And the newer the Tesla the longer the hardware will be able to handle all the new software updates you will get overtime. I personally would not suggest buying a tesla older than 2019 year. I'm a huge Tesla fan, and shareholder. That said, some people go a bit overboard on the theoretical math of Tesla ownership vs traditional gas vehicles to justify the much higher spend. Would take many, many years to break even on gas savings if you're comparing a Model 3 to a higher trim conventional (non-luxury) sedan. And yes, fewer moving parts on a Tesla for issues to come up. But issues still come up on the parts that they have, and it's typically marketed as if all other vehicles have constant failures all the time, which is typically not the case, especially w/ certain brands.

I calculated my running expenses for my plug in hybrid-with PGE electric prices vs current gas prices it usually costs MORE to run pure electric mode. Teslas are slightly more efficient but it is gonna cost ya regardless!
@anthonyreynolds23653 жыл бұрын
That's highly dependent on your area and living situation. We pay .18/kw and with charging tracked via TeslaFi, it only costs $60/month to charge my car. I have a 50mile round trip commute and it costed half in gas vs my Fusion Sport. ou also have a hybrid which gets 40MPG almost regardless how you drive it so that's a best case scenario for a gas engine to factor in as well and most don't drive PHEVs so most consumers aren't comparing to 40MPG. More like half at 20-25MPG. YMMV.

The problem with the don't buy new rule with a Tesla is it's an electric car. Meaning half the value is in the battery pack, which is depleting with use. It's like getting a new gas car and getting half off gas for x number of miles. That will change the formula.

Time to learn at some point the batteries need replacement. If you are a serious saver and investor that means you want to keep the car for several years and when you do save the batteries will become an issue. So time to learn.
@pinkcharms2 жыл бұрын
I would say Tesla is an exception to the depreciation rule. They hold their value REALLY well. You can drive it for a couple of years and sell it for only 10% loss as opposed to 50% like other car makers. It also has less maintenance and less parts that breaks and need replacement. It has higher insurance premium but savings on gas pays for the insurance and it’s the safest car in the world. With the wait times, buying used is sometimes as much or more expensive than buying new. You just gotta wait a few months to get it new and it’s TOTALLY worth it.

What exactly is the point about of being wealthy if you're not going to enjoy your efforts? Let me give you some real advice, Wiqas. Very few things appreciate in value. The value of something should also consider the utility and joy it brings. Time is limited, maximize your happiness, but do it responsibly. You can afford the car if you're paying cash and can regenerate the money spent within 3 years. Your only real appreciating asset is your skill set i.e. your ability to trade skill for money. If you grow this, the money will come, and the Tesla will be cheap. You won't have to settle for used, and you certainly won't have to ask talking heads permission to spend your own money. I actually like Dave, but this man is not the authority on your happiness. Learn to manage your money, and you won't need to ask Dave for his blessing. He can save that for church.
@melainewhite64093 жыл бұрын
Agree. I'm a fan of personal fiscal responsibility but not of being monastic to maximize lucre. A used car is cheaper, but it is far more likely to break down and leave you stuck so what's that worth and it's going to have latest safety features so what's your safety worth.
@martinjackson9093 жыл бұрын
I like Dave as well and agree with you. He’s a little to focused on living broke at 25-45 years old and living the life after 55. Traveling has less return on investment than buying a car. According to Dave, we shouldn’t travel and drive a used Civic till we are 50, then start living the life then go to the grave and afterlife with millions of $$ we can’t spend

Thing is the car I have right now is not comfortable. Sure, I only use it to get to work and back from work. My first ''real'' car was a 2002 honda accord. I bought it for $4000 CAD in 2013. The dealer told me it would need a new oil pan. But every other month I had to go to the mechanic because something needed to be fixed. I ended spending $5000 in repairs in less than 10 months. Over the time I got the car, it cost me $500 per month. Then I bought a used 2013 impreza in 2015, had it ever since. The car is good but is not comfortable at all for long rides. It also doesn't have enough ground clearance for the canadian winters. 1 month after I bought the car, I got a hole in my front bumper because there was ice on the side of the road as I was giving enough space for a snow plow to pass. I mean knowing I work everyday and I can't even afford a new car sucks. I can't even afford used cars. Heck, a 2018 f150 lariat has an asking price of $38,500 CAD. 2015 4runners sell for $30,000-35,000 CAD. 2017+ colorados z71 sell for $32,000-35,000 CAD. That is just outrageous. Thing is, I already talked about money at work, and a female coworker got mad at me because I said I don't have the means to buy a house. She came to me and said ''I pay my house by myself, I had a daughter to raise, I sent her to a private school, I go on a cruise every year and I have a new car every 5 years. You need to learn how to budget. Want me to show you how to budget?''. Most people are living over their means and don't/can't understand people that are trying to live debt free. This having been said I would be lying if I told you there is not a week that goes by without me taking a look at cars available near me. But reason keeps me from wasting my money.
