You know, the Hocus Pocus crosses my mind EVERY time I'm stirring that thing!! Weird that I've never made the reference out loud 🤣 will have to change that in future videos. Meanwhile, I fight not to mention Shakespeare in every video...this time I failed 🤣

Find the least expensive baby shampoo and baby conditioner you can. Gently hand wash the chiton in tepid water and rinse. Then dilute about a couple tablespoons of baby conditioner in 2 gallons of tepid water and let it soak in that for a short bit before rinsing it out with cool water. I've had luck with making linen (and other fabric for that matter) softer doing this. It's also how I wash my wool sweaters. Afterwards you might not have to repeat the process but you might have to, to keep it softer, since the fabric has bleach damage. And washing it by hand will make it last longer since it's already damaged. I wash my historical garments in a tote using a sink plunger dedicated to washing clothes - saves my hands doing it that way

Perfect timing! I'm just about to re-dye an old linen blouse I bought from an antique mall and I'm going to try Dharma dye for the first time. Bought three colors and one is the forest green. This blouse is the most boring shade of beige ever, so any color will be an improvement. Enjoy your vacation!

So a dysaster then? 😂 I'm impressed that you did try to save it because I probably would have just dyed it black and hoped that would cover the splotch up. But that's how my fashion taste goes

Heh, my solution to a dye or bleach splotch, is tie-dye :) Camouflage the blotch with more blotches! I even re-dyed the first RIT dye job I ever did. though honestly, it's really pretty wash stable, it's the UV exposure that faded the hell out of it (it's still pretty on the inside of the garment and inside the pockets).

We use a canoe paddle to stir giant pots of jambalaya (similar to paella but a whole giant sugar kettle full). It’d make fine dye stirring and fabric arranging tool. So if you come across one…

Great video! I love the "real life happens and here's how I bend the universe to my will once more" vibe. Next time you order from Dharma, consider getting a bottle of Milsoft. It really works. Also--consider low water immersion dyeing for water colour like effects. I think it's pretty and, since my Parkinson's symptoms have intensified, those variegations help cover up that I do tend to wear my food.

Thank you! And it's definitely good for hot days!! RIT...it has its uses. Especially when done using the hot water technique. But when you're working with natural fibers, it's so much cheaper and more effective than RIT is!

@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Thank you, that's good to know. I've contemplated just buying the white linen/cotton blend fabric from Joann's or a nice white 100% linen from somewhere else & dyeing it the color I want since it's hard to find nice natural fiber fabric in the colors I like. Maybe I will get up the courage to try some Dharma Traders dye. 🙂

The bleach may have been old. The effectiveness and potency goes down drastically after being open for 6 months. Old bleach may be a cause for the bleach struggles. Hope it helps for future use.

In the future, if you need to remove dye or color from plant based fabrics, you might want to try Out White Brite. It's even available at Walmart for about $5 for a jug. You put your fabric into some very hot ( or boiling) water and then add the Out White Brite over the top and stir. Let it sit. It won't disintegrate the fabric like black.. I just tried it for the first time this week after copious amounts of research and am sold!!

Aww, you really suffered just so we could see better. 🥺 I agree with the other commenter, putting wheels under the tub would spare your back. There are wheels that you can put temporarily under furniture that you need to move. And then you just remove the wheels afterwards. The fabric turned out well in the end. 😊
