Thanks Ben! It was a challenging project! The whittling knife I made from an old file is a good first project. The blade is small enough that you don't really need a forge - you can heat the blade with a propane torch.

It is a great knife. It was a lot of work, but I think it was a labor of love for you. Maybe you could cut the back end off a spent 357 magnum cartridge, drill out a pocket in one scale and epoxy it in. Kind of like the diston and sons medalions on hand saws. What do you think?

@@357magdad That is weird. I thought I watched all your old videos a long time ago. Maybe I fell asleep watching in bed and did not realize several played automatically. Now I know if I watched them because they will already have a thumbs up. I will go back thru them to see if there are anymore without the thumbs up. If so I must have missed them. My bad. Anywho I see you put one on each side of that peasants knife. You really only need one. There are not two on the old saws. But anyway both knives came out great! I am back in PA for my fifteenth wedding anniversary. We are heading back to Ohio tomorrow, but before we go, I am going to Hamilton Tools in Beaver Falls. It was mentioned on an episode of Mr. Pete. I grew up in Beaver Falls and used to go there as a young man. It has probably been 15 years since I was there! I am hoping to find some goodies since all the tractor shows in my area were canceled. I would love to find a small lathe. Wish me luck!

Well done. Looks very good. I agree that custom knife makers have a lot of skills and knowledge to create their quality knives. If you want to make a knife with HSS, I have several 7 1/2in dia x 0.090in thick HSS circular saw discs which were scrapped and too dull for saw use, but can be cut up to make knife blanks or other tools. You will not be able to drill holes so the scales would need to be epoxied to the blank. Let me know if interested. Happy to send a blade on for future project(s). Dave.

I've always wanted to make a knife... After watching you use actual math to design your blade, I feel my efforts to make my blade were pretty crude. I drew a picture of my blade on a car spring and ground away everything that wasn’t part of the blade with a 7 inch angle grinder. I heat treated with a welding torch and quenched in used motor oil. I used elk horn for the handle. It must weigh 4 or 5 pound. I don’t carry it, but it’s proudly displayed on the wall. Thanks magdad.

I've been chasing that giant mouse fixed blade for a number of years. They are not really doing business correctly I think it's shitty business practices to make like 20 knives and make a statement on IG at 3am then they are gone in 2 minutes to weirdos lurking in the site and buy them all and the average person never sees they were even made. I'm pretty much over it. But that's not exclusive to giant mouse. Alot of makers do that with knives called mid-tech meaning factory custom. Sorry for the rant but that's something ide learned about pretty recently and I think it's a excessively tribal business practice.
@357magdad4 жыл бұрын
I had never heard of the company before. I don't run into many custom knives in the dollar bin at the flea market! LOL
