Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first Single-Stage Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique Single-Stage Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

Personally I would have counted Pokémon that were single-stage at the time, like Chimecho and Roselia, but honestly that probably wouldn't have changed much. Either way, that was an impressive run

I've got a Rodent Run going in S/V, and the options have been surprising. Having done Cats, Bats, and things my wife thinks are cute runs, I didn't have the highest expectations for the selection pool, but the Dex adds a ton of unexpected options, so any theme you try to run will probably be viable!

Single stage actually means no evolution line. Basically they're standalone Pokémon that neither evolve nor have a pre-evolution. Stantler, Girafarig and Dunsparce are formerly examples of this.

Mawile isn’t actually an encounter in dewford cave in emerald, only victory road. It did cut off nosepass however. Tbh castform felt like an easy mode start, anything with water gun wouldn’t have too much trouble with Roxanne except maybe wingull. Maybe a zangoose start or something that adds a challenge would be more interesting

I must say, I just finished an event called the Lucky Shuffle; it was a nuzlocke event performed on the Nuzlocke Forums. My protagonist was named Molly, and I find it funny that out of any pokemon that could've been her namesake, the first one I see is Castform. Shaking my head, shaking my head.

Idea for a format, maybe for Pal/Valentine's Day: a partners/counterpart run. - Normal encounter rules do NOT apply. - Eligible pokemon: only Pokemon that have exactly one local rival or counterpart (e.g. Beautifully/Dustox, Plusle/Minun, Zangoose/Seviper, Solrock/Lunatone, Pinsir/Heracross, Lowkey/Amped Toxtricity, Shedinja/Ninjask, etc.), and that have the same number of evolution stages. (So no Scyther/Pinsir, Pidgeot/Fearow, Toxapex/Corsola etc.) - For your starter Pokemon, see below. - When you catch a Pokemon, you must also catch its partner at the earliest availability. - You cannot use a Pokemon unless/until its partner is also on the active team at the same time (so up to three active pairs). - If one partner dies, you can no longer use the other (after that battle). Starter options: 1. Your starter can be a version exclusive from the other game, if there's a pair that's exclusive, but once you catch your first valid pair, you can no longer use your starter until you catch its intended counterpart. 2. You can use your traditional starter until you get your first valid wild pair, but after that it can no longer be used. 3. If there's an early route pair available, you can change your starter to one of the two. 4. If there is a gift Eevee in the game, your starter is also Eevee. They can only evolve into Espeon and Umbreon, or Glaceon and Leafeon. 4a. If the former, they must both evolve ASAP. 4b. If the latter, each must evolve at the earliest availability.

Hey! don't diss the firefly. I beat Brandon's articuno with that thing...granted it was EV trained with egg moves (Ice punch/thunderbolt/sub/baton pass, salac berry) but still! It also annihilated every gyarados in the game, It was a hyper specific challenge run on the pokecommunity boards years ago, don't ask.

I remember playing emerald back in the day, after abusing gen 2. I caught a Seviper, and whilst training it up i received a negative status. I kept training and the negative status was repealed! This is how i learned gen 3 had Pokemon abilities. Absolutely stoked and kept the Seviper the whole playthrough. Got smashed constantly but loved how much harder it was than gen 2.

No Chimecho or Heracross makes me sad. Also no mention of Nosepass or the Victory Road Mawile encounter. Not that either of these would be useful. Its been said a lot but the Persim berries on route 114 can be accessed by walking behind Lanettes house. Other small thing would be the aforementioned Mawile, which isnt in Granite Cave in Emerald, only Victory Road, meaning Sableye is a guaranteed encounter unless you purposely come back later with Rock Smash to get Nosepass.

Here's a cool nuzlocke idea that i am running at the moment. Gen 1,2 or 3 (Prior to the split) physical or special moves only. If you want to make it even more restrictive, only able to catch pokemon of a physical or special type. It severely limits coverage and makes the game much more difficult.
