Miss Nancy's Day Off

Miss Nancy's Day Off

29 күн бұрын

Hey guys, in today’s videos I am doing a test run in my Skoda Yeti to see if it really will be possible to run a jewellery business from it if I move into my car. It’s obviously not a very big car and I have quite a lot of tools so it is a bit of a challenge! I really need to see if it’s actually possible before driving off into the sunset, hopefully this video will give you some ideas about just what it is possible to do in a car in case you are thinking of doing a similar thing!
Thanks for watching ❤️
A little about us: I adopted my ex-racing greyhound Miss Nancy three years ago, it was a massive learning curve for both of us and we have become the best of friends, who love going on outdoor adventures, wild swims, van camping and finding vegan food out and about! We make videos showing what it’s like to have a greyhound as a pet, the beautiful outdoors, vanlife, and life with a greyhound!
When we aren’t making videos I am a jeweller and illustrator, you can check out my work here: www.victoriagracesilversmith.com

Hi Tori, lost my bestie in 2017, and still think of him all the time. Its part of loving someone or something, and it shows how good a doggy mum, and what a life you gave her. My friend brought me his new cockapoo last week and we were both nearly in tears about our former dogs, and yet in love with his new puppy. Regarding the vehicle/ work thing...... to me it would be easier to work under the tailgate at a little table and chairs, perhaps with an awning for rainy days (google magnetic windscreen shields for ideas how you could make it work). This saves you working on your bedding, saves your pedal issue, and allows you to hang up the motor too, and a bit safer than using a blowtorch next to bedding. I think you can get solar attachments for the power bank too - so it becomes less costly. If you are still looking for adventures, I can recommend the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and the Northumberland coast, as well as the west coast and islands of Scotland. I also believe the Wild Atlantic Way is stunning too.
@missnancysdayoff

I’m so sorry you lost your best pal too. it’s strange how you can think about them all the time and it’s so nice to be thinking about them but them sometimes it just totally breaks you again and the tears flow. if i am doing a different kind of work (and I do a few things) that is a really good idea, with my jewellery it’s just not possible to be outside because the wind blows my stuff away! I’d much refer to if I could though. thank you I am always looking for suggestions and those are right up my alley 🙏

I fink this is my favourite video yet, I feel like this was made just for me! 😆- “this is utter madness, I’ve literally no idea what I was thinking when I thought this was a good idea!” That hit me me right in the feels as I’m in my saxo, in the rain, thinking how naive I am to have thought that the weather in Orkney was going to be favourable; living in and out of a car has its challenges! Love the vibe and I’m all for the curiosity you have that takes you to these places, never lose it. 😎

The worst part for me was the time where I was considering whether or not to drop my summer plans or just push on and, like you said, try! Your last yeti video gave me the inspiration and I’m here, working, in the car and I love it. Most of the time 😆 I feel like there’s synergy with your channel and more so with this one because I could identify with everything - leisure batteries, plastic containers, camping stove inconvenience, rain, dirt, space… the list goes on 🥴 ❤

Brilliant Tori👏👏 I love how you keep in your camera fall and things like that in. That's what makes you different to all the other big channels. Never change❤ I think it's a great idea for the summer months, cheap to travel. A roof box would be good, they are huge or a text box. A company might give you one free if you plug it. Fun video again. The Miss Nancy pendant is beautiful👋❤️

the pendant is lovely. so very sweet. and the vulnerable moment was just... well, i had to take a moment to go into the kitchen and cut some onions - no sense in wasting good tears. as for the practicality of doing this long term? well, it's a good thing that you were a contortionist in the circus in your youth! i had a thought: what about a top carrier (or a trailer hitch cargo carrier) to hold a small workshop-sized popup tent and whatever you need in the way of workshop gear? when you're ready to work, set up the tent next to the car and do your work inside. pack it up when you're done and stow it away. this will allow you to have a separate 'office/workshop' and leave the inside of your yeti as your 'home' space. no more shaking dirt out of your bed. setup and teardown would take a little more time but the tradeoff might be worth it. as always, it's awfully nice to have a video from you show up in my feed. i admire your determination.

thank you I’m glad you like it I haven’t taken it off yet. Ahh tears in cooking always makes it taste better. long term? honestly i think it would drive me bananas. it went well but I’ve had to make a lot of sacrifices what tools i could take so i am limited in what i can make, and honestly it’s not comfortable enough to work at it all day like that. but it’s fantastic to be able to do what I need to in there! maybe that’s possible, i guess where Ia m stopping to work all comes into it. if i went to a campsite that would be great and I’d find it more relaxing, if there are people coming by in a public place i don’t think id want to put a tent up! ☺️

good advice in comments. I shall add that am not happy laying your electric motor on a blanket. 1) It looks not to be an inexpensive item. 2) The casing seems to have cooling fins and air vents and there's probably an fan impeller that sucks air inside and outside the casing.. Almost any reduction of this facility may cause rapid heating that could burn out your motor/something touching it. Make a way to suspend it as it should be - an S hook on the handle thing above the door ?????? Cool workshop

A couple of thoughts for you - what about a roof box and have you seen these "hatchback awnings". All the best, Andy

I look forward to seeing how it goes. Hatchback awnings can be quite a reasonable cost. If storage proves to be a problem I have an old Halfords top box that you are welcome to have. I don't use it anymore and it is taking up space. You will need roof bars for it though. Keep the lovely smiling faces and sense of humour coming. Andy

Another great video Tori. 👏 Like yourself I have been fascinated with the idea of living in a vehicle for some years. In fact a while ago it was pressed upon me due to being homeless. At that time I had little chance to prepare so since then I've always thought just in case and have planned what I would do in meticulous detail if that situation arose again. A couple of dear friends of mine spent a good chunk of last year living in a small van and whilst doing that they came across a box with three abandoned guinea pigs 🐷 in it, naturally they adopted them so there were two adults and three guinea pigs in a small van. It is amazing what you can do when you need to as you said 'where there is a will, there is a way'. I enjoyed the way you use your ingenuity to overcome problems. I would say is try to flip the negative conversation you can have with yourself so instead of using words like 'silly idea' suggesting failure view it as feedback. Like yourself I'm an inventive sort, always have been, I never see a fail as a fail it's always feedback It just gives me additional information so I can a modify my approach until it succeeds, you may iterate the process several times but ultimate the you find a successful approach. And you have demonstrated that marvellously, yes there are some kinks to iron out but you'll crack it. I think we live in very different times so don't be surprised how society has changed we are far more mobile now then we were in the recent past. Yes decades ago it would have been frowned upon to live out of the vehicle but given that people don't want to be slaves to a mortgage doing decades of mindless work and unhappy, they are looking for alternatives. So the girl that said to you that it was a great idea you have probably inspired her to do something different and that desire was probably within her for a long time but you validated it for her just by doing what you're doing. And the young lads, I'm hardly surprised that they would be interested in doing something like that. Given that a young person now can expect to change their job a minimum of 10 times in their working life, and they will in all likelihood never own a property, plus they want time to do a fun stuff such as travel and seeing the world of course they would love to run a business out of the back of a vehicle and experience the freedom that goes with that. So more power to your elbow Tori you're doing great things, you're inspiring people, and you are making Miss Nancy proud! 🐶💖🤗

thank you 🙏 definitely not good to be forced into doing stuff like this, I bet you have a far better plan than me now then! I wonder if I will find a box of guinea pigs. If i am honest, part of me wants to find a dog abandoned somewhere and take them in. not that I want them to be abandoned of course, you understand what I mean. i’m going to keep an eye out for boxes 😂 your right, there isn’t really failure and I do feel like I have failed at some things, perhaps mainly when i think I have not tried hard enough at something. it all experience though, and trying to something the deciding you don’t like it is surely a good thing as you say, it’s all learning wat yo. do and don’t want. yes the idea of freedom, the more I have chased it the more confusing a concept I actually think it is. but it can sure look like people who are travelling ore have more freedom. but not the freedom to have a hot shower on demand or wash their clothes 😅 it’s all an experience! I am certain that my beautiful Nancy thought I was quite mad, and still does if she is watching me 🤗🐾❤️

Well done - loving your life philosophy. Can you do it? Yes, you can do - whatever you decide, you can do it. I would inclined to consider having a roll up camp table and simply sit on the back of the car as long as it’s not too windy / rainy? Spread out an old bed sheet when working inside the car so it’s easy to shake out and to wash. Kettles, I have a 12v kettle for when I’m driving and a 650watt / 230v travel kettle. Both make I decent mug full. Water to wash your paws - get a solar shower with a tap and a hose so when using it doesn’t drip inside the car - or place it on the car roof.

You can get an inverter that runs off your car battery, they provide 240 volts and most also have a phone /laptop charger built in. I have 2 in my van a 180 watt one which is ideal for tool batteries and small items and a 6kilowatt one for heavy duty jobs in building work. I have a split charging system fitted and 2 batteries so I don't end up with the vehicle battery going flat. You can also get 12 volt electric kettles but again you would have to have the engine runnning to use it.. My van came with a hot water heater and a sink that folds up which is handy for washing grubby hands.I also carry an airbed and portable toilet for weekends away. Maybe a van woulld suit you better if you want to work and live in it, I have a high top Transit but it is not much longer than an estate car.

Hey you 🙂 xx I hope you had a fab weekend Tori? I've been painting the toilet of the house i've just bought, oh! and my washing........Living the dream huh? lol Well, what can i say? You certainly like a challenge babe, that's for sure. I don't know who else would try to pack a Skoda Yeti with the contents of a small 3 bedroom house except you........AND you pulled it off 😃. Mind you, how you sleep with all that under your mattress is a mystery hahaha 😅 Maybe get a roof box, "Thule" make some quality ones. It'll be ideal for storing your clothes, toiletries, food etc. Please please DON'T put you work tools and equipment in it though sweetheart, if its broken into, or anything happens to it, that's your livelihood gone. To be honest, if i can make a suggestion, without putting a dampener on things.........perhaps only take your work tools etc out in your car for a day or two at a time? Again, if, god forbid your car gets stolen or broken into if you're away from it for any length of time, its all gone babe! I hate being a doom and gloom merchant, but i was a prison officer for 25yrs and i just know there are lots of people out there just looking for any opportunity to steal your things........(i do a much more civilised and rewarding job now though lol 😅). Anyway, back to the vid........I was glad i didn't see that wretched filter bottle in this one! Did you forget it? I'm sure there was some fetid swamp water around, just crying out to be filtered!! 😵‍💫🙂. I love the jewellery you make Tori, even in the back of your car it looks amazing, so delicate!! I imagine producing these videos takes up a fair amount of your time, what with the filming, editing etc. Along with making jewellery, you must be keeping pretty busy, which is a good thing sweetheart, helps take your mind of the rubbish things in life huh?.........oh! and i loved the music you used in this one too, is it the type of music you like to listen to? Yeah, maybe postpone investing in anything like a roof box for now then if you're only going to go on short outings. Its difficult giving up the security and creature comforts of home for too long......its nice to get away, but its also nice to get home again when your mind tells you you've had enough of the outside world for now 🙂. I know you're sensible and would have already thought about the implications of carrying your stuff in your car. I had to say something about it though, just in case. It would break my heart if anything happened to it............and i know it would utterly devastate you babe, and that would be unbearable for me xx Hahahaha.......Go on then, make an episode which includes actually filtering water in that contraption and make a cuppa. Get it out of your system Tori, i know you want to.............but don't come crying to me if you're s**ting through the eye of a needle for a week afterwards 😃😃. I'll just be sitting with a "told you so" smile on my face hahaha .............seriously though sweetheart, if you're going to do it, please start off with water which you can actually see through if you squint long enough, rather than go straight for the stuff glowing yellow with Plutonium 204 !!!.......Jokes aside, i REALLY don't want you getting ill, so small steps huh? How about a smaller van, something where you could actually sit properly - sitting like you were in this video will hurt and possibly do some serious damage.. I think the portable workshop idea is good though, making the plank into more of a box, possibly with a hinged lid, would allow you to fold up and put away very quickly, and also set up very quickly. Good morning 🌅, that great day, at work, if you are careful, you can make a hanging bracket to hook on the back edge of your vehicle so you can attach your Dremel machine to it, I know there is a device that has got the clamp on it that allows you to hang it off a hook at the top, I have seen people put an extension on the back. Are there vehicle to make a camping area?, That you could obviously use as a workshop., need to be very careful with fumes from when you’re doing soldering or chemicals who are using, obviously I do not know your circumstances, but I have been to offence years ago, where people have a workshop, a caravan to work in, with a horning on the side as a display place to show your Products you make, the countryside looks nice, though it looks a bit windy, do you do craft fairs?, Or have you thought about doing it?, I have done them years ago where I’ve used my van to sell things that I’ve made, and I have done renovation projects where I have worked in my van and slept in my van as well. You just have to make sure that way you sleep as well covered up., And obviously there are vans and there are vans, I have a long wheelbase sprinter, excellent for doing work if it’s raining and obviously sleeping as well, in the region where I live in France there are people called artisan, they make anything from Woodturning to pottery sewing jewellery et cetera, When I first started working for myself , I had a very small workshop, I would buy secondhand furniture from auction houses and restore them and then put them back into auction and make some money sometimes, I ended up getting commission work to make furniture, et cetera, I ended up doing specialist joinery work for restoring Barnes conversions, and renovation projects, , et cetera, It might be worth buying secondhand jewellery, and taking it apart and remaking it into something new and modern, or even creating pieces of art, I wish you all the success for the future , Keep up the great work and stay positive, I would say that you could have my caravan which is in my garden, but you will need a very large truck to pull it, France,

Sculpture., Et cetera, I don’t know why, but there seems to be a lot of females over in the US and Canada , that are into Woodcraft, and Woodturning which another thing that is very interesting as well, but that will cost a lot of money to set up, there is one thing I should say that if you do a craft fair with jewellery, you must make sure that it’s behind a cabinet or out of reach so people cannot pinch or thief, something else that might be of some help or interest, is contacting some of the colleges and schools in your area, they might do evening classes where they will teach you turning woodcraft et cetera and even furniture restoration, Are used to teach in the evenings at a college near where I used to live for about six or seven years, teaching furniture restoration, I had a wide group of students, from an 18 year-old to 82-year-old, It was very interesting and good fun. Had a good banter with a lot of students , got to a point where people’s birthdays were bringing cakes and have a celebration, over the years I have restored a lot of furniture some very very valuable, I have made furniture for two universities in Cambridge, and I have worked as a contract worker at a organ building company, As they were short on a specialist machine operator, I even still have a lot of my machines and tools, I am a present trying to restore an old mill, which I’ve turned into a dwelling , so it still needs a lot of work to it , it’s got the main essentials like bathrooms, kitchens and dining rooms and lounge , and a huge garden with a stream/river , and I’m in the process of building a workshop/garage, I wish you all success for the future, if I can help in any other way, I will try, stay safe, look 👀 forward to your next project on KZbin, France.

Can the motor thingy,(tech term there😂) not be hung on the handle behind your head on bungee?

well maybe, it’s really heavy though I’m not sure if it will break the handle! 😂

Hello Tori again😅, Your motor needs to be hung up - I notice you have roof handles either side of the INSIDE of vehicle...how about getting bungee cable with the hooks either end and hook the ends on the roof handles across the car threaded through the motor handle? Also Asda are selling a ground sheet that self inflates at around £15 which with the bedding you already have may make it more comfy? 😮Take Care
@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff 25 күн бұрын
hey! i agree it does, and I did consider the hooks but the motor is pretty heavy and i was slightly concerned it would rip them right out. maybe i should just try it 🫣 self inflating groundsheet sounds interesting thanks! ☺️

@@missnancysdayoff Good point, did not realise it was that heavy😊Another alternative would be to hang it from the back door metal hinge, but that of course would only be when the weather was okay! Problems problems 🫣🤔

Hi Tori, guess its okay as a sort of adventure for maybe a few days while away, but you really are so limited for space in a car. Your camper van was good tho, you had everything there you needed, and cooking facilities, washing etc etc. You take care, blessings.

Have you thought about getting a roof box ? it would free up loads of space, and what about privacy ? its a bit like sleeping in a green house with all those windows,. I'm guessing the van seems a little empty without the company of nancy drew ? security would be better in the van to, anyway stay safe and be vigilant out there, your videos are a breath of fresh air,.

I think if I end up liking being in the car a roof box is a good plan. Definitely be putting up blackout blinds in all the windows for privacy when sleeping trying to be as stealth as possible, it did feel like everyone was looking when I was working. You’re right the van doesn’t feel right without my Nancy Drew. Do you really think vans are safer? Thank you I’m glad you like the vids 😊

@@missnancysdayoff Standing up is a big plus with the van and your across the van bed looks cosy, side door is a big bonus to, i had a little road trip to france and belgium and decided to sleep in the car, ive got a ford mondeo hatch back with those black tinted rear windows (can see out but not in) maybe thats an idea for the yetti ?, small fold up mattress in back with seats folded down, it was brilliant, saved me a couple of hundred quid on hotels, on the yetti get the rear dark tinted and a lighter (legal tint) on the front side windows, just need one of those silver front widow blinds on screen, good window tinting would be £200+ not cheap but better than faffing with blinds,. secure safe parking with some pepper spray (allegedly) illegal, so use a can of deep heat instead, .its good to have toilets and washing facilities near by to, you seem well sorted so no probs, cheers ,.

Hi Tori .Are you still interested in the canal boat life. If so I can give you some advice. Boats come in all sizes from 40ft to 60 ftand prices from cheap small second hand to expensive brand new. Licence fees vary with length and use.there are 3 types of licence . First leasure use holidays weekend etc. Second live aboard which is self explanatory and third continuous cruising which should suit you It is fully legal unlike van living. All facilities include hot and cold running water heating shower and toilet as well as cooking facilities and insulation for winter living . Number of beds depends on length with plenty of room to use as a business. A friend of mine buys old second hand boats renovates them and sells on . He has one up for sale now if you would like to call and see. .Let me know if this appeals to you

hello, I am interested yes thank you. interesting about the different licenses too, and with the cruising one you don’t have to move everyday i think? I’d want a small one that was easy to fit places 😅 that sounds interesting thank you, is he up in Manchester near you?

💜So, please, do tell why you are not doing it in your van. Marina at www.youtube.com/@WildSheGoes lived on the road for several years in a small Citroen Berlingo with her labrador dog and ran an Etsy jewellery making business on the road.
