This is simply how I do it and get the best results. I have disturbed the roots & washed the roots but this method of letting the roots do their thing has worked well for me. I know rinsing the roots is very common now but I don't feel the need to anymore and I have very clay soil but trees don't die even with the woodchips. In Hawaii they just put it in the ground like any other tree as do I which is what this method is. I made the video because people get trees from me and some are not familiar with how to plant or up pot.

Very true! I've had to learn this the hard way last year when I uppotted a 3 year avocado that I grew from seed. I trimmed the roots back even as well ... that was a hard lesson, but i learned from it.

I agree, there is always more to learn. Thanks for your feedback!

It was mentioned that there are other methods & ways. I agree and have tried different ones including rinsing away the roots but for me this is my favorite way, also the easiest, quickest & least expensive. Maybe I am just lazy. 😉

Thanks for the feedback. There different methods but I find this is the easiest and very reliable.

Great advice! I need to repot a few of mine. But I’ll probably wait until spring now.

Thanks for watching. Everyone has their own method this is the one that works for me.

I’ve also had good success several times keeping root together by cutting the bottom and side of container with metal shears when up potting
@growyourownavocados2 ай бұрын
Oh yes! That was the way I used to do it all the time and still works great. Perhaps I am just trying to save money by saving the pot.

When I do end up disturbing the roots is when it’s rootbound loosen up the rootball, I’ve also sprayed the rootball down with water but I did a little trial where one was put in the sun and the other one stayed in the shade and the one in the shade made it and the one in full sun died! That soil mix is solid with a little more DG it goes long ways.

In the epicenter video, they talk about using DJ with pumice, perlite & peat moss. Although I don't do it that way, I know they definitely know what they're doing! I did buy a bag of perlite though so i am moving that direction.

My friend has had good luck with DG but pure DG dries out too fast in hot areas.

I learned this too. Gary M said the poor sawdust potting soil that most avos come in would cause root rot, so I'd wash it off, then as you said the tree goes into shock and doesn't recover for months. But if you've got good sandy soil then planting w/o washing doesn't cause root rot as the roots can breath. You can even take a slim steel rod poke around the tree to further aeration. Root rot seems mostly in heavy clay areas. Thx for the videos

Thanks, I appreciate the input. In the Epicenter video they mentioned removing all the organic matter and in their experience it isn't necessary as long as the roots are bypassing the rootball. I have clay soil as well but I don't remove the original soil in the pot. I do like Gary's formula but we each do things our own way. In Hawaii they just put them in the ground.

I do tease root clusters at the bottom, to orient them for spreading out in their new pot, but generally leave the sides alone. I don't face extreme dryness like this host does. I repot mine during milder spells of weather and the plants leaf out quickly. The basic rule is roots should be in contact with soil, instead of each other.

Thanks for sharing your techiques. Very interesting. I can see & imagine that. Sometimes when I get them from a sleeve the roots are too long & I will rinsed the very bottom so it all fits into a larger container & it works well. Here I present the easiest way to do it especially for for those new to growing avocados.

Good video, wondering why you stake your trees so much? I found that if you let them grow without staking them they do fine, they put energy into making a strong stock. The store/nursery trees you have to gradually free them up. Just what I do, I appreciate your videos.
@growyourownavocados2 ай бұрын
Good tip! Those stakes came with the trees. In ground, like you, I usually remove them right away.
@growyourownavocados2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I agree with you on stakes. I only use them if the tree trunk will flop over without one.

Ya roots looked good you don't over water in a pot , many over water pots and kill the tree or give a root rot condition.
