****Correction*** The excess flow valve is located on the cap that connects to the service valve. Typically green, black, or red. Not the service valve. I misspoke and I am correcting it. Todd Henson

When I first bought my rig I drove with the propane on for the fridge figuring since it wasn't illegal it was safe. You did a good job early on scaring me out of that habit. Now I make sure the fridge is cold before leaving and run the generator every 2 hours or so to keep it cold.

I bought 2 Gas Stops for my TT. It gave me peace of mind when we were forced to travel from Yellowstone to Jackson with refrigerator on. There was no ice to be had in Yellowstone after Labor Day. I have talked to the techs at Gas Stop and they were super helpful last year.

I worked in the Natural Gas Industry for 22 years and we performed the same test on someone’s house. We would cut every appliance off and we would “time the Meter” to check for leaks. Great video Todd! You guys are awesome!

I've always allowed my fridge to get cold, and then traveled with the propane on to keep it cold. 20+ years with no issues. I've never traveled through Tunnels, so that hasn't been an issue. But I do turn it off when fueling up. I know the system isn't being affected by the actual airflow or I would have gotten a failure lights at some point. I will pay more attention because of this video and will consider turning off during travel days in the future.

I installed the Gas Stops in 2021. I purchased them because I travel with the RV Refrigerator on propane and thought it would provide another level of protection. Yes, I shut the system off a gas stations or going through tunnels. BTW due to Gas Stop length I had to purchase the 90-degree pigtail (stainless steel) in order to install. These pigtails are well made and simplified installation.

Since you're proving yourself reckless I bet you've never trained yourself on how to put out a propane tank that is on fire! So when you do have an issue you will be completely helpless and dependant on social services like firefighters which I bet you don't even agree with supporting through taxes. Cuz you're SpEc1aL and everyone else is the problem.

Good video. As usual. Growing up in govt. shops where it’s always been safety safety safety. I always shut mine off. I have an old camper with an old fridge. Proper running “by the book” calls for it to be level. I travel mountainous terrain quite often, so I figure why put too much stress on an old fridge, plus my short hops, fridge stays cool enough. Long hops? Well, bit more hassle but I get the freezer de-iced! Anyway, to each their own. The gas stop looks like a nice product to have.

When you take your photos, make sure you are shooting the gauge from the same distance and angle to make them easily comparable. A leakdown test can be done with any accurate gauge made for propane, but this is nice for added safety.

Great Tip! I talked with my neighbor and he likes travel with the refrigeration on (non 12v type) to keep the food cold. I told that it isn't a good idea to travel the propane gas on and in the Grand Design manual it is unclear if you should or should not. I like your tip.

NEVER travel with the propane bottles on regardless of the "gas stop". I once was a mechanic at a service station that had gas pumps. A man pulled in with his conversion van to fuel up. He inserted the pump nozzle into the gas tank, turned on the pump and began dispensing fuel. While the pump was running he decided to step over the hose between the vehicle and the fuel pump. While stepping over the the hose his foot caught the hose and pulled out of the fuel filler neck and hosed down the side of his vehicle with gasoline. Well, what was next to the fuel filler? Yep, the exhaust port to a propane appliance that was running thus igniting the gasoline, the vehicle and the ground around the pump island. By the time I got out there with a fire extinguisher, the gasoline had formed a flaming stream past the outer (nearest the street) pump island, across the parking lot and to the gutter. After dousing the flames between the vehicle and the gutter, I returned to the vehicle and extinguished the flames at the fuel filler neck. NEVER travel with the propane on!

As a full timer I have no choice but to drive with a tank on to keep the fridge cool - plus I've driving in freezing conditions and needed the furnace. Of course going through tunnels or going on a ferry one must shut off their propane.

Hello D.W. Thank you for watching the videos. We love other points of view as RVing covers a wide range. I will say though that if everyone had a problem there would be no discussion and a law would be in place already. This is an added risk that can be avoided. The great thing is you have the freedom to make that choice. My job is to simply alert the public so they can make an educated decision.

It's not a problem until something happens. In Macon, Georgia on I-75 south around 20-25 years ago there was a tow behind camper and a car accident. The car hit the camper on the kitchen side. So the car was at fault. The owner of the tow behind had the propane on to keep his refrigerator cold. Once the car hit camper it cause a small explosion, metal debris went through the windshield, striking the driver, and end up dying in the hospital. The owner of the camper was charged with Second-degree vehicular homicide because he had his tanks open. Mind you it's legal to drive with your tanks open in Georgia and the car was at fault.

@@dawg7915 If I had to guess it is because the owner of the camper negligence cause some ones death. I was around 15 years old when it came out. The news was saying that since owner of the camper was convicted, the family of the car where suing the owner of the camper family since he was convicted. So it happen years before that. So news just briefly described the accident. They where more focus on the lawsuit.

How do you keep your refrigerator cold?
@NationalRVTrainingAcademy
@NationalRVTrainingAcademy Жыл бұрын
There are several practical ways to keep your fridge cool. When there is no power move your meats and dairy to the freezer (, or take a frozen block of meat/food out of the freezer and put in the fridge. This will add about 2-3 hours travel time without getting above 40. Onboard generator? its perfectly fine and safer to run the genny down the road. You don't need to run it all the time. Say every two hours on the trip turn it on for an hour or two. So between gas stops/pottluy stops. Small inverter that pulls from the battery bank and solar panels.

One sentence answer. Legally, NO! DOT regs FORBID Class A and B vehicles (RV's) from traveling with open LPG tanks. Also EVERY state that has a tunnel requires that ALL compressed fuel tanks be "off" before entering ANY tunnel, and almost all states have "sniffers" at tunnel entrances to detect open fuel tanks and you will be stopped and heavily fined, and your vehicle may be impounded in four Eastern States. I personally know a trucker who drove into NYC with his LP reefer running fined $20K and parked for 14 days-that means he lost over three months pay! Anyone says it's "OK" is a liar.

@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy Sorry but the comment about it being illegal to travel with propane valves on is incorrect. Transport Canada and the various provincial and territorial governments do not require propane to be turned off when traveling down the road. The only requirement for propane to be turned off is when on board a ferry or when turning into a gas station.
