I think I found GOAT shortly after it was released when a bunch of guitarists (and bass players like Davie) were trying to cover it as a challenge riff. I decided then and there that I had been slacking entirely too much on guitar for the last decade and was determined to learn it. I got to where I could play it fairly decently and it's still a very challenging riff to play but a fun one! Good on you for stepping outside your comfort zone.

Archspire should do a Polyphia type song once you get the new drummer figured out.. Polyphia was not really the kind of music I like but damn those guys can play and I find myself listening to it just because its so interesting and different than what Im used to. Very fun to learn too since they do things I probably never wouldve stumbled upon myself. The middle part and end in their song 40 oz is what got me hooked starts at about 1:50 in the song and its just rad from there. I think people might get a bit weirded out seeing me an old guy, who looks like youre average early 90s death metal enthusiast blasting their music but its so good. Right up there with Archspire.

These Dean learns videos are really fascinating for me because the dude it ten million times more mechanically skilled than me, but doesn't really (in the nicest way possible don't kill me) excel at learning new stuff, it seems to take a while. Coming from a classical background where sight reading is really drilled into you I can play stuff at the top of my ability range by sight and often think if I can't play something first try then it's probably too hard for me. Watching Dean pick apart riffs, slow them down, learn beats and phrases, stitch it together. It's a part of learning that I'm not really familiar with and it is really interesting.

That very first clip of you messing up is actually what Polyphia sounds like. You don't have to play it the same, just slide back and forth from random low and high notes and just toss around some bends and hammer-ons all willy nilly and there you go. Don't worry about any strong melodies or distinct memorable riffs, just do the guitar version of a cat running around on piano keys.
