Two Important notes: > All the laughing during Bhante's section was in good fun :) (people had no idea he was going to pull up so they understandably thought it was funny). He was super open to being goofy and was super understanding. > For those making remarks about betterhelp, I've LEGITIMATELY used and and found it to be helpful. Did a lot of research into them as well before taking the deal. You can read up on it here: www.reddit.com/r/cinema_therapy/comments/1dpriql/addressing_the_betterhelp_concerns_headon_deep/

It's a bit of a culture shock. Not to mention that most people and kids these days are not very spiritual or religious, have shorter attention spans, and don't take a lot of things seriously, at least initially. So, I think the audience's reactions were typical and understandable given culture and upbringing. But I don't think they meant to be rude or close-minded. The laughs when Bhante spoke about heroine seemed like shock or awkward laughs, since he was using hyperbole, but they didn't seem mocking. I'd say most of them seemed open and were listening. Also, Bhante's ideas become more powerful on contemplation are might be difficult for beginners, so it almost always takes time to maturely consider and listen. I think that it was a reasonable first step to being more mature and aware about an unfamiliar tradition and set of ideas and values.

Very interesting! Are you a Theravada Buddhist by any chance? I might be wrong, but based on what I've read and learned, I think Theravadins commonly use Pali for mantras, and Vajrayana and Mahayana Buddhists commonly use Sanskrit or Sanskrit mixed with the local dialect. But I could definitely be ignorant about use of Sanskrit in Theravada cultures. In any case, Pali and Sanskrit are closely related and probably derived from the same dialect or group of dialects. Most Buddhist terms and concepts are so similar between both, and Pali just simplifies consonant clusters found in Sanskrit equivalents. Like "dharma' in Sanskrit corresponds to "dhamma" in Pali, "nirvana" in Sanskrit to "nibbana" in Pali, "sutra" in Sanskrit to "sutta" in Pali, and "Bodhisattva" to "Bodhisatta."

All of those people laughing at and dismissing the notion that chasing pleasure despite how detrimental it can be to one’s self are… perfect examples of how chasing pleasure is detrimental to one’s self
@abhijitkurse53Ай бұрын
Bhante makes great points. At a deep level, pleasure is different from meaning, goodness, and genuine happiness. I grew up in Buddhism's relative, Hinduism, and the highest ideals in Hinduism also preach this in a slightly different form, but if you study world religions, you find it there as well. It's cool and beautiful how many or all religions converge in their philosophical or mystical aspects, take Kabbalah for Judaism, Sufism for Islam, and gnostic and mystic sects of Christianity. There is a lot to learn and benefit from all these traditions, even if many ideas cannot be empirically analyzed or grasped. Hopefully, people learn from teachings like Bhante's- it will make the world and life more peaceful and happy.
