Mirror rot?

If the flux gets in between the glass & mirror backing it will oxidize/rot
@mariahham89613 ай бұрын
@@AmayaJade one more question, what is flux?
@bertiesgirl13 ай бұрын
@mariahham8961 Flux is what makes the solder flow and stick, the surfaces need to be clean and you paint on the flux then solder over it. I use it in jewellery making and I put my little pieces of solder in the flux but this uses a solder pen like tool and the solder is in lengths and not tiny pieces
@mustafa20623 ай бұрын
One more question.. what is solder?
@lillyhill60933 ай бұрын
Soldering is a way of attaching things together by a melting metal using a soldering pen (a stick that can reach high temperatures at its tip) on top the things you are attaching, such as wires to a circuit board like in most electronics. The way in which she uses soldering, is to melt her metal of choice into lines between her pieces of stained glass, to fix the design in place. Please watch her other videos for other information on her process.

Mirror rot is when you see black spots or other areas loose their mirror effect. This is caused by damage to the backing (the backing is what makes it a mirror, without the backing it's just glass.

Traditionally, a mirror was glass with a silver backing. Silver tarnishes (when a precious metal rusts, it's called tarnishing) and so mirror rot was when the sealing of silver and glass was not air/water tight so the silver would tarnish and turn black at the edges. And it's patchy in a way that almost looks like mold, hence the name "mirror rot" If you break one of those types of mirrors, it could break the seal between silver and glass which causes mirror rot. That's what she was worried about it the video. I really doubt they use silver in those mirrors, but perhaps it's still some type of backing that tarnishes so it's a concern.

cutting glass purposefully is different than say a glass bowl breaking. when purposefully breaking glass it comes off evenly in big chunks where as a bowl falling a breaking will cause rough ragged shards of glass. glass is misconcepted as being sharp because many people dont cut it purposefully

no reason for anxiety to get high! most people dont know but cutting glass purposefully is a lot more safe then people think. when cutting glass purposefully it snaps of smoothly in chunks where as if you drop a glass cup or something of that nature the shards that the cup breaks into will be ragged and uneven making it sharp. although eyeglass is recommended!

Tf is mirror rot? Is that why my mirror have those black stains?
@taylorg2320Ай бұрын
Yes it is! Mirrors have layers of metal in them, that's what makes them reflective :) Glass on its own is just transparent! When moisture gets trapped in between the layers of glass and metal, the metal starts to oxidize. That's why antique mirrors were made with silver, and bathroom grade mirrors are more expensive than regular mirrors (they use humidity safe metals instead of cheap metal.) The silver in mirrors was also why they used to say that vampires couldn't see themselves in mirrors lol

I don't know what you are using as adhesive but if you haven't tried it already I would recommend rubber cement. It comes off really easy. We use it when we are patterning and cutting metal for jewelry. It isn't the most permentant bond but that's why it comes off so easy. You just have to give it a little rub. Though I haven't tried it on glass, so it could be different. But it's worth a try.

So while I agree that cutting mirrors causing bad luck is silly, a mirror isn't technically just glass! A mirror is glass combined with metal, the metal is what makes it reflective. Did you have to buy them individually? I got like a pack of 10 12x12 mirrors on homedepots website i believe. I was going to use then to cut mirrors for makeup pallets i bought on ebay that didn't come with mirrors but were like 5x cheaper because of it. I never got to doing it though because i ruined the first mirror and just didn't have the proper equipment to do it cleanly. I think i ended up paying a professional to cut rectangles for me who charged appx only $2.00 per 12x12 square since it was bulk so it came out to be like $20.00 for appx 40-60-ish cut mirrors. Now, after seeing this, I feel bad that they seemed to charge me under what they should have but maybe it's because i supplied them with the glass? They did it within 1 hour or less. My cut mirrors were not intricate that this though.
