Ours is just under 2m so always thought there's now way with building regs, but interested in the bit about the height requirement is only for the top of the stairs. Is possible then to do something like lower the ceiling above the stairs only to give the head height there, but the rest of the room with a reduced height? Maybe step up or a slope from the "taller" section to the "shorter" section?
@djmooreloftconversionspeci458 Жыл бұрын
Possible with something called a dropped landing if you look in to that and with maybe a window too above could help but with out seeing its hard to tell.

Excellent video, glad I found this! I live in a 2020 Barratt Homes build, 4 bed detatched and we have over 3 meters in the attic. The one thing I've heard second hand from various people is that new builds could require the roof is taken off to fit steel support beams. Is there any truth to that? It's a truss roof, had the old 'don't put anything in the attic' schpeil at time of purchase, standard. Cheers!

Absolute rubbish 80% of our work now days is Truss roofs and have no need to remove the roof. Take alook through our videos we explain different ways and types of conversions. I hope it helps and good luck.
@_.alex.-Ай бұрын
@@djmooreloftconversionspeci458 haha, nice one thank you! Very promising to hear that we're likely to be able to expand our 4 bed home rather than have to move, the conversion would work out cheaper, even at the higher end. Appreciate the reply, I've been working through your vids this afternoon and your work is amazing, shame I'm based in Cornwall! Cheers and all the best.

I’m buying a salt roof house. It’s probably only 2-3 foot lower from other side. I want to a loft conversion to create large bedroom and storage. House is 7meters wide and 12m length to garden. The front of the house would look really weird if just took out the chunky large box on side on house. Can you recommend a roof can I change to within in a very small budget. How much does a new roof cost. Can someone just do the frame bit only
@notofthisworld7777 Жыл бұрын
If you did the job yourself and just got someone else to fit the velux windows, how much would that cost? My house is an end townhouse 3 storeys built in 2001. You don't need any steel do you?
@djmooreloftconversionspeci458 Жыл бұрын
Difficult to say if you need steel or not. But in most case I would say yes if a truss roof. Problem with a 3 story home is the fire regs as it gets a little bit more complex as they would expecting misting system if going to 4 stories.

@@djmooreloftconversionspeci458 sorry I’m just wondering, when u mentioned a minimum head height, does it apply to the stairs below or the space inside the loft itself, sorry for confusion and thanks for the response
@blizteredthumbs7911Ай бұрын
Hiya, great info. So our new property has a vast area of space, what it doesn't have is a vast head height. But, being 6' tall, it's not impossible to walk in the middle, I just need to duck a slight bit. So, my question is, the roof is a steep degree, definitely a sag free design on the left and the right as you look down the tunnels (all directions) but in the center there are ridge beams, they are held in by two nails above and below.. I wouldn't even say structural, they are nailed to the sides of the ceiling and ridge beams (floating) .. are these safe to remove? They are NOT down supported or original truss design, I've even found one without a single nail shot into the base piece. What do you think?
@blizteredthumbs7911Ай бұрын
Just in case it's coming across as confusing. In your video when you're stood showing an example of an attic unconverted. The vertical center beams, mine are literally an add on, maybe anti ridge sag. The ones in your video left and right, maybe 45 degrees, I don't have those, I just have the near pointless verticals. They are butted up and nailed in. Is it safe to remove a portion of these? Just to open a space.

Sorry I wouldn’t be able to comment. Best to speak to someone that’s can visit to confirm or a structural engineer

My question is always about the wall around protected stair, they need to be fire rated but how does one prove rating of existing walls 30 or 60 min. Moreover, if one can't prove the fire performance of walls around the stairs or needs upgrade, how doe this actually work? Does the stair need to be taken down, walls upgraded with layer of plaster to both sides and then rebuilt?

Hi, I am in the USA, but also have a trussed roof. My main roof above second story has plenty of height for another room or two albeit small. My garage same kind of trussing. For the time being before I convert them do you think there is any risk in storing things up in the attics?
@djmooreloftconversionspeci4589 ай бұрын
In the uk ins very common to use the space for storage. Just have to be respectful of the amount of weight you store up there I guess.

yes some times its just better to put a new roof on and start from scratch.

Hi 👋 I have a 3 storey town house, built in 2004. The roof trusses are what are soemtiems know as "top hat" trusses, so they come in 2 sections. Are these able to be converted? Also, Are there any restrictions in turns a 3 storey into a 4? I read that I'd need a sprinkler system installed but so read that having fire alarms hardwired in would do. Any advice on this please. Thank you
@djmooreloftconversionspeci458 Жыл бұрын
yes that style would still be able to be done. yes most cases you would need a misting system installed how ever we have used a fire engineer to generate a report saying that fire doors and smokes alarms through out would be enough and we have done a few this way and been passed off.
