Can Growing Organs in Pigs Solve the Organ Shortage? | Freethink On the Fringe

America is in the middle of an organ crisis. 20 people die every day in the U.S. waiting for a transplant and over 100,000 people are on waiting lists. However, some researchers think they have a solution -- growing human organs inside animals. One of companies pioneering this approach is Recombinetics which raises genetically-modified pigs to grow human cells, tissues, and organs. Human stem cells are inserted into the animals to create “chimeras”. Could this strange idea be the key to helping people everywhere getting the life-saving organs they need?

what happens to the pig after the organ is "harvested" from them? Also, of course someone who needs the organ would say that they don't mind harvesting the organ from a pig but that does not make it ethical. in fact their judgement of the ethics of the situation is clouded by their own need for an organ.

You can eat it? What is wrong with this? We have used pigs for hundreds of things already, for hundreds of years. Why not this? We used to take insulin from them, we use their skin and they are delicious. Why not this? Is this more wrong then eating them or?

Hey, we appreciate the questions! We're happy to clear a few things up. The process of removing the organ does, in fact, kill the pig. However, afterwards they are not used for meat consumption. These are reasonable ethical questions that it is important to explore. As some other commenters have brought up, we do use pigs for meat, leather and other products. While many people are vegetarians, few people would argue that meat should be illegal. In that light - why would it be okay to take a pigs life to provide a person a sandwich, but not okay to provide them a kidney necessary to save their life? It is also worth noting that these animals are raised in much better conditions than many animals raised for meat; does their quality of life change the ethics of taking it in order to save someone else's? There's different answers to these questions and may depend on our personal beliefs, but it's an important conversation to have - and one that is just beginning.

Freethink that’s really wasteful to just use a pig for one organ and then kill it and not use it for its meat. That’s selfish and incredibly wasteful. No. Their quality of life doesn’t change the fact that all of the pig, except for ONE SINGLE ORGAN and then is being thrown away. If they are living better than meat pigs then improve the lives of meat pigs too. Why not use the pig for both it’s meat and it’s organs. Why not create multiple organs in one pig and use the remaining portion for meat. I just cannot see why this current use of a pig would be okay. I don’t eat pig meat and I don’t plan on it but at least use all of the pig and not throw it away. That doesn’t pay hommage to the pig’s life and it doesn’t value the pigs life. This is just wrong. They need to do better before it’s anything more than humanity exploiting nature for its own selfish reasons. We should be pouring the money for this research into more ethical ways to get organs.

It's so easy for me to take modern technologies for granted, to forget just how quickly and recently they appeared, and to think nothing so impressive as the internet could be conceived within my lifetime. But this is beautiful. I see no moral issues with this, so long as the edited pigs are not consumed (not to say I'm closed to debating such a thing). The idea that if one of my organs were to fail, one could just be grown in the span of months rather than decades regardless of it's vitality to the donor (heart vs kidney) brings me emotion beyond my capacity for articulation.

I think this should be fully legal. It would greatly help people. I think it is worth saving a human life in expense of killing a pig even if it means only harvesting a single organ. For those saying that doing this doesnt do justice to the pig, why would we even have that discussion if the whole goal is to harvest organs for our own benefit in the first place? Its pretty obvious why we would use the pig, of course it is for our own benefit.

Our relationship with our fellow Humans has been pretty complicated as well... The fascinating thing about reading the points of view of those who grew up in a time when slavery was considered acceptable, is just that, it was considered acceptable. They for the most part weren't the comically villainous portrayals of slave masters in movies depicting a more savage time, but just people like you and me. People who drew a line between those who deserved to be treated with the same kindness they themselves wished to be treated with, and those to whom they could treat without regard to their sentience and sleep easy with their action. It also amazes me how each generation thinks that they're the one's who have morality all figured our and look back on their ancestors as barbarians for their cruel actions, yet are always surprised and angered that a minority (who often become the majority in time) tell them their actions are evil and history will not look kindly upon them. So without getting bogged down into a conversation around meta-ethics, about the fundamental nature of good and evil, let us instead deduce the morality of animal welfare using logic to determine whether or not our treatment of animals is consistent with the moral compass calibration most of us subscribe to. You believe it would be morally wrong to harvest Human organs in the manor you believe it is morally right to do so with pigs. This implies there is a difference (or a combination of differences) between Humans and pigs that justifies those sentient being being brought into this world with their execution date already planned, and immoral to do the same to the later. What ever the difference or differences between Humans and pigs, surely if said difference(s) were found to apply to a Human it would justify they same treatment, no? If there is no nameable difference, then there is no difference that makes the same action moral to one species and not the other.

Well said, bro. I think that our desire to live blinds our judgment and we do things to other creatures in the name of "human progress". Think of climate change, is it not the result of humanity thinking they had the right to take and cut every tree, hunt evey animal and harvest every resource? The feeling that we are better or superior to pigs justifies these same idea, but really? I think we aren't meant to live forever, yet in our desperate desire trying to beat death we end up causing suffering to them, our little brothers and our mother, the planet. Just my humble opinion.

I love this. I had no idea we were already allowing this kind of research. Some people will be against it as being very unethical, however we still do kill a lot of these animals daily. I doubt the number of pigs used in research will even be 1% of how many we slaughter. Thumbs crossed for all the poor souls waiting for that vital organ. I hope we advance past these problems and eventually no killing or death will take place. :)

IndigoXYZ18 Tbh pigs don't need as much for a fulfilling life as humans do. They don't have deep philosophical outlooks, they can't recognize themselves in the mirror. They don't understand suicide or the fact they are alive just to die. But aren't we all in a way? Anyway, if we could grow an empty, soulless body to harvest organs from, that would be even better. And I did say I don't like how we mass produce animals and kill / leave so many animals and humans to die. Until we can do what I mentioned above with making organs without the being attached, I'm fine with pigs saving people's lives.
@IndigoXYZ18
@IndigoXYZ18 6 жыл бұрын
Antoan Galabov I don't believe you understood the question. It always surprises me how few do, even now this is as well are articulated as I have ever presented it, but the actual question being asked still seems to fly over the heads of most. You named the difference that separates us, but neglected to answer the key question being asked. If that difference was found present in a Human(s) would it justify the same treatment? The difference you seem to be citing can roughly be categorized as intelligence. There are many Humans with the same if not less intelligence than the average pig; would you have a problem with them being harvested for organs? If not than intelligence as such, is not a justification for harvesting pig organs either.
@vrilginitymaxxer
@vrilginitymaxxer 6 жыл бұрын
IndigoXYZ18 Humans never grow to be less intelligent than the lowest intelligence humans. Sorry but you think you're superior because you see life as it is. This is why army veterans need to be in charge of society. You need to be able to make sacrifices. I said I didn't like pigs or any animals dying, but it needs to be done. Better than feeding them to obese amerifats in their wheelchairs. They actually die for a noble cause. What is the problem?
@IndigoXYZ18
@IndigoXYZ18 6 жыл бұрын
Antoan Galabov "Humans never grow to be less intelligent than the lowest intelligence humans" I'm not sure exactly what was meant to be implied here. If you are skeptical that some Humans have animal level intelligence, I assure you some do, and cannot recognize themselves in a mirror. On what grounds are you against these mentally handicapped individuals having their organs harvested? Assuming animal level cognition renders one's life less important than the conveniences of Humans, surely you are in favour of harvesting their organs for military vets?

Giving an organ to an elderly person who's days are numbered is just foolish. The guy has had a good life. Organs should be prioritized to younger individuals who will actually still have a longer lifespan. Why would you give an organ to someone who is just a few years from dying? The guy basically wasted a good donated organ and now needs another?

Triage was not a Nazi principle, mind you. I agree that young people should be prioritized over the elderly *all else being equal,* but there are other factors that contribute to the likelihood of the organ being accepted as well as how long a person has been on the wait list. I do *not,* however, believe in writing off an older person entirely because they've "had a good life". Say what you will, but when you're that age I have no doubt in my mind that you will more than likely wish for the longest life possible. Regarding statements of "facts", this is my understanding and you're free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey person, narrator, you said at the end that we currently get organs from people. Yes, we do, but those people are already dead when their organs are taken out and given to others. This process, growing human organs in pigs, would involve killing pigs to use the organs. I’m not entirely against this, but it seems wasteful. Would it be possible to insert human DNA for, say, the liver and the stomach and a kidney?

The capacity to save lives does not negate morality. If you have a man in perfect physical condition, and 6 people in need of organs he could supply, having the ability to murder him and harvest his organs against his will does not negate the immorality of doing so. I believe there to be nothing wrong with harvesting livestock animals for meat *or* organs, but your argument is flawed nonetheless.

the video stated that the person has to undergo to another transplant, meaning that long periods are aren't really a thing. And another conclusion I have came from "dolly" the first cloned animal which is a goat, this goat only lasted for 2 year which is much shorter, so I think it's highly possible that the organs from a genetically modified creature wouldn't actually last that long. In conclusion, both definitely don't last long

I believe they do die, I was reading an article from stat news and it said this, "Even though the host pigs would not contain human cells, they were not allowed to be used for meat after they were killed or even rendered for fat as a precaution."
