This is wonderfully informative. I’ve played guitar for many years but never fully understood what all the different pedals actually do. It’s great to have them explained and demonstrated. Thanks so much for creating this 🙂👌🏽

Thank you, both for the demo of these pedals. I use a Pitch Fork with my electric guitar but now I’m going to add it to my acoustic.

Not sure why this isn't being mentioned... the MXR Phaser, which I used 40 years ago with an electric and Marshall stack (a la debut VH album), sounds superb on the Taylor acoustic. Wow.

Agree I thought that pedal sounded the best on the acoustic. Gave it some edge without sounding completely unnatural.

If you use stereo combo such as Roland JC40 or Roland Mobile Cube, you could split the signal before effects and send clean sound to one side and sound processed through effects (so called “wet sound”) to the other side. With mono combo you could use parallel mixer pedal to blend small portion of “wet sound” into (behind) full volume of your clean sound. With stereo combo you could even try stereo effect pedals (and even blend them with stereo parallel mixer pedal back to clean sound if you split the signal before).

A lot depends on the source of your amplified sound. Guitarists like Mike Dawes and Jon Gomm use three sources: an internal mic, a piezo and a magnetic sound hole pickup. Both run the more exotic effects through the mag only. Both Dawes and Gomm rely heavily on percussive techniques such hitting the body and have found that an octave pedal will try to find the octave of them slapping the body, which sounds really bad. Both artists run a fairly conservative chain on the mic and piezo (reverb, delay, compression). Also, their sound is a combination of clean acoustic and electrified sounds.

I use my Tumnus Deluxe, Boss EQ-200, & Ego compressor with electric, acoustic, and bass. Those are some of the most versatile pedals ever. Just dial back the gain/sustain/attack pots on acoustic.

I've been doing this for a while with my 6 and 12 string guitars... It forces you to learn how to compress acoustic dynamics up front to get the best tracking and response from your effect pedals...

Compressor also adds sustain to notes in a solo.

Really interesting. Particularly the combinations. Have pedals for use with electric & headrush gigboard.. Will try some of these with acoustic.

I vouch for the Tumnus Deluxe and the Super Badass distortion. Those 2 are 2 of my favourites.

I run my Electric-Acoustic through my ME-80 all the time and before that through a few pedals that I had (Boss Metal Pedal anyone?). This needs to be explored more. Thanks for the vid, Megan.

The Wampler of Klon is best used as a little bit of extra magic to the tone, not so much as a drive of it's own (imo) either way I feel all of the drive pedals will work better on an acoustic in combination with the compressor. For a great example of how overdrive can sound epic on acoustic you only need to look to John Butler!

What about the Fender Smolder Acoustic Overdrive pedal? Also the Stymon Cloudburst? It is handy to have phase and notch in your EQ toolkit.

I'd like to see something on playing acoustic through a pencil mic then through some kind of xlr pedal like a voice pedal for instance.

Hiya. Still missing the Southend shop :-( Can you do an acoustic take on Electro Harmonix Mel9 C9 and S9 trio sometime? Or some alternatives of these? Thanks.

A good acoustic multi effects pedal with 32 point floating and fixed point technology with IR is what we use today. Without the IR all that is undesirable with a piezo pick up muddies the sound like this presentation. The nerdiness of this is fun, but like I said it is a feedback nightmare. The amp is also undesirable for acoustic pedals and guitars.

Let's see, I've been using electric guitar efx pedals for about 50 years. This is nothing new, to say the least. Not so sure their pick of efx truly suits acoustic guitar. Overdrive is a really bad idea fyi. There is only one overdrive specifically made for acoustic guitar and its the Fender Smolder. Why? Because an acoustic guitar is a full frequency instrument and typical overdrive or distortion pedal will accentuate the treble or highs on an acoustic which sounds like broken glass in a blender. The pedal types that do suit acoustic guitar are: preamps, chorus, eq, reverb, delay and compressor. And I have to mention the TC Electronics Body Rez pedal that re-stores the sense of body into the to tone. Efx like phaser, pitch shift and overdrive are a bad idea. Compressors can be very good or very bad. Most of them are made for electric guitar and that's where they should be used. Less than 10% of compressors are suitable for acoustic guitar. A DynaComp compressor is exactly the wrong type of compressor to use as it is squeezes the dynamics right out of the guitar. JHS 1176 or the Wampler Ego compressor or the high-end PettyJohn Crush both have a blend control that adds back in the acoustic signal, making the compression more transparent and not squished. Finally, an interesting pedal I haven't yet bought or used is the Boss OC-5 octave pedal that only creates an octave for the bass note and is really interesting for solo players, but not for a band setting. Good luck and be careful out there.
