I love that optimism though. He's constantly looking ahead with his approach to music, even if it is a little naive. Sure, the tuning is really unorthodox (my guitar couldn't hack it) but Fripp's idiosyncrasies made him so far ahead of his time and he needed his assured, slightly smug attitude to achieve that! I'm sure you agree though, I just like to imagine he was totally convinced it'd catch on one day :~)

I guess that could work for some things, but all my inspiration comes to me in standard bass tuning. Everything I hear in my head just happens to be playable in all fourths tuning. All of it would be difficult or impossible to play in all fifths, all thirds, standard guitar tuning, whatever. This tuning would also be hell on my arthritis. However, something interesting is that I don't hear 440 tuning in my head; everything is in 430 tuning (classical pitch). It took decades for me to finally figure out that it was the reason the tones I was hearing in my head never quite fit anywhere; they were always somewhere in the middle between any two semitones on my neck. For that reason, I only tune to 430 now. Funny thing, when I sing without a reference, it's also roughly in 430 tuning.

Fitting string gauges for NST: .008 .010 .015 .026w .038w .056w Adding a .008 to a regular 7-string set (typically .010 .013 .017 .026 .036 .046 .056) is an easy option but the .017 will be very taut on a Fender scale. Better on a Gibson scale. Or just start with a 10 at E4 and go down all in fifth to F1. It's no longer NST but it covers the range of an 8-string guitar with six.

Try an 8 string in NEW STANDARD TUNING. Trust me also use an 08 or 07 on the E if you can especially for electric when tuning up to G maybe even higher(A for Guitar Craft Standard Tuning) but with 2 additional strings! Do some personal math in customizing what string gauge you would need per correct tension for strings to feel normal enough and not too tight for guitar and to touch. You'll have to try this some time! 8 string Combinations: C-G-C-G-D-A-E-G(Double New Standard Tuning); C(Bb*)-G(F*)-C-G-D-A-E-A( Guitar Craft Standard Tuning for 8 string Double and Variant 2*); This one is a bit of a challenge and is not really NWS but just as fun Bb-F-C-G-D-A-E-B(All 5ths Tuning) Sounds nice with the many harmonies you can get out of the dyads alone!
