Used to have an 820Si in storm grey. It was a very civilised way to travel. One thing to mention. The 2 litre T series didn't suffer from the head gasket issues (kinda). The only thing you generally get with them is a small weep of oil from the front of the engine on the passenger side. This is due to the block which is identical to that in a 2 litre O series fitted to a Maestro or Montego.

That 'small weep' was just that and nothing of concern. "They all do that sir......". My M16 certainly did and lasted over 120,000 miles before regular PCV cleans were required due to blow-by. I don't know if the T series was any better than the M16, but that stupid grille on the front of the bonnet 'uglified' a once handsome car.

Its had the tailgate and most of the interior from a higher spec V6 Sterling fastback - a previous keeper had just salvaged the 820i badges from the original and plonked the above the Sterling one. Makes me feel old to think that even the earliest of these facelift 800s are now approaching 33 years old now. Once again a great find and hugely entertaining rescue! 👍👍
@procta23439 ай бұрын
yeah i was thinking that's had an interior from the higher spec, and boot lid. I am suspecting that those popped up at a decent price for the owner at the time, shame they never got the wheels though. If that had been me doing that, id have gone the full smash, and had rear doors been electric too, rather than the manual. I bet these are getting tricky for bits now, as most yards wont keep cars in this age, plus many of these were binned off well before their time, when rover went bust. The bottom of old rovers just dropped out. So dealer were just Weighing these in left right and centre, some of the turbo ones were getting their engines pulled for the Rover 200.
@bigboost26414 ай бұрын
Yep the Sterling was the high end model hence someone fitting the interior and adding the prestigious badge to the rear.
@MichaelThomas-be7gq10 ай бұрын
I always hankered for a 800 Fastback, and you are right, that car had a lot more to give, even at 110,000+ miles. Do the 600, the mid to late 90s Rovers were superb. I had a 620Si, and later got the fire-breathing 623GSi, and she was a quick sort and a sublime drive, they were both autos but the quality, the interior, and the 623 had full leather, it was an epic place to be. Honestly, well done, I loved every minute. If you fancy the King of the Rovers - do a P6, the engineering quality will blow you away (the rust might not) but they are big on Rover DNA. KBO, my friend. Love this channel.

If the alternator is not charging might be worth an exercise to look at it first before replacing it. If the bearings are ok and windings complete then usually it is just the diode pack. A new alternator can be £100 or more but a diode pack is around £20. A bit more hassle but might be useful footage for a KZbin as well as saving costs. (Actually quite easy to change out a diode pack) 😊
@richardhemingway608410 ай бұрын
I thought the same. The usual thing with alternators that have been stood around, is the slip rings, brushes and holder sticking.

They’re making modern head units with a fast touch screen so you don’t feel tempted to get rid of it for want of modern conveniences. That aside, I love the fact that it’s mostly analogue. The five instruments have real moving needles and bonus, I still own them when the ignition key is out. Unlike modern cars, where I feel you’re renting everything that’s virtual and disappears when you turn it off. I do not like entirely screen based dashboards.

I have to say, as a yankee, that is a good looking car, and also looks well appointed. We have cool cars from the 80s as well but sadly most have gone to the scrapper because of neglect and people not realizing just how reliable and cool they really are! The engine sounds good on that one, I would suggest a coolant exchange if not flush, many people don't care what type of coolant they add or the type of water they use in the cooling system. It is critical that only distilled water is used to dilute concentrated coolant! Also only the factory coolant or the modern upgraded coolant is used, otherwise you get rapid corrosion and blown head gaskets and leaks, bad heater cores and radiators. Just some advice from an old wrench that's been doing this 50 years😂😂😂✌️💯

Great car and awesome video. Thank you for sharing this experience. I honestly don’t know what it is about our love for Rovers, I wonder if it’s because we all love an underdog and let’s face it, Rovers was the underdog of the British motor industry. I have a 2004 1.4 Rover 25 which was a hand me down from my late grandparents. I hated it at first, I was embarrassed to drive it, but as time went on and I got a few more miles out of it and started working on it, I have become quite attached to it. Rover did make some great cars that do stand the rest of time (with a bit of love and care)

Another great vid. Nice to see a youtuber actually put the effort into the restoration/running effort of a classic, although i think the welding leaves a bit to be desired! Another plus is the fact that you are not one of those that gets a free/cheap classic and changes a battery and/or gives a wash and suddenly they think car is now worth 10k! Just caught up with this. I've only just started to watch stuff on you channel. Brilliant stuff here. I've been a Rover fan for as long.I can remember. I own 3 Rover 800s and at one I had 6. The earliest carnI have is an '87 D-reg 820e and the newest one a '95 N-reg 827 Sterling, the other one is an '87 E-reg Sterling with the earlier 2.5 V6 (pre 2.7) That's a brilliant save there, I absolutely enjoyed watching this lovely car being brought back to life. Had I known at the time I'd have offered some bits as I have bits and bobs lying about. As others have said, that is a mid-spec 820i that someone has tried to "Sterling" up with leather seats. The rear seat back that came with the car was actually from a later car as the back is fluted leather rather than the flat backed leather seat. It's a shame they didn't get the rear back but these can be found as there are many of us that have bits and bobs lying about still.

Another great video Ben and another classic saved for the road! :). I love the 2nd gen 800! I was lucky enough to be able to waft around in a (then) 5 year old 1997P 825 KV6 Sterling when I was 22 as it was cheaper to insure than my 1995 Vauxhall Vectra B 1.8GLS! I still say that that was one of the finest sounding V6s! These T-16 engines are good solid lumps - seen use in the R8 200/400s and the 600s as well as these. Best known in 197bhp turbo form in the R8 Tomcat coupes. Other than a wee oil seep from the block it's normally solid (though the turbo ones have been known to blow the big ends on occasion). The temp gauge issue may be a faulty thermostat - I encountered a similar issue with a Mondeo 3 where the gauge would vary depending on the undulation of the road and I was worried about HGF trouble or that and it was just one of the thermostats had failed.

1:06:40... just the sort of stuff I hate. Things requiring unreasonable force. Today my colleague and I struggled for 45 minutes to get a handle on a resistance decade re-installed. It popped out like nothing when we went to take the cover off (something rattling inside*), but it took the two of us and entirely unreasonable force to get it back in its mounting brackett. Nuts. 1:11:05 nope, it's the belts inside the tape player (surprised it even worked, tbh...). You can still order sets of belts for most stereos off Ebay. For some reason they all seem to come from Portugal, so that might be a bit of an issue in the UK, but the option is there. (*): two pieces of clear plastic that were obviously stuck down at some point, but had detached; completely unclear where they originally were or what their function was, but the decade box seems to work fine with said pieces of plastic now in my bin, so I think I'll just leave it. 😁

Really enjoyed watching that, remember the 820i being the company car of choice in the 90's, surprised how well it went! Cheers Steve from Sydney, Aus (originally from Stockport)

I had the honour of owning an 820 vitesse turbo and that was seriously quick. 200 ish bhp from factory, recaro seats and the same spoiler as yours which looks suspiciously like it's off a vitesse lol. great video. Thanks

I love these long videos, but this one seemed almost too easy! Great job getting another British oldie back on the road.

Great video, Ben. The idea with the dowels on the alternator flange is that you knock them in with a few taps with a hammer and when you tighten the bolts they slide back out. Richard

Never sit on a motorway hard shoulder unless you really have no choice, I was having a panic attack just watching 👀 Fantastic episode, it bought so many memories back of my red 820si fastback I had years ago, they were way ahead of their time in styling and dreamed of owning a 827 Vitesse!

Ben, this was another superb resurrection video, really loved it. I think the Rover 800 series was a great car, underrated at the time. Great job in getting another great car back on the road. I can't believe how well it started after being stood for over 8 years with stale fuel in the tank. Yes I was one of those people who was cringing at doing a long and spirited drive with an old timing belt........☺ Anyway, really looking forward to the next video, hopefully it will be the Saab.

British legend with japanese roots, it's actually a Honda Legend.
@johnbrereton52296 ай бұрын
No it isnt ! These cars were jointly designed by Honda and Rover at their Cowley plant and even the Legends were built there, but had different body work to the Rovers.. Also the majority of the engines used were Rovers with only the V6 using a Honda design untill Rovers own V6 became available.

Great video again. I agree on the car comfort from the 90s. I’ve got a P reg Citroen ZX and the seats are like armchairs whereas my 2020 Skoda has seats like blocks of concrete. I had a ‘94 Escort as well and the seats were super comfy.

🎉I'm amazed you say how lively it was , my 820se had the same engine as yours but the full boot not the hatch. It didn't have a speedo, it was fitted with a calendar........it was so slow . It finally did what all those engines did and developed a sticky valve and went lumpy so I got rid . But I have to say it was a very comfy car and ride. Later i had a 623gsi in firenze red , cream leather auto ......wow what a motor that was beautiful to drive till i finally swapped it .

Great channel , great gentleman .. very good presentation , and entertaining video . Personally I would have left it where it was , as they were no good when they were new , and time hasn’t made them better ! There was a good reason it was left in the garage for 8 years ! Look forward to your next video .

Agreed. I’d never heard of her until TC featured “A Tether”, which is excellent. Not sure but perhaps my favourite by her is “Tarry Not”, it’s a very moving song about being where you belong.

UNBELIEVABLE!!! Probably the best video I've seen all year. What a lovely old rover,pity it wasn't the vitesse though!! They don't make rovers like they used to. Great work to get her back on the road,did you get the missing wheel trim and did it sell on eBay and for how much??? Loved it❤

Excellent getting the old girl back on the road, reminded me of my first car after passing test at 19, it was a Rover 214 Si , thought it was the business great car and regret selling it

My buddy has a 2 litre that's 1000 hp, never diss a 2.0😂😂😂 of course its a Mitsubishi built for the Eagle talon and he did extensive port work on the head and built his own sheet metal intake manifold and installed giant injectors and giant turbo, all on the stock bottom end, it's held up well being that he built it 20 years ago and still races it most every day. This is a sub 9 second 1/4 mile car. You scored with that Rover mate, good job! Now to the fun part, disassembling the whole interior and steaming every bit, removing mold stains, and painstakingly re installing every piece in correct order.😂😂😂 I know, I do this work for a living, taking cool vintage cars and trucks and restoring them to perfect order and as new for the cool people to enjoy! 50 years I've been doing this, and yes sometimes it's frustrating but the rewards of a job well done outweigh the down falls of restoration👍👍💯💯💯✌️👏👏👏👏
