Hi, German army guy here. For all the people, who are wondering where the difference is, between the Zeltbahn and the Regen Poncho. Well, they both do the same, both can used as ponchos and as tarps to build a shelter. The difference is, that the Zeltbahn is issued to every soldier, alongside stakes and poles to build a shelter out of it and the Regen Poncho USED to be standard issue but now you can only aquire it commercially and does not come with any shelter-building things likes stakes and poles. Another difference is the material. The Zeltbahn is made out of a heavy canvas-like material, which soaks up water and is overall very heavy in weight, however its still waterproof, which means it'll keep you dry. But its recommended to impregnate it, to keep it from soaking up water. Whereas the Regen Poncho is lighter, actually waterproof, as its made out of a heavily rubberized material and doesent need to be maintained by impregnated unlike the Zeltbahn. So many soldiers prefer to use the Regen Poncho.

@@BushcraftBuddy Not really . The only reason why it existet was cheap ABC Protektion before the Overgarment in the Mid 90´s. After than you had your Full Goretex for Rain Protection and the Overgarment as Main ABC Protection both even with reduced IR Signature on Paper and more flexibility for the Movement of the User. The only reason why it works for a while with the BW Poncho is all the Plastics outside. But wait for an hour and you have Glow in the Dark and the same with the Zeltbahn. @Feldscher10398 ай бұрын
@@mariokuppers5686The Overgarment is bulky and specialised, meaning it has only one use and is neither sufficiently available nor practical to carry. The Poncho can be carried with your normal gear, it will protect you against rain and warm you a bit ( I used to put my Esbit cooker down to make some coffee/ soup and squat over it with the poncho to get a bit warm during Evasion/ Landnav exercises in best Recce-Weather). You can also just wrap yourself in it in case your sleeping gear "got lost, what a shame"). You can throw it on over all equipment carried during a downpour without the need to get out of your gear first, you can ventilate way better under it than your full goretex suit, you can use it as shelter, you can carry people in it, you can use it to transport and get rid of excavated soil while preparing your B-Stand, you can throw it over your groups 3rd-line im Nahversteck and so on and so forth. If in doubt I'd highly recommend having a multi-purpose item for fieldcraft rather than multiple specialised tools that take up space and weight.

German Flecktarn is designed for pretty much all of Europes forests. It is very easy to enhance the camo capabilities with some natural blending materials like bushes moss and dead branches. I'm thinking about testing out a two layer shelter with the Bundeswehr Poncho and the Flecktarn tarp. The poncho being the inner layer, to get some more light absorption.

Gotta admit i was a bit surprised as to the performance of the M90 myself. Seeing how I know how well it works. It looks a shade or three brighter than M90 surplus ive had myself. I honestly think the surface finish of the ale-tex material is more to blame than the pattern itself (slightly reflective instead of the dull-matte of some of the well performing camo). Mind you that this specific piece of kit is not used by the Swedish military, so i suppose you cant really make significant conclusions from it. :)

My guess would be that if you put the reflective blanket under the tent then you'll have a very strong protection against detection from IR as well as Night Vision and just visually
@Beneficiis Жыл бұрын
I think best would be just dual layer - have waterproof / camo and reflective blanket under it, preferrably with some spacing between them. So that outside layer can simply adapt to ambient temperature while reflective layer is not exposed. Because I do think if you stayed in shelter for extended time - you would see thermal signature in all of them. Especially in high contrast environments (winter). So one tarp/poncho and under that space blankets at least 10 cm away from poncho/tarp.

First off really cool reviews man! Looks like it's impossible to hide from both thermal and night vision at the same time. Unfortunately these tarps all reflect in night vision devices like crazy. Only natural fibers absorb it. You need a nylon or polyester (poncho) inside and on the outside have a thick cotton canvass to absorb the infra red detected by night vision. Nylons and polyester might as well be UCP during daytime it's that's bad. But even then you could only put it on when being observed because it would eventually warm up if worn close to the body.

So if you dont touch and conduct heat into the cover material you wont show through. If its insulated enough that your body heat radiating wont warm it through.

I think that a mixture of gillie suit and ghosthoodie elements, because worn directly on the body, also gives very good results. Digging a sleeping hollow or just taking advantage of natural cover probably remains the best protection against detection and of course weapon effect. 🇩🇪 (Original) Was auffällt, dass keine zwei- oder gar mehrlagige Textilien verwendet wurden, was bei gleichem Gewicht und Raummaßen immer zu besseren Ergebnissen führen dürfte. Ideally you wouldn’t be out in the open if trying to camouflage against visible light detection, but rather behind and in the midst of natural concealment. This both blends the color(s) of your poncho/tarp with multiple colors of vegetation and breaks up the straight lines. With image intensification night vision, plain green is as close to invisible as you can get. Back in the 90s most of our equipment was painted the 3-color NATO pattern but some was all green, and the only way you could see those through PVS-7s was by the tires or rubber on the road wheels that stuck out like crazy. Same for the black areas in the 3-color NATO pattern. Windows/lights/reflectors, too - cover these and tires with camo net bags, tarps, sandbags, or mud. Take light discipline very seriously, even the glow plug light on a humvee is bright like a 100W bulb through NVGs. Tape over or remove lamps that can’t be turned off. Track crews, put your periscope covers on because even with the curtain between the driver’s compartment and work area in an M577 the master power light on the driver’s left shines like a lighthouse in NVGs. You know what gave away the platoon CP more than anything else? The head of the OE-254 antenna silhouetted against the sky. Cut small leafy branches to secure to it and set it up as close as possible to trees about the same height.

building a two layered shelter is usually the best way to camouflage yourself from thermal. An insulating layer of moss between two layers of tarp (maybe even with moss on top for longer encampments) and a thermally insulating sleeping bag do quite well against thermal imaging. Best way to fool thermal imaging is to have thick foliage/plant cover around your campsite though, as that'll add another layer of protection.

The reflective blanket is a rescue blanket for emergencies and not for use as camouflage material. It is not ment to build a tent out of it but to insulate a person directly like a blanket.
@billtussenius4365 Жыл бұрын
Well from my experience it is also used for the exact reason as demonstrated in this video. He sadly only showcased its green reflective side, there is also the opposite side which is highly noticeable with not only thermal imaging, but also night vision, great for communicating a Heli landing site for instance ...

The UK camouflage you have here was replaced almost 10 years ago, that's the old CBT 95 pattern and was replaced by Multicam which the Americans also use.

The best effect can be seen in the photo from afar at 4:08, where the camouflages are placed between the trees. I must say that for my understanding of this topic, Germany and Serbia have the best camouflage. As for the flashlight tests and everything as a whole, the German one is the best, although the Serbian camouflage is slightly better, but it has a minus in the flashlight test.

Maybe this has already been written here in the comments and ive seen some comments talking a bit of what I know aswell. The Swedish M90 cant be bought, and none of the copys have the same heat (IR) protection. Furthermore the M90 comes in 3 different summer colorschemes. One is more to the beige side, for more dry land, one pretty dark for the type of forrest you are in! Aswell as one pretty light colourscheme, which blends in more into birch forests, which i am thinking that your M90 is closest to! Otherwise nice video!

Vielen Dank für das Video. Lakonisches, informatives, großes Angebot an getesteten Umhängen.

I must say, Flecktarn is much better than I thought. (For this environment). It has the advantage to have a larger tiling in the pattern for larger surfaces.
@maxsluiman9142 Жыл бұрын
That supposedly UK pattern here, is actually Dutch. UK DPM and the old Dutch Woodland pattern are a bit similar, but not the same. DPM has small spots on the edges, which Dutch Woodland lacks.
