Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It is overrun by gangs, who have even forced the country's Prime Minister to resign. But how did things get so bad for Haiti? Part of the blame lies with Haiti's former colonial overlord, France. After Haiti defeated the French and won its independence in 1804, France wanted revenge. In 1825, it sent an armada to Haiti, and threatened the new country of free slaves. France demanded 150 million francs to allow Haiti to remain free. Haiti had no choice but to take the deal, and it spend 122 years paying the French debt. In today's terms, that comes to anywhere between $150-200 billion.

The massacre of Haitians in 1937, known as the Parsley Massacre, where more than 20,000 Haitians were brutally killed by Dominican forces under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. This horrific event was an act of xenophobic violence and ethnic cleansing perpetrated against Haitians living along the border region. 2. The revocation of citizenship rights in 2013 by the Dominican Constitutional Court, which affected tens of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent, rendering them stateless. This ruling retroactively stripped citizenship from individuals born in the Dominican Republic to undocumented Haitian migrants, leaving them vulnerable to deportation and discrimination. 3. Indeed they deserve to get refunded back with interest. The French lost and are sore losers. Unfortunately after Haiti’s won its independence they flourished for a few years, internal problems arised and stopped funding / spending on their military growth. The French capitalized on Haiti’s military weakness and internal problems. The US tried doing the same to the Dominican Republic but we stood ground and had a brutal dictator that ruled with an iron fist and eventually paid the debt in full to the US. In 1965 USA invaded again and the Dominican People fought back and the USA had no choice but to leave. The entire Latin America has been scrutinized over the years and have been the victims of western powers.

While I agree some form of repayment should be made, but it shouldn't be money. Haitian leaders cannot manage any funds, plus that money would never make it to Haiti. There's literally no government in Haiti right now so don't be fooled about those guys asking for France to repay. They're the same country members that never accepted Haiti as a free country post revolutions. France should be forced to help rebuild Haiti infrastructures, then stay out of Haiti business when done. Also, if anyone wants to help. They should be forcing US to remove the restrictions they have on Haiti and the Haitian army so the country can get help from other countries aside from US, Canada and France

Well said, chillout. It's a chilling thing you said. 1-Reparations must be made or paid for said amount (200 Bn) or its actual equivalent. 2- Yes, not in cash as you justly put it. It'd just be another Petro-Caribe disaster, FNE disaster, both highway robberies, and other similar thefts perpetrated and observed from earthquakes assistance to any other form of so-called AID or assistance or fund (FMI comes to mind), all, of international and domestic origins and collusions. 3- Half of that money 💰 would never make it to the country. And from the other half that reaches our shore, only 1 or 2% would actually be accounted for. The other 48%? Embezzled, swallowed up. 40% of it would go directly into the corrupted system and 8% into fake projects that would never be actualized, aka dilapidated as well, scammed. Yes, having France or better an independent "corps", "body" or party (if there is such a thing), and not associated in any shape or form with either France or any Haitian gov, to play supervisor, manager, overseer etc of rebuilding projects and chantiers of economic and technological developments (infrastructures and superstructures, education, agriculture, fishing, farming, energy (air, water, electricity), science (Architecture, engineering and medecine), tourism (import/"export" more importantly) and the big one, and that one would be new: Mining technology. Nationalized mining for oil and mining for special rocks and minerals. Alas, while there surely are better and more educated ideas out there, if France and /or the US, UK, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, were to humble themselves to a moral debt but also to accept financial responsibility and make reparations, to Haiti in particular. They might have had to do that as well to most of their former colonies in Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas and Caribbean, whose blood they suck and riches they lifted, a kind trade for stole. Ps: Constitutional reforms should also take place in order to guarantee lands to Haiti to Haitians of Haitian (African/Taino) ancestry not to discourage or limit international unions but to protect and ensure natuoonal ownership of the nation's lands and resources as well as ancestral integrity.

Haiti never won any war. Haitians were freed by the French themselves after the Revolution as the new values made slavery forbidden. What was the first thing Haitians did after they were freed? They tortured little girls and women to death, going door to door to genocide the French. I think instead of going all in on Algeria, the French should have brought their anger into Haiti instead and take back their colony.
