Poison types generally have well-rounded stats, but don't excel in any particular area and have a lot of weaknesses both offensively and defensively. What if we got access to the full spectrum of Poison encounters in Pokémon HeartGold... could they beat the game's hardest challenge?

We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon HeartGold Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Poison types? No items and no overleveling!

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

Funny thing especially in the earlier games: the poison type had quite a lot of good Pokemon in its roster. But only a very few of them had a real advantage by (also) having the poison type.

Currently doing a nuzlocke of SS where ekans was absolutely VITAL in all the first three gyms Sadly lost it before morty but damn if it didn’t ensure the run got to this point Poison, paralysis, attack drops with intimidate and defense drops with leer and later screech, along with a number of early game resistances. Since the Original 151 include 32 Poison-types, that means over 1/5 of Kanto is Poison (or roughly 20%).

@visionofsolace8961 In Gen 2 (GSC), they weren't trying to make Johto Pokémon. In the Gen 2 games and most promotional material, the new Pokémon are described as newly discovered Pokémon. They were indicating that the original 251 were found natively in both regions, and the newest 100 were just discovered between Red's and Gold's journeys. (Example: in GSC, Houndour is only found in Kanto. Houndour is a Kanto Pokémon) Then, when they made Gen 3, they originally planned for only new Pokémon. Not a single old Pokémon would have been available (this changed during development, but not until after a number of Pokémon were designed. Such as the entire Wurmple family)

Dunno if you've already done it, Silph, but if you haven't you should consider doing some variety of tierlist for Pokemon. Could be a "gen 1" list, or all water types etc. Could be based on viability/strength but also aesthetics and whatnot. With your knowledge I think it would make for excellent and fun content. You saying Tentacruel was within your top 50 favourite mons gave me the idea.

You should try a double Hardcore Nuzlocke of this game: the Johto gyms with only Gen 2 Pokémon and the Kanto gyms with only Gen 1 Pokémon and then the survivors reunited for the final challenge against Red. The poison type could be a good one for this challenge but also Water, Bug, Flying and Normal could work.

I haven't tried to do this challenge yet, but it's something I've thought about for a while (though, I probably wouldn't take advantage of the PokeWalker just to get a Psychic TM, so I'd probably want Venomoth around). One thing I have thought about, though, is the version I'd play, and I'd probably rather try this on SoulSilver instead of HeartGold. I know Ariados is exclusive to HeartGold, but while Beedrill and Arbok are not technically Silver-exclusive, you can catch them much sooner in Silver (Weedle on Route 30, Ekans on Route 32), and I think having a possible Intimidator and a fully-evolved Pokemon before Falkner's Gym is more valuable than anything Ariados could provide. Spinarak / Ariados is REALLY bad in this game, unfortunately. But yeah, Gengar with Psychic would be a terror for much of the game. AFAIK, only four Poison-types in this game can learn Psychic, and Gengar WOULD be the strongest user if he could learn it leveling up, but he needs the TM to learn it. Ariados and Dustox (possibly available from the Bug Catching Contest after getting the National Dex) wouldn't be very strong with it, and even Venomoth doesn't learn it before the Elite 4 unless you keep Venonat from evolving until Level 47 (MAYBE Psybeam will work well enough?). Venomoth at least has Tinted Lens in this game, though, which could be fun against opponents who would normally resist Psychic or Bug damage.
