Great job. The whole battle is go slow and don't force it. Number one is don't be afraid to take it apart.

I have 6 of these radios. Though I have nicer and more expensive ones, the HD1 is my daily driver. It’s submersible, it feels great in the hand, it works great, and the battery is all-day ready. For the cost, you can’t find a tougher radio. In fact, unless you buy a Moto, I don’t think you can find a tougher radio. Even my AT-D878UVIIIPRO isn’t as tough as my HD1.

One of the more impressive parts about the HD1 to me is just how long the battery can last. Recently took a fairly short day trip from KC to Omaha for work and took my HD1 along as usual. Small mag mount antenna on the company sled roof and left the vfo on 146.520 the entire day. Left home at 0800 and arrived back home at 1900 with about 70% battery left according to the display. There are certainly some things I wish the HD1 did better, but the battery saving function of it, I've never seen on another radio before in my 30 years of playing with radios.

@@elesjuan Yeah, the battery life is impressive with this radio, and spares are dirt cheap. Having said that, don’t trust the numerical display, as on thing this radio does not do well is calculate remaining battery life. I find I usually have “plenty” right before I have none. But, that is usually after the second day of using the radio all day. So, that’s fine.

Good job ... used to do that 20 or 30 times a day with quanshengs modding them to rx only here in vk land ... those knobs you can buy a tool or even make one ..worth it if you plan on doing a few

You’re braver than I am with doing that. I can definitely take it apart… Putting it back together is a completely different story. 73

Good Job Mike! It's to remember that it's also important to hold your mouth right while working on these things! 🙂

Sometimes I miss my HD1. I always use Clorox wipes on my radios. Haven’t seen any problems so far using Clorox wipes.

Nothing is K8MRD Proof.....Nothing ! Many radios have replacement cases available. It's a great way to make a old radio look like new or replace a K8MRD'd radio's damaged or old case. Thanks for the video ! Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I would recommend spending a little more to getting the anytone. But that is purely my recommendation (being an HD-1 owner myself and having went through some complaints about the radio, including the exact screen issue K8MRD had months ago. I personally would have liked to had an anytone instead).

What antenna are you using, and how does it perform compared with the stock? I like the look of it.

Maybe a small square of double-sided tape would have helped with the GPS unit...or a small dab of silicone. Just something to hold it into place during assembly. In any event, thank you for producing another informative video.

I've used Shoe-Goo for similar. It's a silicone based adhesive that stays rubbery when it dries.

I've had this exact same issue. Crazy enough, for me it was isopropyl alcohol which made my screen fail completely. I've had to perform the exact same repair myself (they even sent me extra parts like channel selector switch, which I found was nice). I still have my complaints for the radio but that is entirely due to it being used outside of Ham environment majority of it's use. Great radio though and I learned a valuable new lesson not to use alcohol to wipe my screen :)

My hd1 has receiver issues. It will show receive but have no volume. I can have my uv-5r sitting in the same spot and pick up perfectly clear transmission. Any suggestions on resolving this issue?
