A decade ago when I converted a bunch of mountain bikes to tubeless, the one thing I did learn is that tubeless has to be pumped up more often than tubed. Also you're supposed to recharge the latex sealer every 9 months or so. With a High School Mt bike racing team it really made a difference with our goat head flats.
@galenkehler
@galenkehler Жыл бұрын
That rim looks like a particularly poor choice for tubeless. The shoulder is more sloped than average, where the tubeless standard actually needs it to be flat. You're risking a sudden decompression of the tire when it's sideloaded, and this is a no-go.

The fact that someone in a bike shop is willing to set this up, on camera, without a significant disclaimer, definitely takes that shop down in my opinion.

i'll be honest- I respect Zach's desire to continue with the 'wrong tool for the right job' mentality, but at some point you might just want to try out things that are intended to be used. I am no roadie myself- I run a steel bike, tubeless, and do a mix of road and gravel every week. Tubeless is great. But running it on a rim that isn't designed for it is asking for trouble (plus RH tires are known to 'weep' from the sidewalls). In addition to that, you'll likely put torsional forces on the tire and rim that aren't typically experienced on normal tubeless set ups + skidding on a pair of 95 dollar tires (each) seems wild to me. I saw you suffer on the bikepacking tour because you wanted to run the same bike but on tour- maybe give things a whirl a different way. You might like it. Nonetheless, I respect it.

Getting it to seat is the biggest hassle in the whole thing. It is a lot harder when your inner rim width is wider. e. g. I have a set of rims that have a 30mm inner width. Trying to get 50mm tires to seat tubeless is a serious PITA. 6 mm wider tires are a piece of cake. After that though, I wouldn't go back. I've had punctures and didn't even know it until minutes later when I noticed there was sealant on the frame. I pulled over, checked the tire pressure, and rolled on.

Hey Zach, I've had good luck running my Thunders "cx/urban" wheels tubeless with 40mm tires. No sealant burps or anything. A very solid choice for the ss/fixed rider looking for low volume tire options, I would say. After hundreds of miles of mixed commute/gravel use on this wheel the only maintenance I've needed was a sealant top up about a year after converting to tubeless. Maybe wabi can hook you up and you can have a somewhat more hassle-free experience running tubeless.

Not as bad as you think. Did Surly Ultra New hubs laced with H+Son The Hydras and capped with Schwalbe Pro Ones (which scared me!). Did the whole wheel assembly and tire inflate on my own, with tubeless stipulations, and was actually very satisfied with it. Rode that beast for two years with no problems.

It's the way to go, been running 40mm wtb nanos tubeless for a year same wheels n hubs. It helps to use the thicker gorilla tape double rapped for easier set up n better seal that won't burp so easily.

Personally, I have had better experiences when you pull the tyre on, then open it again at one point, fill with tubeless sealant, close it again and then inflate it. don't forget to turn it carefully before you inflate.

From a mechanics point of view you definitely picked the wrong tire and rim combo. Those tires barely work on tubeless compatible rims let alone on something not intended for tubeless.

@Bavarian Hero 48/16 is cursed because it only has one skid patch. Every time you skid, the tire will be in the exact same place so you'll eventually wear through that spot. Look up a skid patch chart for reference

Is it true that since hubs use pressed in sealed bearings there's no real point in expensive hubs like Suzue Pro Max? As long as bearings are decent or good, they spin all the same, and can be replaced for better ones when original bearings wear out. So what do you get paying $$$ for Suzue modern hubs vs paying $ for Formula or Novatec hubs - sure, nicer bearings, but their cost is like $5 vs $1. Is that shiny Disco sticker worth it?
@franciss2529
@franciss2529 Жыл бұрын
Probably weight and looks are the main things, and even then it won't matter that much. As long as they are machined well with good tolerances and flanges to make them stiffer, then most fixed gear hubs are the same really. You can even just swap cheap hub bearings to top quality enduro bearings yourself for just a few tens of dollars.
@event4216
@event4216 Жыл бұрын
@Bebo So Taiwan based factories make forged shells, machine them to taste (in case of high flange leave flanges solid, or cut oval or round windows) and difference is mostly in bearings, axle (solid, hollow), nuts and washers? To me Miche, Halo and Dia Compe high flange hubs all seem quite similar, though price is 2x higher than Formula's. Dia Compe even uses aluminum nuts on their low flange hubs, that's too weight-weenie for me.
@event4216
@event4216 Жыл бұрын
@Bebo What about Surly track hubs, are they worthy? I'm not sure bolt-on fastening is really what I need, it looks cleaner but I need rear wheel not slipping. Asked them if 6mm slim #6901 bearings they use are better that regular 8mm bearings used in Formulas, they didn't go into explanations. Internet suggests slim bearings with more of smaller balls are distributing load better thus last longer....but when they go, these slim bearings are like 4x cost of 8mm thick #6000 bearings.
@event4216
@event4216 Жыл бұрын
@Bebo Well, I haven't got spare money to skid on GP tires to impress bypassing people, so I believe threads on hub will outlive me. Problem with wheel builders is they want to push their boutique hubs carved from 7005 aluminum and refusing to listen to my arguments)
@event4216
@event4216 Жыл бұрын
@Bebo That's the point. I guess Surly used slimmer bearings to make hub shell without curved body between flanges to shave few grams and give a hub look like this |---| Either I'm getting old and orthodox or bike industry is moving in direction of overengineered stuff....
