It's interesting to hear Elisa speaking English when I'm so accustomed to hearing her speak French. Her accent is interesting; it's fairly neutral, occasionally sounding British, sometimes French, but mostly a rather generic western European accent.

I really enjoyed this interview! Just a comment about your accent, it sounds quite British to me (I'm Canadian though, not an expert on British accents by any means). If I didn't have any background info I might guess that you weren't British, but I probably wouldn't be able to tell that you're French, your accent is very soft and charming!

What you described with changing your accent when you talk to British or Canadian people is actually a noted phenomenon. It's called "Code Switching," and native speakers even do it with other native speakers
@Aditya-te7oo
@Aditya-te7oo 3 жыл бұрын
Charlie I don't think it's called code switching 'cause in code switching people change language(s) consciously and here people change one's accent subconsciously.

I'm the exact same way with accents! I remember when I spent a week in Dublin I gained an Irish accent just from interacting with people with that accent so much. And I had to fight tooth and nail to keep my New England accent when I was at uni in Pennsylvania

12:19 When Elisa says "New year, I was like, OK...", the French subtitles translate this as "j'étais genre". I can't find this expression. Does it mean "I was kind of..."?

In this context, I think "je me suis dit" would have been a better french translation. "Je me suis dit" means "I said to myself".

Here in Quebec it’s very common, it might also be in France I’m not sure. It basically has the same meaning as “I was like”. Just as with like, it’s also used as a filler word a lot.

I disagree with with focusing on pronunciation. In Canada we focus on that when being able to communicate is more important. À mon avis, pouvoir transmettre un message ou s'exprimer est plus important que pouvoir parler de manière plus francophone.

I didn't start getting really serious with french until I was in my early 40s. Because I realized with youtube you can find all kinds of things to watch. So yeah it's very possible to do. It just takes tons of listening and reading and practicing. Like I would advise watching several hours a week for a year. It's like learning to play piano. It takes a lot of commitment and time.
