as a recently diagnosed autistic girlie whose special interests are fiber arts and Taylor Swift, this trend is honestly made for me haha! I've been so happy about all the generous and informed discussions about the ethical implications of that dress, I think the fibre arts community does criticism (without vitriol!) really well. I think your dress looks so good on you, even if it's a bit longer! I think it really adds to the slouchy vibes and the colours look great on you :) I've been telling myself I don't need to make this dress cause I have so many projects on the go but every time I see a new video about it pop up, I get soooooo tempted! I'm plus size so I know it would take me FOREVER to make it, but I do think it could be a cool experiment?

You should totally be able to add another zero to the price and sell it. Artisans definitely don't get to sell at what the work is worth. Compared to some of the crazy stuff the fashion designers mark prices at for no reason, thanks for bringing up the topic. The dress looks fabulous on you though! 💃

As a maker of knitted items that I sometimes sell, I appreciate you bringing up the fact that people have no idea the amount of work and time that go into making an item. It's not just knowing a stitch, it is ALL the knowledge and experience that goes into making something work out stitch-wise and also have it look nice and fit the person it's made for. I'm tired of people wanting to basically pay what the yarn costs and not even consider my time and skill. Thank you for bringing this issue up. Hand made items cannot compete price-wise with fast fashion, and there's a reason for that.

absolutely. when people offer to pay for the materials and not the time which is hours and hours i think they must not really understand what goes into it.

Thanks so much for bringing up the topic around ethics and handmade items. I have been concerned about this for at least a few years. I like that more people talk about the ethics of crochet garments, my 2 cents : this low price is possible because people that work in factories are not paid per hour but a flat amount per month and only if they reach set targets, so a factory crocheter would be paid 200 dollars per month and made 10 ore 15 pannels ... And this allows for the Designer to add a huge mark up, for example the VRB company has only 2 employees designers but valued their "company" at million dollars just because they pay 200 dollars/month salaries

I love how it turned out! Both the scoop neck and length seem like good choices, to me anyways. I can't stand anything too close to my neck or being paranoid that my butt is hanging out haha! When I seen the price my mind went straight to ethics as well. I don't crochet myself, but my Grandma did and my Ma used to do leather-work, and I remember them talking about how people didn't want to pay them for what their time was worth. I have had a similar experience selling my photography in my husbands handmade frames and it's not a nice feeling. Anyways, thanks for sharing your creative process and thoughts on ethics!

Hey Claire, I don't crochet and I think I'd be pretty useless at it. The skill and time and effort that anyone puts into making anything in crochet is pretty amazing to me. The ethics of making something like this on mass does make me question how something like this dress could ever be as cost effective as it is. I think your dress looks great. I don't wear dresses of any sort myself, that's just for me a sensory nightmare, but it doesn't stop me being able to appreciate the hard work and endurance through that heat wave that went into this beautiful dress. I think you got the colour mix pretty spot on and it looks lovely on you. Excellent job Claire. 😊

You did a great job on the dress. It looks great on you too. 😅 I know crochet can take a long time. A coworker took 1.5 years to make a sweater... one problem after another... things not working out they way the should and having to undo and start parts over making changes. I can't crochet, but I don't think I'd ever have the patience to make something that large.

The colors you chose are so pretty, though if I were to make it (I haven't made a wearable outside of hats, shawls, cowls, scarves, etc.), I probably would swap out the orange for something else. Thanks for the tips on making the dress -- much appreciated. I, too, was shocked at the price. I'd have guessed it would be at least a few hundred dollars. It's funny you mention living under a rock, as told to me over 2 decades ago at this point, I was found under a rock. lol So I probably lived under that rock for a while and lived under some other rocks later on, but it's hard to tell since the rocks generally look similar where I have lived. :) Which is a joke, but also true, since that was a thing people used to say, but I haven't heard in a long time. Oh I also said all of this, because I only became aware of this once I saw you mention it. :) Oh yes that tape... the moment I saw it I also saw a wall of fire in my mind lol and the absolute torment of those tape jobs. Anyway just had to type all this up, because otherwise pretty likely it wouldn't happen and decent chance it doesn''t even at this point, but I've saved spoons for a moment like this so here it is for all. :) hehehe

Hi, love your video. I made this dress too but only 2 colours and more longer. I used dk acrylic yarn and cost me £ 22 or around $40. If I made it with 50% cotton and 50% acrylic it will cost me maybe around $80. Plus my time to do it, took me 4 days ( 24 hours in total ). For $120 per dress I think this isn’t right for the cost of crochet dress unless they did it themselves. I won’t sell the dress for only $120 for handmade without machine. I don’t like the colour combination with Taylor swift dress. Next time I will use 4ply yarn around 3 mm hook because the dress is heavy. I made a lot of dress but this is more heavier. Granny stitch is simple but still take time to finish.

Pricing should be, at minimum, materials+labour cost. With crochet items, unless you are working in incredibly high priced yarn, labour is always the largest part of that equation - by far. Each stitch in a 'simple' design takes as long to do as in a 'complex' design.

Yes and I find that people who are charging a price that reflects a living wage get a lot of pushback

If only make this dress out of different colors because those OG product colors all together are hideous to me (or on me?)! 😂

I think it would look great in over colors - others have made it in all sorts of colors and they look nice

Hey beautiful Claire Barrymore. I think you wear it better than Taylor, but that might just be my opinion. ;)

Not a Swiftie either. I mean, talent? Absolutely. Pretty songs? Sure. It's just not my go to genre of music.

ok, wait a minute. those pictures of the dress look awefully similar to a very large shirt. I wonder what the dividing line is between the two ideas. As for the thing about the supposed wages in other places, you have to keep in mind the cost of living in those places. Take something i heard in another channel i pay attention to, when a volcano erupted in indonesia the channel owner held a donation request for the people affected and in the process of that they stated that money would go a lot farther there due to dollars being vastly worth more than the currency there. Rules and traditions in other places are vastly different than we are familiar with and it is not our place to say what should be for those people, it is their choice no matter of the circumstances there.

Target makes me so angry in the past few years. Iv seen handmade crochet items being sold for$20 and they are made in Taiwan and China. I don't really care how easy it is to make when all children and women are only making PENNIES an hour and working in wearhouse conditions. Its just so sad and deplorable imo.
