Can foreign money save Turkey's economy?

Turkey has become a top destination for wealthy Gulf tourists injecting much-needed dollars into the country’s economy. But tourism is only a fraction of the capital pouring in from the Middle East.
Between 2016 and 2019, Qatar increased its investments in Turkey by nearly 500%, replacing countries like Germany and Russia as its second largest foreign direct investor.
Toward the end of 2021, a policy of détente toward Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates began, allowing Turkey to secure accords worth billions of dollars with its former rivals.
“Turkey has big gross external financing needs, which is basically demand for dollars,” said Timothy Ash, an emerging markets strategist at BlueBay Asset Management.
“It was logical to go offshore. Go abroad, try and find someone to give them the dollars.”
Since 2019, the Turkish central bank spent more than $100 billion to keep the lira afloat due to an ongoing currency crisis.
Gulf states offered relief, either in the form of currency swap lines or direct deposits. But critics warn these short-term measures to boost foreign exchange reserves may not cure the country’s chronic problems.
“Turkey is spending more than it can and it should. It borrows money from the so-called friendly countries to finance its short-term capital needs. This obviously cannot continue for a long time,” said Bilge Yilmaz, chief economist of the opposition Good Party.
Watch the video to understand why Turkey needs Gulf money.

The answer is no because ultimately here's the thing, Turkey needs to STOP playing FUNNY MONEY games. STOP. It doesn't work. Balance the budget, peg the Turkish lira to some kind of currency board. Turkey isn't just a great country, it is an absolutely FANTASTIC country (I've been there) and should be far far wealthier. Sound money and Turkey will quickly rise and be at least as wealthy as many parts of the EU.

Whoever follows Saudi Arabia in the Middle East will achieve stability and economic growth. Once Erdogan turned against MBS and the kingdom, his country suffered an economic crisis. I'm not biased but it's all facts. Saudi Arabia has the wealthy GCC countries under its umbrella + the closest strategic ally of the US + the closest economic ally of China + the leader of the most valuable resource on the planet along with Russia (OPEC +). Huge deals and investments in the EU, India and Egypt. Whether you like Saudi leaders or not, but you must admit that the leaders in the Kingdom know how to play chess in politics and use their money well to gain more power on the world stage. For example, Libya, Iraq, and Iran each one of them has more oil than Saudi Arabia, but they do not have a wise leadership that uses all these resources with mentality and balance!

What is this fuzz about Turkey needs money? Their debt to gdp ratio is half less than most of the european countries , 4 times less than Greece. Gdp growth is second in the world after China. If they need money they can borrow like other countries. Why dont you talk about already bankrupt European countries like Greece, Spain Italy England they are in debt up to their nose.

I assume a lot of priceless lands, historical landmarks, strategic technologies will be handed over for $$$ to keep the current govt stay afloat - not even keep the state afloat, but keep the current government afloat.

Turkish GDP in 2002 was $240.25B and its now $1.154 trillion Turkish Gov debt to gdp in 2002 was 75.5% and its now 31%... for comparison the UK is 101.2%😂 and in 2002 it was 86.3% Turkey has 41 companies in the ENR’s 2023 Top 250 International Contractors, the US has 41, Europe+UK has 44 and China has 78. Only China and S.Korea have bigger market share in the Middle East, In Africa they trail only China, France and Italy, in Latin America only the US, China, Spain, Italy and France and in Europe it is only Spain and Germany they trail. 😂😂

@@senaselen3120 No I'm a student at LSE... My professor explained it to me because my father works in import/export from Ankara to Baku to Delhi and he would always tell me currency is not economy. My professor explained how its from external pressures (usually politically motivated) from currency speculators that play games on the market with lira bonds. He also explained Turkey is acutely vulnerable because it imports so much energy... now you see all the nuclear plants under construction, the gasfield find, the new Azeri pipeline and then Libya to Turkey corridor are some of the projects to offset that.
