When we think about Ghillie Suits, we often think about the best possible camouflage solution to wear on the body. This might be true for the naked eye as well as for night vision devices, that work with near infrared. But thermal imaging devices are now more common than ever before.
Camouflage companies made "super secret" thermal camouflage suits. And some people know, that they often do not make you invisible to the thermal sensor. And also with thermal camouflage it is about all aspects of camouflage.
But now lets try to hide from this Pulsar Axion 2 XG35 device. This is an affordable handhelt device, that is sold to hunters. I will use my not specially modified ghillie suit. In this video I will also spray it with water and add natural vegetation.
Please also keep in mind, that this video is not a representation for all thermal devices and all camouflage suits. There are differences and some may will work better or worse.

To avoid detection by thermal view you have, to throw away the hot rifle and cover completely in thick mud, then fight with bow and arrow.... It has all been demonstrated in an educational movie from the 80s 😅

With the same thermal device i found that on sunny days even in early spring, where sunshine hits it will heat up things so it shines like a body. So if you have a thermal yourself, find a spot where sunlight is hitting, maybe next to some hot rocks, and you can blend into that. Worst place to hide is in a shaded and cool place.

We experimented with this back in the mid nineties when I served on a battle tank with thermal imaging. I have also since been a sniper for around 13 years where I got to be at the "receiving" end making us focus a lot on camouflage techniques. When mobile the best tips I can give is to hide behind ridges, down in small valleys and just put a big amount of rock and or vegetation between you as a hot source and the observer making you 100% invisible. When stationary the same applies but usually you are supposed to observe the enemy and therefor must come to a position where you can see something. The trick is to have a cold front, at the same temperatures as the environment, towards the enemy observing with thermal imaging. The shield in form of tarp or whatever must not be heated up from one side. This will otherwise be visible. One option can be to have to shield layers with fresh air with correct temperature circulating between the two layers. Recommend anyone wanting to stay hidden from someone with thermal capabilities to train with such tools to really understand how it works and how to prevent being observed.
@GTRNights
@GTRNights 9 ай бұрын
100% correct. In the type of scenario he's showing, you could be a sniper or FO, but generally if you're out by yourself, this is an E&E situation and there's no way they should be that close to you. Initial movement should put miles between you and the trackers, and to then continue evading requires use of the densest foliage possible and terrain as you said. Thermal has also changed the game, whereas it used to be best to sleep and do maintenance things during the day, and then move at night... now it's flipped. You want to move during the day and find the best possible cover at night to try to stay hidden. Especially against a professional force which will likely have airborne thermal looking down, so hard overhead cover is a must.

I've always wondered if you can spot humans with IR if they're hiding beside a rock or in a rock crevice (depending on the time of day)
@johnmoe2806
@johnmoe2806 9 ай бұрын
@@mark7362 It all depends on the temperature surface in the 2D plane you watch through the sensor. If the rock surface has the same temperature as the fabric used by the human it's harder to spot then if the temperature on the two surfaces are different. The bigger difference the easier to spot. You can easily spot temp differences on a naked person. All extremities is normally colder then the human core but the temp diff is not that big. Back in the days serving on Leopard 1 we used to switch between thermal and daysight when spotting and thus get the best from two worlds. What you think you see with one of the two is usually confirmed or disproved with the other. Daytime sensors require you to use all camouflage principals in the book like color, contrast, light, shadow, shine, silhouette, movement, etc. For thermal sensors the mentioned camouflage principals is less important but now you must blend in based on surface temperature. Try to avoid movement in areas where thermal sensors observe the area. When stationary you would have a layer in front of you observation post to hide from thermal capacity and you must add good camouflage in front of that to avoid getting spotted by daytime sensors like binoculars, spotting scope, etc. The best is to be behind natural cover and just have a tiny hole to see through. The insertion should happen behind cover 100% when "close" to enemy position. The enemy observation capacity and their sensors defines what close means.

You can combine two old Soviet combat capes by stitching in a thermal space blanket between them. The noise is minimal. You can make a thicker insulated sleeve for your weapon too. In Ukraine I came up with the idea of keeping my helmet off at night to help mask thermal signature. Thought process, I would notice people in my sister lpop at night having on hot ass helmets when poking heads up for peak with nvgs or thermal(Helmets after being worn for about 5-20 minutes become very hot from trapped heat permeating through the shell). We would peak just to eye level every 3-10 minutes for a scan and then back down. So I would only put on my helmet for my very breif scan of my surroundings and then go back down and take it off to keep it at the natural outdoor temperature. Also good scrim can add texture to the helmet for both nods and thermals and that can help imo especially with a still cold helmet

A technique for hiding on the forest floor that would likely reduce your thermal signature, too, is to burrow under the forest litter and use it as a cover on top of you. If you use a waterproof, army bivy bag, the type that pulls up over your waist you can tie it off around you, then make a hole in the forest litter with a knife or your digging tool, push under the litter and then create another hole at the end, essentially you end up under the forest litter with it on top of your body, the bivy bag making sure that the bottom half of your body stays dry, the bag should prevent some heat escaping too. If the litter above you is thick enough it should do a good job of hiding your thermal signature too, the exit hole you create can be pulled down to hide your head and pushed up and held in position by sticks to allow you to poke your weapon muzzle out of the end, this is only useful for a static OP though, useful if you want to sleep too, if done in long grass it's very difficult to spot you, unless someone actually steps on you.

It can also be an ABSORBENT material similar to fur or fibre-glass insulation which TRAPS any waveforms from get BACK OUT and creating a detectable signal return. Many towns have a business that will sell these glass panels intended for use on desks. Imagine a glass topped sofa table or dining room table with camo netting draped over it. To look while concealed you need a periscope, a camera/screen combination, a fiberoptic solution or something similar. It's very obvious though that several things make a difference, which means to achieve a camouflage suit that works at least to SOME degree against thermal sensors is just a matter of engineering, design and effort. A reflective "blanket" that is also camouflaged normally. With grips that allows holding it, and preferably also mounting it to the ground, without touching it in such a way that you transfer any real amount of heat to it. A double or even multilayer camo suit, with narrow stripes of insulating material keeping them separated by a layer of air. A better/more thorough "screen" of plant material, or better yet, make something that mimics the same effect as part of the camo suit. And you're probably going to need a facemask of some sort to have any real chance of concealing the face. However, there, breathing obviously becomes an instant issue, so, might need something closer to the plant material effect, ie, covering up without actually closing up around your head in any way. An adapted reflective blanket, easily doable. The layered camo suit, considerably more difficult to achieve, but probably still doable, though might be pricey and probably a bit inconvenient to wear. Artificial screening material that can added to the suit, at distance, this might work entirely alone, but at the same time, also the most difficult thing to design. Also, there's a distinct risk here that all of the above might end up making you a very blatant object for any sort of radarbased sensor. Still, clearly, it is possible to achieve functional camo against IR.

The thermal signature of the mylar could only be practically reduced by maintaining distance from it. A hasty application of this idea might be to somehow utilize some small branches/limbs to provide structural support for the mylar while maintaining distance from body contact. With luck, air currents will dissipate the heat that is escaping around the perimeter of the mylar, so it doesn't significantly heat up _other_ material.

It's interesting how you chose black plastic since I'd always heard that it was basically transparent in thermal imaging, whereas glass looks completely opaque, so it's like the two are switched when you go to thermal imaging from visible light imaging. So I think that means that glass could actually be pretty useful for camouflage. Visually it doesn't obscure anything as long as you make sure there's no glare. I think as long as there's no direct contact it shouldn't heat up all that much either. I just got a thermal camera so I'll have to experiment with this.

It’s definitely fairly easy to hide from thermal sensors. You just have to know how it’s not very hard at all. I know how to do it and a few other people do too. There was some people somewhere actually selling suits that would block it but I think they stopped for some reason don’t know why but I know their general location they were selling pants for like $400 and I’m not sure what the tops were And they gave demonstrations which worked very well. The only thing is when you have to pull out your rifle to shoot but if you keep it hidden, it’s no problem unless you go for a long time and work up a sweat you have to have a way to vent in a certain way, you only need three products and then you can cover that with a Gilly suit. I won’t tell you what they are because everyone would make one.

i have 4 in stock they are maid of military tent materials that specifically block thermal optics its secondary cooling is water tank cooled by negative pressure from 2 sources a co2 canister and 2 pumps that dump cooled water on top for extra cooling during heavy movements the sides are open on the infiltrator version for quick access to snacks or whatever lol it also comes with physical penetration testing tools and a false thermal signature that doubles as heating. I recommend the brick camo version for urban environments statistical probability of meshing with this surface

Take space blankets, memory foam pillow, turn inside out the uniform and take a bottle of glue spray. First layer should be heat retention (silver) OUTWARDS, gold towards body. Spray it, glue it to the uniform. Second layer, pinch some pieces from the memory foam pillow, keep 'em same thickness if possible, spray glue, sprinkle it. Third layer, golden towards foam, silver towards body. You'll cook alive but you will be backround human shaped sillouette.
@Stormcloakvictory
@Stormcloakvictory 6 ай бұрын
Hmm maybe you can try fishnet under layer? It's used as a base layer to prevent cooling down as the mid layer won't have contact with your body, or at least much less than with a dense fabric base layer, works even better than a merino wool base layer sometimes. It keeps you both (a little) cooler in summer and (a lot) warmer in winter due to the air pockets in the mesh preventing heat transfer by touching layers. On it's own a fishnet base layer won't help. But I could imagine mesh base layer, solid thin mid layer, then thick gauge mesh layer over that, and then wear the ghillie over that. There'd be multiple layers that don't touch your body nor eachother.

Interesting video. However, if an operator wears a thermal reflective suit w/mask + Ghillie regardless of natural vegetation, most signature is removed and only detectable at very close range unless in extreme temperature environments. A person can go "low tech" by sewing in an emergency reflective blanket into a outdoor tarp covered with vegetation or commercial camouflage on the cheap. Test with thermal scope. You will be surprised at the results. Be mindful of head. Useful against certain predators, but an individual must neutralize human scent.

Attaching a few fist-sized blocks of styrofoam (1" or 2" thick) to the inside of the suit will hold the fabric up off the body. Even if just one or two pieces over the upper back area, they would keep the fabric from warming up as much and give a more mottled appearance on the thermals across your back. And all without adding weight to the suit itself. Plus you'd get some extra air movement between you and the fabric, which would be nice in the summer heat. Won't make you invisible, but should make it harder to identify you as a human body lying on the ground, which is the whole point really. Best of luck to you. I'd like to see a second video like this, but with you lying on the ground for a few hours and then testing how well the thermal cameras can see you. Give time for your body heat to heat the ground below you and dissipate through the fabric more.
