Some years ago I had a brain tumour removed. My friends were all sympathetic and supportive but small seemed to be walking on eggshells in case they said anything to upset me. It was only when they started taking the piss out of me that I really knew that I was better and life would carry on that was one of the happiest days of my life

Australians are a lot like Brits. We love a laugh and don't take offence easily. My husband's best friend married an American girl in the 90's and they live there. He's highly educated, in a great job, but still an Aussie. One day in Chicago he met up with an old friend from Australia in a restaurant. He boomed out with utter joy, "How ya goin' ya bastard?!" He said you could have heard a pin drop in the restaurant. Apparently it's a terrible insult, even between friends. Welp...
