Had to come back to comment to this video after I just put some Fane F70 speakers in my Bogner 4x12 last weekend mixed with some V30s. I think you may have done the same mistake I did at first of wiring the Fanes with reverse polarity and ending up with a cabinet that suddenly sounded trebly and thin 😅 I had to confirm the + and - terminals from Fane as they are not marked as usually on speakers and after fixing that up the speakers sound great along with the V30s. Possibly a bit more treble than V30s but a much more pleasant midrange and great bass response. They sound nothing like the example on this video.
@Eliphas_Elric
@Eliphas_Elric Жыл бұрын
Yeah something was fucked up in this video. The F70 in my cab sounds godlike, full, and a little darker than the Chinese V30's my cab had previously. More presence maybe, but a much less spikey mid range that feels smoother and darker.
@jonathantrengove9701

good to hear something different. While I use my V30 ENGL cab, I never use the same microphones as everyone else, and stick to the Aussie made Rode microphones. Even that gives a huge variety in sound, and if you mix them together on a crappy old style Behringer mixer (like Glenn talked about in one of his videos), the combination of the condenser and dynamic is massive.

@@ed_weird see, that's SO amazing. Definitively the C12N was not "designed" to play metal. It's a vintage reissue, and the original has been engineered 60 years ago, in the early '60s. It is the speaker in many blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb and Twin Reverb. It's considered an excellent choice for clean/surf/chicago blues/country/rock'n roll/rockabilly tones. Still, in a certain cab, with a certain amp, and a certain player... it does make a good metal noise. All is relative and nothing is absolute :) Love that you're happy with it!

@@JensenSpeakersVideos That's the same description I found on C12N, and I had doubts that it'll work for metal at first, so did some searching and found the video on this same channel about a year ago about Jensen speakers that are good for metal! The Goodmans 50 watt Power Range 12P is a great sounding speaker. The earlier Goodmans small green label 25 watt speakers were also used in the original Laney LA412 LEAD100 cabs from 1969-1971 after that the speaker was no longer made. Have them here and demo'd them. The Beatles VOX cabs had the earlier Goodmans Silver Label speakers a bit more nasal then the later models. All very cool sounding speakers. I was going to guess the vintage as the middle one, it had a kind of more round tone, I like it. It’s more smooth sounding than the Marsland speakers in the mid 1970s Traynor amps. I liked the Jensen and the Goodman. I was surprised that the neo speaker sounded that nice. I just bought a Tonker and preferred the heavy one over the neo version, I like it for what I record which is more folk/country/blues.

Those Audiom 12's come in a few types. And you see them talked about being used for Laney/Sabbath. The 12P-D was designed for high quality PA systems and is very flat. They sound great in a speaker cab. However there is the 12P-G that was designed for Guitars but is quite spiky around 3K. There is also the standard 12P that was more of a workhorse, but the frequency response is closer to the G on paper. The 12P and 12P-G roll off from about 3K once peaked where as the 12P-D stays flat to around 10K.

For what it's worth, with my aged, slightly damaged audio sensory system (some call it "hearing"), and through some not-great monitor speakers, I think the Jensen (#1) will cut through and sound great in a mix. @@Spoofaged yeah idk what was happening here the F70 is darker than a v30 or a Creamback, with a very warm sweet upper midrange. It's not spiky at all. Maybe his mic control was messed up and moved the mike to the center of the dustcap? Idk, that or he had a faulty speaker. In the room it's not piercing or bright, and every single comment on the gear page about it describes it as darker and all the tone clips other people have made don't sound anything like this. Maybe the guitar tone was just dialed in to the goodman and the treble and presence were WAY to high for a speaker as clear and balanced as the F70.

I find speakers to be problem solvers, not that one is better than the other. Depending on the amplifier and guitar pickups, I will choose a speaker to complement the tone. Ever follow guys who will modify an amplifier so it doesn’t sound like a wet towel over the cabinet? Chuck in a bright speaker, and more often than not you solved the issues of a dark sounding amplifier. Works in reverse, you know those dark sludgy sounding speakers? Use it in conjunction with a really bright amplifier, you might be amazed. I always, always, always will change out speakers to get the tones I want. And if all else fails, then consider doing mods to the electronics. But trying to get more clarity and high end with a combo amplifier that has dark woolly speakers by modding the electronics is kind of lame.

It's interesting that all the F70 owners in the comments here have pointed out something is fucked up with the F70 here (wired out of phase maybe?) and neither you or Glenn have ever revisted it to correct yourself.

@@KohleAudioKult Then I have no idea what's going on here because none of my experiences using a F70 (either in a cab in the room, micd, or IRs) sound anything like this. Maybe it's just a case of the tone being dialed into those really dark Goodmans left the Fane sounding thin and trebbly but I find I have to turn the treble up with F70s compared to celestions.
