These big engines hate pottering around a city, but put them on a motorway where they can just cruise and the economy can be genuinely impressive. But it makes sense, cruising at or just below 70mph and letting the cruise control do the hard work means the engine is putting so little effort it's basically asleep. And if you can be smooth with the controls and can get used to using engine braking rather than the brakes, it makes it even better. I take a lot of joy in seeing what my own V8 car can do economy wise and shock people with how good it can do on a long cruise and is a good way to prove that fun, exciting and powerful cars can be reasonable to run. They'll never be an efficient diesel or petrol/hybrid but it's also a lot more exciting and special. Scotland is a disgustingly beautiful country, every bend seems to end in a view that makes you want to say "wow". Incredible place to drive.

The fuel level sensor in the tank will indicate a lower level when the tank is less than half full due to fuel sloshing around more. The last half of the tank also contains the reserve, the reserve display is often too early and there is actually more fuel and range available.

@@NathanMannin it is a rare model. The 2009-2016 W212 E class had A207/C207 as coupe and cabrio. Originally developed to take the 3rd gen CLK badge, but they then put an E badge on it. That generation of E started with M113 derived V8s. Come 2012 and mid cycle facelift, they started dropping the newer biturbos in: the 5.5 M157 that replaced M156, and it's little brother, the M278. So yes, E63 with the 5.5TTV8 is next up. But I don't want to pay the "AMG tax" to enjoy a V8; all that's needed is a bit of exhaust fettling. 55mpg in one of those!? How on earth did you manage that? I had an Abarth 595 (140bhp) and I swear it did low 40’s max 😆 It is extremely satisfying getting good MPG in cars which normally boast low to high teens 😃 I most definitely cannot recommend the C63 enough, or any big V8 for that matter, they’re so endearing and charismatic. As a petrolhead, they are something you should experience, even if it’s short term because of the high running costs, it’s worth it. I mean, I didn’t anticipate owning my C63 long term, but 4 years later it’s still my ownership! I honestly do not think there’s anything which can induce the feelings what a C63 can, as well as how versatile it is too, especially at it’s price point.

Wow just wow. Of course, no one drives like this every day with such engine power at their disposal, but in fact it is as Clarkson said when racing the Prius with the M3, which was only supposed to stick to the rear of the Prius. You don't have to give up your car to drive economically, you just need to change your driving style. Recently I tested my Focus ST MK3 2.0 EB estate. Distance 260 kilometers. One way, economical without sudden overtaking or driving above 70 mph. It came out to 6.7L/100 kilometers which equates to 42 mpg on average. However, in the other direction, I drove as if I had stolen it... and the result was 18.6L/100 kilometers, (15 mpg.). Fortunately, speed cameras are rare on our motorways. Greetings from Poland.
@NathanMannin7 ай бұрын
Dzięki Maciek! 🇵🇱 That was such an interesting test when they M3 was more economical! But that’s really what it’s all about, it’s about how you drive the car and if you can resist temptation of pressing the accelerator 😆 That is a massive contrast of fuel economy in your Focus, is that a 2.0 petrol? That’s quite a contrast as in the UK the cameras are absolutely everywhere!
@maciekapocaliptic7 ай бұрын
@@NathanMannin Yup, 2.0 EcoBoost with 250 hp bone stock. I just filled it up with Shell`s Racing 100. That back run, I`ve maxed Focus and had 259 km/h GPS straight flat part of motorway (Ford claims 248 km/h) Could fold the mirrors with button, but forgot about it. On daily basis I drive my car "dynamicly" but still reasonably. But main purpose of my test was to check what I can achieve when I`m steady on the throtle and what if I will push it really hard. And conclusion is that car with some amount of power, bigger than average, consumes fuel depending of driving style. And that is absolutely true. You can if you want to, but same time you don`t have to. And in ordinary car maybe you would like to, but you can`t. And that is the difference, and reason to not give up nice cars. Heard about speed cameras in UK. I really feel sorry for british car enthusiast community.

Consumption is better expressed as litres per 100 kilometres (litres/100 km) as that's what you purchase fuel in at the pumps, litres.

@TRPGpilot8 ай бұрын
@@NathanManninI started using L/100km in the UK after I started monitoring my fuel usage. The pumps dispense litres so all I did was changed my odometer to display kilomotres. (MOT test odemeter record also record km if that's wahts displayed). The advantage is no conversion needed and also its a direct display of consumption e.g. 6 lites of fuel is consumed for every 100 kilometres travelled. Also more importantly its a linear scale i.e 12 litres/100km is directly twice as much cunsumption as 6 litres/100 km. MPG is NOT linear e.g. a car getting 50mpg is NOT using half the fuel as one getting 25 mpg.
