This dress is absolutely gorgeous, and I love the removable sleeves idea. We get both extremes of weather here in Iowa, so this would make it much more versatile. Also, I appreciate having the curvy girl view.

Yes, we do love some floof. New year’s goals (I HATE the term “resolutions”) are mostly learning focused. 1. I’m actually going to learn how to sew with a machine this year. My aunt gave me her machine from the 70’s and this thing is a monster! I’m already in love. 💜 2. Masala chai. I love it. I hate spending $5-9 dollars on it. I’m making it myself. 3. Finally figure out what’s wrong with my poor old spinning wheel and reduce my wool stash by at least half. I have… um… quite a lot. 😅 Love, love, LOVE the camicia.

My New Year's resolution was to cook more types of potatoes. Currently on the slate are mashed potatoes with garlic comfit bechemel sauce in, potato babka (think like if you made a giant latke/rosti by baking), and mini potato gratin. This year will also be the year I finally make fondant potatoes.

Great gusset tutorial! I'll have to make the camicia but I doubt I'd be able to make any Italian Renaissance gown - still beyond my sewing skills. I love the green gown you made for the 16th century event (which looks fabulous by the way). I wish we had something like this in the mid-west. Was your green gown made out of cotton as well? 🧡💙
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming9 күн бұрын
Hopefully you'll get there! The earlier Renaissance gowns--gamurras--I think are a little simpler. Thank you! I'm happy with it, it's quite comfy 😁 It's a cotton-linen blend from Renaissance Fabrics, they have a few different color options. Nice and breathable!

OMG yes! Victorian bodices are extremely complicated to fit, but you achieved the look! I'm currently working on my late-victorian coat pattern. Man, those freakin' curves! At first I thought 'Oh, I'll just slap those lines Mr Keystone instructs me on paper, adjust the size then tadaaa!' - No. No, and NO! I have a big difference between my waist and hip circumferences but boy, this one challenged my patience. The Keystone Guide is good, though I think they must've had something to smoke while writing that book, considering that "add a trifle to point xyz" (that's not even there yet because it has to be drafted two pages later) seems like a proper measurement for them...making you believe that you're the fool because why would you have one book that has all the instructions without having to reference 2648453 other ones that might not make you look like a fool??..and why the book would help you fit those garments, didn't you have enough instructions all over the place? :D Soooo yeah. Plus this all victorian style lines kind of thing needs to accomodate the fact that sometimes we just don't... well, don't feel like wearing a corset (which I looooove from the moment I tried mine on right after making it). So though I drafted the pattern, yay, amazing, unusable, I then drafted a bodice block, made a paper dummy out of it, I then copied the style lines and approximate ratios from the Keystone pattern to my paper mockup, adjusted the ease and all the goodies then finally, I'm currently in the stage of sewing up my first mockup out of fabric. (Right now, I do not wish to say what I would say to Mr Keystone though...but I think we all know what that would be. :D ) Wish me luck... :D Thank you for these videos, you're amazing!

Gussets do suck. I learned to cut the gusset out with the sleeve so I no longer had to deal with it. It's under my arms so nobody will really be able to notice if it's not done. And there are extant examples where they're done this way. But, if ya gotta piece your fabric then ya gotta piece your fabric.

Thing I bought that was a "nope" or maybe "if you got the mulah" is pre-gusseted ribbon tape (however you say it correctly). Bought to save time with initial fitting of mid/late 1800s corsets but its too flimsy so not helpful (might just be the one I bought) there's too much spacing between holes and I think they were punched not awled first. Still procrastinating on my stays but enjoyed the video. I mean I made a short stays that work but I want to make it again with front lacing for easy use as a sports bra alternative in summer, and the full length 1760s(?) stays I need to adjust length and remake. My favorite clothing era is 1890s-1910 but I don't like the idea of metal boning soo I might just mix and math and not fuss, history bound rather than historically accurate. But maybe a little metal where needed and the rest as zip tie will be less daunting.
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming6 күн бұрын
Nothing wrong with doing a blend of zip ties and metal boning! I do that with all my corsets. Otherwise it's just too dang heavy! Slap your metal on the spots that bear a lot of strain (100% need them on both sides of your grommets) and use zips for the rest of them ☺️

I made my husband an 18th century undershirt.. waaaaaaaaay too big in the body-he was swimming in it haha, and too narrow at the upper arm but thankfully that was gathered down so was able to seam rip and rework everything (well neck hole/collar was fine so no alterations there). Not much of a "surprise gift" when it doesn't fit then I make him try it on after every step when remaking, but whatever, finished it (now fitting) Christmas Eve at like 11:45pm.

i know im over a year late, but i just got materials for my first sewing project (linen fabric and aquamarine rit dye), and want a more baby blue color. would i just use less dye and boil it for less time to get a softer color and not the bright blue?
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming12 күн бұрын
Never too late! I'm usually pretty good at catching questions. You could try less dye on a test swatch and see, although because it's aquamarine it'll always have a greener cast to it than a true baby blue. But if you're going to the trouble of using linen, you're better off buying a baby blue shade of fiber reactive dye that won't fade in the wash 😉
