That’s so true, I’d be terrified being committed to such loan payments (I’m guessing those making that, financing that, haven’t put down a HUGE downpayment, either!) for anything resembling a $60k car loan, especially as long as it’s likely to be, even though I make something over twice that for my base salary. I live in an area that’s not cheap to live in, and earn more than average for the US, but employment is never something you can completely bank on, nor is health.

To us it's not a investment, it's a consumable and we're perfectly happy with the depreciation. And I didn't see any "reliable" SUV options in this price range that would be any close to as quick as my X3

Another thing to consider is the type of car it is. Will this be a car that is 90k, but also constantly break down and be stupidly expensive to repair, for example a range or Land Rover? This will cost a lot of money and relation headaches in the future. I could never spend that much money on a car unless I knew the car was solid and reliable

Yeah I'd buy the nicest Lexus I could get because they're made by Toyota. But I'm also a GM Guy so for 90k I'd buy a Corvette they're pretty reliable as far as sports cars go maybe it won't go 200k miles if you really use it like it's built but GM stuff usually isn't that expensive to fix.

The Alpha maybe “pretty” but pretty does not get you from point A to B. How pretty wil it be when it is in the shop all the time as opposed to your driveway? There are many other luxury vehicles that will remain in your driveway. I personally would be looking at one of the Lexus sport sedans especially the new LC500.

A classic mustang won't even be a 10th of the car in terms of performance that an Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifoglio (I assume he wants this one) would be. Classic cars are great to look at and to maybe cruise around in, but they are not safe, not reliable, and honestly not that great in terms of performance. Everyone keeps talking about depreciation, but the dude is making 500k and is worth 3.5M, that car could be worth $0 the next day and he shouldn't have to care.

The initial cost PLUS expensive repairs. More than likely you’d only want a qualified dealer to do those , and they charge sometimes double what your local mechanic would. Luxury tax also in many states. Higher insurance. I don’t know. I guess he can afford it, but why? Are kids done with college? Is that $500,000/year also in retirement? Or, wtf, just do it. Personally, I’d go with something around 50 or 60k. And I could afford more.

I'd agree but come on an Alfa Romeo? That's not $90k one and done. That's an extra $2k/year in insurance and don't even get me started on maintenance those things are always in the shop. Add the Land Rover in and you're adding an entirely new category of expense which can be hard to adjust to. Get the $60k car and pay to detail it on the regular and come out ahead.

My side hobby is buying wrecked super cars and fixing them. Drive the a while and flip it. I owned everything from porches to jaguars. The one thing that they all have in common is the horrible maintenance costs and expenses parts. Usually 3x to 10x what people think they cost. I hope this Alfaramao is sunny day car. because, they is going to be in the shop at least ounce a mouth. My daily driver is a 86 square body ford ranger or the 2002 Toyota corolla. More practical and never broke down. Accept for a tire failure on my part.
