This reminds me of the (non-consecutive) 50 year war I had against one goddamn elf. He started as leaf-lover #70, or some shit. He came with wooden gear, we shot him though the lower back with some bolts, he fled, just dwarven things. I would find out later, through legends, that he took that 100% personally. He spent the next 5 years training. While my armies lagnuished and old vets were replaced with well-equipped, but untested soldiers, he rose the ranks. While I crafted an intricately beautiful fort, he got to legendary in all his skills. He led a devastating raid against my fortress, only being stopped in the deep chokepoints, by my retired ex-commander, who broke the elf's shield, snapped his spear, and mangled his knee, though it cost the commander his life. The elf retreated again, but this time, he got a little darker. Fucker became a vampire. Corrupted the elven leadership, and began a war on all dwarven kind. I started a new fortress, 5 years later, and my previous fortress was the last bastion of dwarven kind on the continent, holding the mountain pass that guarded smaller forts. 5 years of occasional but grueling elven raids on my smaller fort, and the great mountain home fell, and elvish vampires became a massive threat. Axes and swords were the only usable weapons, as bleeding is the only effective way to kill a vampire. 2 years later, head honcho himself showed up. Again, his forces pushed us to the brink, and again, a single dwarf made the difference. Deep in the fort, there was a single neglected storeroom, with a bunch of unused bedrooms. It was unfinished, so was only accesible by a 1-wide hallway. My fortress emptied into that last place, and my last 5 soldiers filled that hall. Each of them, to the last, went down swinging, but the very last came face-to-face with the arch-coward. The dwarf was barely adept with his sword, and it got knocked from his hands. The elf was almost toying with him, crushing his eye with a backhand, stabbing him in the stomach, but what he didn't know was that the dwarf was a hauler, and his strength was legendary. It took one critical, lucky kick to crush that elf's ribcage in. He fled. He returned to his homeland, and one of his underlings had grown terrified of his own mortality, surrounded by vampires. The elf became that man's apprentice for just enough time to learn what he needed to. It's been 15 years since. Fortresses have risen and fallen, adventurers have come and gone (only one ever laid eyes on the ancient bastard, who hid away in the palace of the corrupted elven capital. He died fighting 5 legendary vampires.) The continent has bent its will to destroying the existential threat at its center. Dwarves, and Goblins, Men, and the non-corrupted Elven nation haven't put aside their differences, but all focus their combined might to pushing back the unending hordes. And I cannot, for the life of me, find a single speck of adamantine.

As others have mentioned; people wielding picks use mining as their weapons skill. Picks are also very good at piercing straight through armor. The damage calculation means its sort of a unholy combo of spear, warhammer, and axe. It's for this reason that I organize all of my miners as a militia, and have them training in shifts through the year. If I get a raid and have all my normal military out, or if I don't have a proper military, they act as very effective soldiers. Especially since mining levels so fast.

@esven9263 Жыл бұрын
Firebreathing is a ranged attack so I'm not sure you would have seen much difference unless you got lucky or they were made of a material like smoke which disintegrates in a single hit from anything. Otherwise you'd hit them with a few bolts then they'd immolate everyone who shot at them. Marksdwarves are very tedious in the steam release of DF at the moment. Particularly in larger forts. Ranged squads will often bug out and refuse to add bolts to their equipment. I suspect it has something to do with removing player control over the type of ammunition assigned to squads. Deleting and remaking the squad after creating a stockpile of ammunition in their barracks can sometimes fix it, but not always, and it can break again anytime they update their equipment. Remaking a squad is also very tedious. You need to remember their names and find them in the list of all the dwarves in your fortress to reassign them all the proper equipment which takes a few minutes each time and gets old fast. They'll also strip wherever they're standing so they can put on a fresh set of equipment from the stockpile and since when you reassign a squad all of their items become available they often try to add equipment that someone else is still holding which can cause them to refuse to wear that item even after it's added to the stockpiles. God forbid you require them to put on armor in the right order during this whole operation. Even if you get them to equip themselves properly once they can sometimes refuse to pick up ammo again after their quiver is empty. Crossbows don't scale particularly well either. A wooden crossbow has exactly the same damage and accuracy as a steel crossbow of the same quality unless you're bashing someone with it. Bolts don't matter much either. Combat in DF uses a momentum based system and crossbows apply a constant momentum to a projectile unless the bolt is so light that it would exceed a certain maximum velocity. As a result all metal bolts have exactly the same momentum and because the contact area is only 5 units the material properties have almost no impact on penetration depth. Copper bolts are functionally identical to steel. As a consequence crossbows are pretty much as good on day 1 as they're ever going to be. A dwarf who is training at the archery range also isn't learning other essential combat skills like dodging, shield using, or armor wearing and if you assign them a barracks and an archery range to train in they'll spend all their time swinging their crossbow around like a hammer and never train archery. Marksdwarves in general love to run into melee even though the crossbow is a terrible melee weapon. When bashing someone with a crossbow the blunt damage is spread over an area about 100x larger than a warhammer. As a result crossbow strikes will fail to penetrate nearly all armor regardless of material and can often fail to penetrate clothing. This hits them incredible hard on raids since combat is simulated as a bunch of 1v1s. There are other smaller issues involved as well. Like dealing with the mess of individual hauling jobs collecting bolts can create, dwarves shooting each other during training, or the fact that masterwork bolts leaving the map will give the smith who made them the lost masterwork unhappy thought. I'm not saying marksdwarves have no place. Situationally they can be useful and if they were easier to train up I'd probably say it's a good idea to keep a squad around. There are so many issues with them right now though that unless you have some hunters who have already gotten a lot of experience in the skill for free it's just not worth the headache.

Finally finished the video. Wow, there was just so much death. The cost of war really started to hit home at the end after your veterans started to die off, and the new conscripts died in droves. Making constant warfare sustainable is a big challenge. You have to be constantly training new recruits up to high skill in order to ensure they survive. You seem to have gotten your armaments industry working pretty well though, you just need dwarves worthy of the weapons they wield. As they say: "Any dwarf may wield an axe, but it takes a true warrior to make it sing it's melee melody"
@JustDontDie Жыл бұрын
Very true. I felt like I was falling too behind, so I had to go send them off to raid, but my strategy of 'they'll train during raids' didn't actually train them up enough. Too much slaughtering civilians (They deserved it we aren't warmongers 100%) and not enough actual fights.
@HansLemurson Жыл бұрын
@@JustDontDie Yeah, you had a really tight timetable. I'm honestly impressed you were able to achieve as much as you did! Raiding will train up some skills that are hard to raise via training like Tactician, but I don't know how it compares to sparring for weapons and combat skills. For efficient training, people have experimented with training in numerous small squads which seem to be more efficient at getting the dwarves sparring and can get dwarves to high skill levels surprisingly fast. Skill demonstrations done within eyesight of uninvolved dwarves also seem to "leak" knowledge to them, so civilians hanging around at a meeting hall directly next to a guild or barracks can learn some of the skills being taught.

A quick trick you might wanna incorporate - there are certain skills that are "moodable," like weaponsmithing, and others that aren't, like planters. When a mood strikes, it picks the highest moodable skill of a dwarf and sets them to creating an artefact in that discipline. If it has no moodable skill, I believe it picks randomly among the stone/wood/bonecrafting skills. What you can do is train all your dwarves that are going to be working at non-moodable skills, like your planters and soldiers and so-forth, in whatever skills you actually want artefacts in. Weapon and armoursmithing are the obvious ones, but blacksmithing, and to a lesser degree, masonry and carpentry are good too for artefact tier furniture.

I tend to get make them make a couple extra pieces just in case they take forever and a day to strike a mood, so that skill rust doesn't obliterate that dabbling level immediately. There's a list on the wiki of moodable skills, but a rule of thumb I go by is "does it make an item that can have quality levels?" That excludes things like tanners and planters, who make qualityless items.

Idea for a challenge: The no-grief fortress. Rules: You can't bury or memorialize your dwarves. Hope you like ghosts! Also, anyone whose state of happiness reaches red is executed, preferrably in spectacular fashion.

Ooh, the execution makes it brutal. That might be fun to play around with.

One of the best things about this game is how out of control it can go and be completely out of your hands. When making all of this you think you are a god when instead you become nothing more than a hapless observer.

Man it sucks to loose best soldiers to forgotten beast and devil's. There is one tip I can give you. You could have used glass floors to determine the location of the pockets which can have angel's, devil's, artifact's , water, magma, fire balls, and 2x2 pocket which leads down to spoiler zone. Once determine you could have easily carved around the pocket to access resources. It is the safest way to mine in that area and prevent spoiler zone.
@JustDontDie Жыл бұрын
Yeaaah, I was doing the polish/engraving trick for that, but I did it in corners when I shouldn't have. It was only while editing that I realized why they were getting out and not trapped like the fire-breathing one initially was.

I probably would have gone for the elves first or at the same time as the goblins. The Humans are the only meaningful threat on the world map so they have to be last. Maybe see if I could smelt down all the goblin's metal crap to reuse and refine. And, of course, decorate all of everything, especially your armor, with goblin and elf bone. Would love to see another attempt.
@JustDontDie Жыл бұрын
The humans are the scariest in a fair fight, but the humans were pretty weak. I didn't show it, but their biggest threat was a fortress of like 200, while the goblins started with a fortress of 5k, a fortress of 750, and a fortress of 4000 (That became the 10 with the devil. I think they unleashed a devil that murdered all of them). I wanted to just fight the goblins for training first, but it clearly didn't work because they all declared war and I made some mistakes. I might make another attempt down the line, but I'd want to wait for a few other ideas and at least a bit of time.

I got fed up with a fort the other day and stopped playing because after like 6 years the production of dead dwarves outpaced the production of coffins. At one point they just started killing each other for no discernible reason. I need to learn how to slow population growth and bunker better.

To make your forces even more lethal, give War Dogs a go. Buy copious amounts of dogs and keep training them until they become WD's, then you can assign a dog to each soldier. You can also have them roaming around the front of your entrance and they will actively defend the area against anything. If you suddenly get a dogsplosion and find yourself with a thousand dogs, well....eat them XD
@JustDontDie Жыл бұрын
I don't see that many dogs from traders. Where are you finding them? I might try breeding war animals next run.
@danielrichesdev Жыл бұрын
I usually change the starting animals I get and give myself a breeding pair of dogs / cats and geese, cats for vermin and geese for eggs, you should also be able to request animals specifically from traders rather than hoping they automatically have them.@@JustDontDie

The tight timetable and hazardous mining operations really kept you from building that unstoppable army, though the offscreen game mechanics seem really annoying to deal with. The F Beasts also are an often unfair uncompromising danger that it makes me doubt anyone could conquer this world, even with 150 years. Excellent try and thanks for the inspiration!
