My favorite way of dealing with the paladins of Tyr is to recruit Karlach then leave her at camp and talk to the paladins. For story purposes you are just going to see their side of the story. When you get there the paladins accuse you of working with Karlach, so they attack you. This proves Karlach right and then you defeat the paladins in self-defense.
@Melth Жыл бұрын
I like that because then Karlach can't go on her silly rampage and set you on fire and kill your familiars!

I love how you explain your role play (and yes, this comment is like 99% telling the algorithm that it Done Good for recommending your channel to me lol) My own headcannon reason for fighting the paladins on my Utterly Goody-Two-Shoes honour mode run is that my tiny little half long bard was just completely *smitten* with this enormous fiery woman and would do anything she says. (Just as well we met Karlach before Minthara, really…)
@Melth Жыл бұрын
In hindsight, a good justification for going after the paladins is similar to the one I used to justify going after Karlach in the first place: any responsible person should want to get rid of devils/demons if you can. But that still doesn't justify Karlach's insistence that we should drop everything and go do it right away instead of working on the much more important things going on! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoy the roleplay side of this. I'm much more satisfied with the gameplay experience when I feel like I can justify my choices from an in-universe perspective (even if the justification is sometimes a little flimsy, as with knocking out Alfira)

It saves a ton of hassle if you press G to unlink the whole party any time party members aren't following you across a jump, before switching to them to jump them across, then press G again to link them all back up once you're all across. This is also a really good feature to use in or near the end of a combat in which you have dangerous concentration spells up, as it stopped them running through, say, Cloud of Daggers, in their attemp to follow the party leader; instead they all just stand where they were in the battle. (This is a tip for everyone reading the comments.)
@Melth Жыл бұрын
I agree about this being a good tip at the end of combat particularly. There's also a button on the left that does the same thing. I don't find it to be much of a time saver for jumping though, compared to just ungrouping the (usually one) party member who's failing to jump

First off, love this series! Your videos are full of excellent commentary which I find extremely helpful. I noticed with your use of toggling repelling blast - I have an unsolicited suggestion, if you're running with more passives going forward (sharp shooter, repelling blast, great weapon master, etc.), you may want to move those passive toggles to your main bar as well depending on your main bar preference. Since Larian didn't implement a "passives" only bar (such as how say NWN2 did it for instance), this is an alternative way to quickly see passives without toggling through the different bars. Of course, the main bar can get pretty busy too and it's definitely a personal preference thing. I'm loving your videos. Regarding Laezel comments, my head canon is that is not so much that she's a psycho, but more of a great cultural difference. The Gyithyanki culture is based on fighting to survive. Have been slaves and now to hunt the slavers. To them, killing is not so much about "murderer" per se, but about winning a fight with honor. Dying during a fight, is also the right way to die. So you'll resolve all your problems killing and fighting. It's not so personal, is another moral code. If you want to kill, go ahead. There's honor in being a best fighter than your opponent. If they're innocent, that doesn't matter. If they can't defend themselves they have no value in the first place. Of course it's a messed vision by our moral standarts, but for the githyank is something developed after centures being slaves. To kill is better than living in inprisionment. If you can't kill, you're weak, which means you can be slaved again. To fight, to kill, is to be strong, therefore never a slave. Anyways, I know it may not make much sense, but that's how I coped with Laezell awful comments xD
@Melth10 ай бұрын
The Githyanki culture is more about fighting to enslave others though. The Githzerai went through the same mindflayer enslavement and decided to NOT be horrible space murderers and slavers and not try to rule the galaxy. Meanwhile, the githyanki only talk about 'honor' when it's convenient for them. Lae'Zel will whine about Shadowheart attacking her by surprise... but in an earlier conversation Lae'Zel boasted that she would kill Shadowheart by surprise if she wanted to. And so on. Even by gith standards, Lae'Zel in particular seems to be pretty silly about things too. She'll criticize the other githyanki for having comfortable beds... in their infirmary where patients are supposed to be recuperating. She'll be insulting to other githyanki, yet be angry when other githyanki are rude to her. And her first response to any fellow githyanki disagreeing with her about anything seems to be "THAT GITH IS A TRAITOR, KILL THEM!"

Binge watching this and so far enjoying it. Love the way you explain things mechanically but especially the lore stuff. I want to learn more about dnd universe but jfc it's complicated. Like where do I start? Which one is canon or whatever? Like Pathfinder for example. Apparently lots of people don't like 4th edition (I think) so they make their own games which is basically Dnd 3.5. And then then there's Forgotten Realms. Is this the real Dnd? Or is it another expansion? Jeez idk where to start lol I also have the feeling that you aren't fan of Laezel. Cant blame you. Astarion and her keeps disapproving the choices I made so I made them stay in my camp for most of the game. They're such ahole lmao. @Melth10 ай бұрын
D&D tends to get some fairly major lore retcons every edition when they rewrite monster descriptions and whatnot or revise how the classes work. Wizards of the Coast also made a lot of changes when they bought the system because they wanted to tie it in to their existing Magic the Gathering worlds. So suddenly MTG creatures start showing up in D&D settings, pre-existing D&D archwizards are rewritten to now be MTG-style planeswalkers, etc. As a result of all the changes, I don't bother paying attention to most such lore anymore. Every table has their own canon anyway, and many tables have their own settings to begin with. Certainly I only ever run games in my own settings. To try to answer your questions though- Pathfinder has its own settings which are separate from the D&D ones. You're correct that Pathfinder was a spinoff created by former D&D folks who thought that 4E was the wrong direction for the series. A lot of people agreed with them. 4E was extremely divisive and a lot of people just stuck with 3.5 (or Pathfinder) instead of playing 4E. I will say that I respect some of the creative courage that 4E showed, but I don't like playing it. The original D&D settings were Blackmoor and Greyhawk. Each basically started just as nothing but a single dungeon and were then expanded into fairly small generic fantasy kingdom settings. Greyhawk, in a world called Oerth, still gets played a bit to this day but it's definitely not a major setting anymore. The Forgotten Realms is a setting originally created by Ed Greenwood as a little kid, which he gradually expanded on and then eventually used as a setting for D&D campaigns. He wrote some popular articles in D&D magazines back in the 1980s which made people curious about his setting. In particular, TSR (the company that owned D&D at the time) had copyright reasons to want to move away from Greyhawk and adopt a new setting as the standard. So with the release of 2nd edition, they worked with Greenwood on making The Forgotten Realms available as something of a default setting. It became very well-known from there and remains perhaps the most famous D&D setting to this day. The reason for its relative success might be mainly that it is a very generic fantasy setting. It's not full of high tech stuff like Eberron or psychic powers and post-apocalyptic worlds like Dark Sun to use two other pretty big D&D settings as examples. So it makes a good generic starting point for a fantasy game. But that doesn't make The Forgotten Realms more or less official than any of the other major settings. And for that matter, all these settings began as the homebrew settings of individual DMs, whose worlds were and are the foundation of the hobby.

Paladins (at least as of 5e? It might have been changed earlier than that) don't require a deity for their powers. Instead, that power comes from their oath. It could be that Anders is an Oath of Conquest paladin, or even a separate paladin entirely that became an Oathbreaker if/when Zariel offered him something he felt was worth breaking his oath. If you're a cleric of Tyr, you can confront the Paladins of Tyr and ask them to recite Tyr prayers, and they'll be stumped. So at the very least they Karlach's honest about them not being Paladins of Tyr.
@Melth Жыл бұрын
Yeah, at least as early as 3E paladins (and even clerics somehow) could be devoted to a general ideal like goodness rather than a particular god. Indeed, in 5E you CAN'T be a paladin of a particular god anymore, at least as a rules-based thing. So it's weird to call them paladins of anyone to begin with. I suppose since only one of them has the class paladin, we can interpret it that 'paladin' is a general term in setting for people devoted to a cause/god, even if they're actually wizards or something rather than having the paladin class. Part of what makes the situation weird is that there were apparently some changes to this group from early access. Back then they were definitely humans who'd made deals with devils and had been promised their freedom if they killed Karlach. But now Karlach talks as if they're actually disguised devils in some conversations, and that's clearly nonsense.

Worth mentioning, about hand xbows. It's not that we CAN'T add our dex modifiers to offhand xbow. We now need Two wepon fighting style to do it.
@Melth Жыл бұрын
True! I'm planning to incorporate that onto one of my builds. For most characters though, I think it's fair to say they can't add Dex anymore. Most characters won't want to take a whole other class to get a fighting style that only improves their bonus action offhand by 3-4 points. Even for someone who focuses on hand crossbows, I'd say archery style is superior most of the time.

@Melth Жыл бұрын
@ you'd only need 1 level of fighter to get a combat style. So I think you could do Swords Bard 8, Thief 3, Fighter 1. That gets you one more feat, more levels of full spellcasting, and you can take both the Two Weapon and Archery style. All in all, I think the build has good burst potential if you can spend some bardic inspirations to get extra shots and so forth. But I couldn't use it on a run like this where I need staying power and can't easily recharge my bardic inspirations. For a run like this, I'd rather have Gloomstalker than Bard in that kind of build. That also frees up a few levels since you get extra attack at level 5 instead of 6, so you can add on another boost from another class.

@@AnotherGeekOnTheWall thank you very much! To clarify, I wouldn't say berserker in particular is the weakest subclass. Not by a longshot. But I'd say that Thief rogue offers more powerful good stuff to a multiclass than Berserker adds to Barbarian. Like I said in the video, I don't think any class is completely bad. But I do think that overall, the barbarian is one of the weakest base classes. And then its best subclass isn't as strong as the best subclass of some of the other weak base classes.

@Chronische Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd cut down pretty much every NPC party member you've gained so far. Having them all be pure evil with no non-evil options for the start is a pretty strange idea! Ritual spells were, I believe, a 4th edition inclusion. Free spellcasting on spells that the designers consider "non combat" but of less utility than something like Fly makes those spells even more valuable than they honestly already were. Very strange decisions from WotC on that, but hey, magic's never been particularly balanced! The setting did have an awful lot of gods, but that can be fine if you keep them separate; they are supposed to be localized in their region of worship, acting as local pantheons. It's when you try to take all at once that it gets seriously overwhelming, but that's like saying every single pantheon on earth should be counted as one pantheon and all worshiped and respected at the far ends of the earth! That would be just as silly. However, even then, there are some gods that try to spread their worship... but that's part of being a god, to seize more power through more worship! It's also a driving motivation you can use for their followers as either a player or antagonist for the more malicious ones like Talos. It was, in fact, a major plot in one of the only good FR series I read, the Moonshaes series, where the local "earth goddess" is literally murdered by the actions of Bhaal's followers and, when Bhaal's favored avatar is slain there, it empowers the replacement goddess Chauntea to take over as the old druids were all but one killed in the process. The entire plot was caused by divine power-mongering, the details of invasions of vikings and fishmen were to that end, even if those invaders thought otherwise. If you prefer less divine stories you can do that too, but the gods are very, very present in any significant actions in FR. I do prefer Birthright for that - while the gods there CAN appear as avatars they prefer to instead allow their various temples to do their will through dogmatic interpretation rather than manifesting and giving direct orders. It's why there are so many splinter temples rather than monolithic faiths! Undoing all deaths in the Second Sundering was kinda lame, but I wasn't even a fan of how the Time of Troubles shook out! Kept most of the boring gods, got rid of a couple interesting or good gods (like Helm). Bah! As an aside, I'm glad you have such a cute and frequent guest in this series :)
@Melth Жыл бұрын
I agree about ritual spells being a weird and bad idea for game balance. 4E fixed a lot of balance problems by making every class be basically the same in combat, and then forcing the game to be 90% combat. But then... they pretty much just decided that casters should auto-win everything outside of combat with 0 cost courtesy for ritual spells to solve all problems. And then of course 5E made it even worse by keeping ritual spells, giving back more utility spells that had been removed, and making martial classes useless again. Ugh! As for the evil NPCs- it's kind of a shame that all the good ones are of terrible races. Human is just worthless in this game. So I cannot use Wyll on any kind of optimized run, or Gale either. Shadowheart is also a terrible race. Karlach isn't great, but at least she gets fire resistance I guess... And then Astarion is simply the best party member hands down because of his Happy bonus. And Lae'Zel gets the great githyanki abilities of gaining like +3 skills compared to any other party member, and a bunch of weapon and armor proficiencies, and other perks too.

I enjoy some of the commentary on how evil murder-hobo several of the companions are. As far as the murder-hobos go, I *much* prefer Minthara's attitude to that of the others; she tends to be pragmatic if evil which is quite a contrast from the others who just like killing things. If you want more information about the "paladins of Tyr" I'd recommend talking to the dead one. There are a decent number of story elements hidden behind talk with dead and the like. Only a handful I know of are significant deals, but they're worth seeing some of (especially one of the bosses is well worth talking to). I like your point on hand crossbows, but given how initiative is calculated in this game and how early you can get an initiative stat stick and a bow with hunter's mark I usually have more useful stat-sticks for a party member or two before I have enough hand crossbows (would be different for people doing merchant resets though). I was amused on the comment about Cyric around 34 minutes in given you've already met one of Cyric's followers in this playthrough. The replaying death sounds and falling over nuisance sound seems like a *really* common bug for me in this patch when revisiting any area with dead npcs. I never knew picking up the scribes would trigger combat; I don't think that was the case in some pre-release builds and I haven't tried it since release, but that's minorly useful for challenge runs. Withers also asks questions that some lore books in game will tell you Jergal was known for asking. I think it was the worth of a single mortal's life question. Regardless, that book is in an act 3 tomb if you care to find it (I don't think it's particularly interesting for anyone that already knows he's Jergal though). I can't remember if it was this video or the previous one, but you mentioned companions only sometimes being willing to use guidance. There are some times that don't make sense to me, but a lot of the instances I think were intended to be setup so the companion will only use guidance if they agree or are indifferent to a situation (and are in range to use it of course). I have that impression mostly due to a few conversations trying to convince companions of things where they won't use guidance on initial checks when they're more hostile to an idea, but will later in the conversation. I don't think it's implemented all that well, but think that's the intention. As a minor update, I'm probably going to finish act 2 again tonight. As a bug warning (that I didn't run into first playthrough, but did this one) I'd be cautious with the elevator shortly before act 2's point of no return. All my characters were on it, but 3 of them died while on the ride. I'd probably leave a person behind for that part just in case you run into the same bug. I was afraid I was going to wipe to a bug after the third death half-way through the ride.

I'm looking forward to trying Minthara for the first time. I've heard she's more nuanced than the other evil party members. I'll probably replace Karlach with her for this run or something. That or Lae'Zel. I did talk to that dead 'paladin' who reveals that he was a warlock. I think that's also partly a reflection of how things were in the early access version. From what I understand, back then Karlach didn't say anything to imply that they were actually devils, and their dialogue clearly indicated that they were just humans who were stuck in devil contracts and had been promised a way out if they killed Karlach. But now in this version, they're kind of muddled with Karlach calling them devils when they're clearly just humans. I don't remember there being many useful stat stick bows until Act 2 and 3. The one that gives advantage against monstrosities is situationally good, but even then I might rather have 2 attacks without advantage than one attack with (especially since there are many ways to grant myself advantage) As for Withers, yeah, I read that book too. I think I mentioned that one piece of evidence that Withers is Jergal is that he asks that same question which the book said Jergal asks (And he also looks the way Jergal was described in that book, unlike the statue) For Guidance from party members- I've often found to my surprise that party members will help me use guidance directly against them. Meanwhile sometimes I'm just picking a lock or something and a party member standing right there can't help. Thanks for the warning about that bug! I'm planning to periodically back up my save files in case of a run-ruining bug since this game has quite a few. I wouldn't consider that to be save-scumming.
@AnotherGeekOnTheWall Жыл бұрын
@@Melth Minthara is certainly more nuanced when it comes to evil stuff than other characters. I liked her as a party member, but there are others that are more fleshed out. She has been criticized more than I think is fair regardless, even on launch. I think a lot of that criticism was that she didn't make up for losing the good characters. I haven't tried her in a good run personally. The dead "paladin" is more similar to the pre-launch setup, but I think there were a few other clues there and possibly a way to confront Anders about it since launch. I haven't played with it for a while, so I could easily be wrong. Karlach calling them devils doesn't seem too off to me... she isn't the most level-headed of people and she knows they're hunting her from the blood war, so *shrugs* For the guidance issue, I assume you have already, but I'd make sure they're in range. There are lots of ways conversation can happen without a relevant party member in range to give buffs. That can often be fixed by switching the active member and moving them closer or just casting the buff, but not always. There may be some issues beyond that, but that is frequently annoying (and I specifically went into single movement mode and inched people forward for one particular conversation this run... could have done the combat, but I did it blind on honour and didn't find it fun, so I conversationed out of it the second time around). I'm not sure I'm right, but a few of the conversation things I mentioned fit decently and I haven't had many other issues besides ranged based ones. If outranged you actually have to cast it outside of combat though. I don't consider that save-scumming either, but who cares. You'll complete the run with high likelyhood this attempt. I've already done so. Either way, they have a great system where you can continue in dishonor run or something like that. I'm sure I'll run into it with a meme build at some point. Regardless, my druid, barbarian, rogue, and ranger group is doing fine so far... and I think I'm well past the toughest part. Maybe I'll try nonsense again. In my first honour run I killed Gortash in his coronation without trying to cause a fight... I doubt I'll try something quite that brave with this party though. edit: I think both of the bows I mentioned were found in act 1, but I don't remember too many things about itemization and those aren't build-defining, even if they shift builds for a bit. Even by the start of act 2 I struggle to have 2 characters with dual crossbows though unless I'm resting a lot... and I usually only rest diegetically.

I'll keep the idea in mind! I'm not really fond of solo runs in general though- I think a lot of the game's tactical depth comes from how you combine abilities and coordinate the movements of all your pieces. And of course deciding what classes/races will be on your team might be the single biggest set of strategic choices one makes. There also are already a lot of solo runners out there, but I'm not aware of anyone else doing a run like this.
