You should look into how The Birdcage was filmed -- the director was into shots that required some very precise blocking, but also they'd cast Robin Williams, and you wanna give that man room to work, especially when it became obvious he and Nathan Lane bounced off each other beautifully. So they did *six weeks* of rehearsal, absolutely insane for that kind of movie. By the end a bunch of "improv" was now in the script, and just as importantly, everybody knew how the shots were gonna work and how any new improv they did was going to need to fit in. It's the reason the (somewhat) famous soup-slip scene worked: Robin Williams knew if he kept in-character and played into it, the take would still work. It's neat stuff.
