Both can be excellent story telling games, there are some parts of CDDA that can be boring and monotonous, Lime could literally survive forever at this farm by clearing the immediate area of threats and nothing will migrate in. Cows produce an insane amount of milk last I heard. But the main fun of the game is exploration with base building being a kind of wind-down reward after the loot run. xD

@@filidhdeklend893 That is the nice thing about the open source part, the branches can go in different directions. I've certainly hit those tedium points while playing CDDA, depending on how you play it can really bog down the gameplay. I havn't dove into BN to give a good comparison though. I know when the CDDA branch made welding wires massively required I lost motivation to do big vehicle projects and instead would rather just wander around fighting instead.

It’s not just complex, it expects YOU to make it playable. It doesn’t even have sound by default. The screen is extremely dark and you have to tamper with the graphics engine because the default one doesn’t work. You need to use an unofficial launcher to make things work. The game is also going for realism over fun. On top of all of this, it has next to no documentation. The latest patch is terrible. It’s frustrating to get into, and you should play bright nights, a fork, if you want an actual game.

The key to getting good with CDDA is understanding that it's a game with small numbers, and so every tiny boost matters, a lot. -1 to attack and a speed penalty from the enemy standing in a bush or pit as they fight? That will save your life. Feeling out the turn order, how many moves you get before the zombie swings so you can try to fast-step away. Even something like slightly slower movement for better armor(and thus getting hotter) is an agonizing choice in this game. If you want to play it easier, give yourself more starting stats, and average character is 8 across the board, 10s in all stats will be rather good, 12 average can start looting the moment they handle a cudgel. And don't be afraid to go far, far away from your starting shelter.

I'd love to see a detailed series about this game where Lime dissects how it works. Is it even theoretically possible to survive indefinitely? Like in PZ if you manage a certain level of sustainability you know you could survive as long as you wanted to, but in this game I dunno. How the heck do you even fight constantly spreading fungus? Giant fires? Even a video just explaining some basic strategies would be good!
@Punished_Hap10 ай бұрын
This game goes extremely in-depth. And yes. For the fungus, fire is the best enemy as they're flammable and weak to it. Including that wasp nest, throw a Molotov and you'll see it burn up extremely quickly. And I'll be honest, fire is the answer to almost anything. Hordes of zombies in a town you want to loot? Burn a house down and let them crawl to the sounds of it collapsing. Make sure to smash them so they don't come back after it's all done burning. (the ones that aren't under the rubble!)

Yes, it's possible to survive indefinitely. To be honest, I disagree with Lime about the whole "This is how you died" vibe, CDDA doesn't really go that way, specially in gameplay terms. Fungus can be dealt with with fire but players usually avoid them or use a mod that slows their spread. I really recommend you try to play it, WormGirl and Vormithrax have really good tutorials and if you're not a hardcore roguelike enjoyer, you can debug/spawn anything to make your gameplay less tedious or hard, and you can even cheese permadeath by disabling autosave and alt f4 before you die...

Yeah, that fight against the cunning feral was in a VERY bad position, he has 1 extra tile of reach and you walked onto the cupboards which gave you a big movement point penalty letting that feral hit you a lot for free. They are an enemy type that counters the obstacle strategy so if you don't have enough reach you want to fight them in the open and run 1 tile in to strike, they will avoid bad terrain too. The safe runs can be quite slow as you spend a lot of time crafting, fight 1-2 zombies, rest, and craft some more. While challenging for the player I always see some viewers get bored. Combat focused characters that focus mostly on looting everything rather than crafting are a lot more active. My usual combat character start is lumberjack with plenty of strength and combat focused perks. Then I try to start with the Barbaran Monte martial art for lots of armor pen with the axe. Lets me start swinging right at the start and the build doesn't even need a better weapon even when facing tougher enemies except for some like electric and acid ones.

After that, RUN AWAY with running mode on, lead them in a circle, and lead them onto another barrier. You will almost never get hit by any zed that's slower than you and even with a character who is totally uninitiated to combat you can wipe out dozens of them in a day with no issues.

Good luck, the longest I lasted here was 83 in-game days. I survived by focusing on mechanic and lucking out on an almost unbroken RV that had Solar Panels. Had to first convert that into an immobile home, and redirect the charging to just 1 large battery. Got even more lucky and found a beat up solar-powered car and took all the panels from those, even the slightly broken ones as they can still generate energy. Had to then dig underground to create my very own underground freezer. For those who want to try and survive longer: 1) Go to the grocery first to get a chance of getting a grocery cart. Looting becomes easy with that. 2) Eat perishables first. 3) Don't drink fruit juices or eat fruits or pumpkin. If you can keep them long enough without spoiling, do so because they will be your source of vinegar for pickling and preserving things. Vinegar and jars are your best friend. 4) Alternatively, if you found the recipe for it, make dehydrated meat/fish/eggs/fruits/vegetables. They increase your stockpile on food. 5) Never kill animals that you can tame. Having two of opposite gender animals (just same animals of no gender) of the same kind beside each has a chance to cause breeding. Having a pet carrier and short rope makes this easier. (Pet carrier for catching wilds, and short rope for tying up tamed) 6) If you want to dabble into breeding, always do this in an enclosed space. Baby animals newly born have a tendency to flee as they are considered "wild". To tame animals, use cat food/dog food/ bird feed/fooder. Either found in pet stores or barns, alongside pet carriers. 7) Trapping an eyebot in an area where only one side is viewable(via glass) and allowing yourself to get photographed will spawn a robot. This is a good unlimited source generator for steel and other mechanical parts. Only do this if you have rubber gear on you or if you have a gun and have decent shooting. 8) Easy mode is mutating into a Rat Man, as this allows you to consume zombie meat. 9) If the basement's size doesn't fit the house size, 80% of the time, it means there is a hidden room. 10) If you want a good source of stone and other building materials as well as killing as large amount of zombies, choose a house you wish to burn down, clear out a building that is in front of that house (preferably separated by a road) Proceed to burn down the target building and just hang around the building you cleared out earlier. The noise will alert zombies to the burning building and the aftermat will yield hundreds for debri, stone, and other building materials; as well as lots of zombie corpses that you still need to smash.
