When he says that the speedometer was stuck on 66666 remind me of 02 super glide I had.i put a new digital speedo on and a low voltage spike, bad battery, caused it to go to all 666666 17:09 17:09 17:09 Kinda freaked me out, like a bad omen? Owned it for 5 years,no problems, sold it and got a wide glide now.

@@tomparth3398 Talking about odometers I was in Vantage Washington and being in a 1%er club at the time I must have been the least intimidating because a guy filling up his Dyna said "Hey I have to show someone this"..... He took me to his bike and the Odometer said 400,000 exactly. I asked "Have you ever rebuilt the motor"? He said, "NO, just rode it". He put his helmet on and rode away after taking a picture of the odometer.

I normally don't watch videos this long especially when they are about recovering/restoring bikes like this without fast forwarding through them, but I have to say that this one intrigued me from the start. I ended up watching it in its entirety, and I found myself grinning when you got the bike running! SO glad you were able to find and buy your dad's bike! If you don't mind my suggestion, what I would do now is restore it to how it looked when your dad owned it, or as close to it as you can get. Please keep us updated on your progress!

So glad you are on your own!! Way better to watch! Tip: Pour a bit of oil in each spark plug hole before you turn it over the first time. You might have scored the piston walls. Also if all the oil is in the crankcase you should have drained some out before turning it over to not overpressurize the oil pump.

Brings me back to a year ago when I bought my first bike at age 17, and 2001 Harley Sportster 883. Little did I know that it had "cruise control", aka the throttle return cable was completely broken. Had a lot of fun memories working on that bike, and some not so good ones of lowsiding it. But I'm grateful because it has brought me to where I am today.

I loved this video because the bike was your dad's & partly because about 2 1/2 years ago I bought a 1992 Sportster 883 that supposedly sat under a tarp in a backyard for eight years! I paid $2000.00 for it (with 2 new tires) and rode it home and have working on it since and have done quite a bit to it. I have a huge benefit of having an experienced biker/Harley builder right next to my apartment who's been very willing to help me with knowledge and even parts! Whenever I start doing something he usually shows up & helps! I too would like to see more Harley content.

Enjoyed your video. I own and currently ride the exact same model, a 1968 XLH. The XLH came originally with the larger 4 gallon tank and different headlight nacelle. The XLCH kickstart only ran the 2.2 gallon peanut tank. Also, we call the right side shift the "correct side" for shifting. Growing up, we called sportsters "dirt bikes" because they came from the original flatheads that raced the dirt circuits.

Amazing video Craig. Reminds me of my first bike I baught when I was 13. It was a yamaha TS50, had no clutch or starter. Just put it in neutral, run, jump on the bike and drop a gear. It ran 100% like that in the bush for nearly a year till my friend ran it like a 2 stroke and blew the motor. Oh the good old days
