I successfully learned all 197 countries and plan to learn more Geography trivia. On this channel I also play Geoguessr. This is a game that uses Google Street View to drop you in a random location and you have to work out exactly where you are on the worldwide map. Geoguessr was created in 2013. even if "shire" is like 20% of each word, on average the English counties are way longer names than the American ones, which means they're harder to remember remember and they're harder to turn into fun songs to memorize with

Most of them have gone through a few different languages which also makes them hard to remember. A lot were named before modern and even old English being Saxon and some before the Anglo Saxon invasion

Quick thing about Bristol, the City of Bristol has historically been an area between Somerset and Gloucestershire, meaning that the southern half was in Somerset and the northern half was in Gloucestershire. At one point, there was an Avon county, named after the river, which encompassed what is now Bristol City, Bath & N.E Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, though that no longer exists. Despite this, even if you live in Bristol, some websites which are a bit older will assume your county is Avon. Now though, Bristol is its own city and county 👍

I just tried both and got every US states correct in almost 2:28mins even tho I am not American. Completely struggled at the UK counties, I had 11/48💀

I think the reason UK counties are so much harder to memorise compared to US states is because during our school years, us UK kids aren't made to really learn them. Plus unlike US states, laws don't change from county to county; sure the colours of your bins may change but overall, everything is mostly uniform across the UK so we don't have a need to know. It may also be a little bit of a pride thing to show off to US folk that we know their country so well and to see them struggle when they do the same thing to Europe
