I had identical experience with root washing. Three avocado trees very gingerly removed soil medium then transplanted in Gary’s Top Pot mix topped with compost. I had anticipated the trees would have huge growth after but instead did nothing all season, couldn’t understand why and was totally perplexed!

I agree that sometimes the growth isn't what we expect when we wash the roots. I have discussed this elsewhere because for more (in my conditions) the wood product hasn't been an issue if the tree is strong and healthy.

It was wonderful of them to share their nursery. What great hosts!

Yes! Epicenter has so worked so hard & so long trying to find the best varieties for the area. So much knowledge to share! It was wonderful! Thanks for joining me!

Thanks to Epicenter and Negrete for sharing their knowledge. I have all my cados in pots. What they said about root washing stunting growth is true. I used to believe either root wash or root rot. I lost a tree after root washing. Survived ones took long time to grow. They proved no need to root wash as long as outer soil is health. Thank you!

It is great to hear from someone who has gone through a similar experience! It's always nice to have more feedback to make informed decisions. Perhaps when there is wood in the mix not over watering is perhaps a bigger issue. I say this because I have some smaller ones in pots and I noticed they do better when I space out the watering and they have wood product.

The long wait is over!~ Ellen is the best. I've had a Reed in a container for a couple years now. Flowered this summer.

Wonderful! Can I ask which soil you use?
@ragnaraxelson59Ай бұрын
@growyourownavocados for the Reed I ended up using what's called "cart path material". It's the closest thing to DG that I could find in Canada. The rest of my trees I try and emulate Gary's Top Pot. I make my own charcoal in the fireplace.

Thanks for the feedback! It seems that lots of people are using a similar mix with great success. I enjoy Epicenter's input. I still use wood in my mix and I haven't had issues but I also make sure I don't overwater. I once rinsed the roots & like Epicenter the tree took a long time to recover for me as well.@ragnaraxelson59

Glad it was helpful! It's from the complete Epicenter video but this part definitely needed it's own spot & discussion.

Thanks for sharing! It's great to see that avocados can thrive in containers too!

Absolutely! Lots of us have small yards or don't have a permanent spot available so it's good to have alternatives whether it's to get them going or keeping them in containers.

1:26 Huh? Rinsing roots? I've never done that. And I find that repotted trees take rapidly to fresh soil.
@growyourownavocadosАй бұрын
I appreciate your feedback and input. They are referring to Gary Matsuoka's lectures & advice from Laguna Hills nursery. Later on they say it isn't necessary as long as the roots are moving past the wood product in the rootball. Part of why I am sharing this is to show people that there are different methods. I respect all who share their knowledge & encourage people to see what works there is definitely more than one way to do things. I also do not rinse the roots of only if & when I need to make them smaller when putting into a container.

I am not sure if Epicenter is propagating them. You can try contacting Epicenter through their website.@@EdwardStokes-mm4nc

The short answer is no, avo hate pots, most growers tend to over water, I'm with Julie would never recommend long term, I've seen them last over 20 years in pots but it did not fruit and very unlikely to produce much fruit for average grower.

If you listen to the whole thing we talk about how some people rent and are going to move and this could be an option for them or have s patio and want to grow for fun. I agree, someday you would want to put them into the ground. Even the Mexico container growing is becoming more common. My channel is to share & encourage people to grow what they want to grow. Some people seem skilled at this. www.freshfruitportal.com/news/2023/11/24/qa-growing-avocados-in-containers-becoming-more-popular-in-mexico/?fbclid=IwY2xjawGoTXpleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHQTv7eEeu8mMkpXZ_Vx5fQ45uTkRYhnHnafSxHMl2OLat9h1D7l68pBZHg_aem_QSG7A8N2hffDrtsrBNBznQ
