense, any time Range seemed to have an advantage (which he created quite a lot for himself throughout the game) Flash would always punish the weaker side. Like when those goons were sent to clear the top left base and Flash counter attacked, his units moved incredibly swiftly to execute.

True but I also think him having so few Goliaths for most of the game really hurt him. I know they are less efficient but it let range punish him with shuttles in a lot of spots. Just basing this on other top modern terrans who at least try to keep 3 minimum to counter shuttles

I feel like you got to add more goliaths to counter shuttles, right? Also, I wonder if Terran players have been under-utilizing Depots as a defense / sim city tool. A Depot is like 100 minerals? At 500 Hp, I feel like you could place Depots a little bit more forward to create choke points, forcing zealots together, screwing up AI, and tanking damage. Think of it as a defensive wall structure that also happens to increase your supply. -Someone who played this game 20 years ago and just watches Artosis.

Extremely intelligent analysis, learning about the meta and stuff. Most commentators (including GSL :/) would just describe what we're seeing on the screen and nothing else, like "he moved his tanks, oh he lost 2 tanks, there's a drop, he killed 10 workers ..., oh he's making a new base, oh he lost the fight ... look at the supply! ... and he GGs!!" without any explanation of why, if the timing is good/bad, if it's the correct strategy etc.

Gols are terrible against both zealot and goon. Maybe they pick off a shuttle or two, but then all the zealots would've been dropped earlier and rushed the tanks. Vultures wall off tanks so zealots can't rush them. Gols can't really do that because their pathing will make you pull out your hair.

@@gippygames Scan brings a group of 4 Gols with his pushes to keep zlot shuttles off of the tank lines and ensure that they have to get thinned out by the vultures before they get on the tanks. Having shuttles dropping zlots on your tank lines is unnecessary and ineffective.

If you ever wonder why less crisp or inexperienced players can scare an expert, but intermediate players rarely do, listen to the point starting at 3:28. Optimizing inefficiencies for mental pressure is part of the metagame when top players match one another. For another example, consider the card game Magic: the Gathering in Limited. A newbie to MtG has little concept of what open Mana means or sequencing can represent in a Limited environment. The proper play against them is to run out your hand and beat them down with card quality - intermediate players have a grasp on fundamentals, so they never struggle to do this. Yet you will see strong players get "too cute" in this same space against the same opponent. They won't lose, but the game won't feel as clinical. Why? It's common for experts and experts-to-be to bluff blowout interaction against one another. Maneuvering around all of this and playing odds tips percentages in their favor in ways that are difficult to see on the board. The newbie cannot see the inefficiencies in their own play or the possibility that represents... and part of becoming an expert is rediscovering that possibility space and exploiting it against opponents. It's called "good representation". It's why poker was revolutionized when TV started showing only the action hands and giving the viewers each hand's % to win. Once the newbie knows about the invisible, the game gains depth. All this to say Artosis is hitting a great point here most will skip over because "muh excuses for Terran iz hard". Speaking of metagame, glad we're out of the "lightfury" Twitch stream meta. That's a relief. Now to do something about Nintendo character fanfics.

9:42 slightly different read on this than RT. i get that range kinda semi-bungled that attack, but flash is spinnin 2-1, range has no army on the map, and flash's third is landing, and range's 5th isn't started. flash looks... fine actually! 10:30 jesus christ, that's a lot of turrets lol 11:52 i'm kinda starting to actually prefer flash' position. it was impressive that he got an equalish position after a slight mistake, while going fast 2/1. but now, this fourth is pretty much gonna land, and i think it's protoss's move. carriers will take a long time and end up against 3/2 which isn't wonderful, so i think protoss' best idea here might be to go arbiter, and take a ton of bases and try to hit flash whenever he moves, but flash is notoriously difficult to punish! Still staying on storm and speed shuttles against 4 base upgrade terran doesn't seem like it should work, i feel like you'll eventually get tank moded to death. 14:24 "becoming problematic for range" honestly he looks pretty dead rofl Flash has so much, his upgrades are so good, i'm a lot more optomistic about this game for flash than RT is, we'll see! 17:11 so the armies have traded, flash is taking a 5th, which.. can't be good for protoss, but i DO like that he's spinning 2 forges. hopeless to defend just mass tank mode tanks off of 4 gas if you don't get those. 18:52 anOTHER base for flash, wow, he's being very thorough here, but this is gonna be 5 gas. Non-carrier protoss should have trouble with 5 gas terran, that's going to be so many tanks. 20:15 yeah, flash is maxing and throwing away vultures to get bigger on tanks, this actually looks very very good to me. we'll see how range can hold off what i assume will be a tank-mode attack within about 5 minutes. 22:40 made it interesting! but i think flash''s army kills bases faster than range's here. this looks like flash's win to me. 26:02 ok these storms are kind of nuts... wow. getting very scrappy, supplies low, bases mining down, could be a weird one! AND FLASH RUNS OUT! wow, so i had a different take on the game than RT, storms looked insane to me and got range back into it when flash looked pretty good! thanks RT!

Upgrade terran is 100% gonna make a comeback with Flash. He knows how to do it correctly, so he'll make it work and dominate with it. Every active terran is several levels below peak Flash.
