So funny what you said about the DS1 distortion, I was an apprentice at the time and my journeyman told me to go and get some tools from the van, on the way to get the tools the owner of the fish factory i was doing the job at shouted over to me. He asked if I could take a few boxes of fish out to the loading bay for him and he said I can have anything I wanted from the old store room...various cardboard boxes full of old crap pretty much....so I sift through some old Christmas decorations and some old newspapers and plates ect and I come across a guitar pedal and it was the DS1 in pristine condition. I pull it out and go to ask the owner if could have it...he tells me it was his sons' who passed away recently and he said to me, you remind me alot of my son and I think it was meant for you. It was my first guitar pedal and I'll never get rid of it....

My Record Time minimal rig answer : People think of John Frusciante as the guy with the gigantic pedalboard from which he draws complex sonic textures. But back in '91, his rig for the landmark album Blood Sugar Sex Magik was minimal. Basically it consisted of a wah pedal, a chorus and a distortion. (WH10, DOD FX65-not his usual Boss CE-1- and a DS-2.) These are still part of his core sound, even on the new 2022 singles. There you go! Minimal rig = Legendary sound. Thx Josh!

I was lucky enough to grow up in a home saturated w Beatles. I never understood why people would hate them, dislike them or even just be ambivalent about them. They are at the root of almost everything that has come after. It almost doesn't matter what you put to the test, eventually going back through its evolution, you will find that the seed came from them. For the longest time I thought that there was a section of society that was musically deformed, underdeveloped, or maybe just so pretentious that they would put their own ego in a position to try and eclipse this musical gift that we had received. That was the only way I could explain "Beatles hate." Anyone that grew up w the Beatles knows exactly what I'm talking about. But then recently I figured it out: its not that man is naturally malicious or so self destructive that it would purposely denigrate the musical harbingers of love; no, its that some of us are "delayed." Some of us just haven't been exposed to enough of their music to see that hating the Beatles is like kicking yourself in the "music balls." Your comment about 'Tomorrow Never Knows" is a perfect example... If you like that song, I humbly suggest you look into it's history, and how it was based on a mixture of John Lennon's study of the "Egyptian Book of the Dead" and the beginnings of his explorations into LSD. If you choose any of the 3 subjects mentioned: Lennon, EBotD, or LSD, and begin an honest and brave research project, you will have firmly set foot on the path to the greater truth of the universe and greater existence at large... That's the beauty and true existential import of the Beatles, they are a smaller fractal manifestation of the greater beauty and love that our universe and all of creation is, and possibly even a microcosmic model of creation itself! Anyway, welcome to the the more beautiful and pure understanding of love, music, and reality in general! It makes me happy to see you here! and let me be the first to congratulate you and wish you well on the most beautiful and amazing journey, to which you have found the door. If you decide to walk through, I feel that you probably cancel out the karma of some frightened authoritarian deceiver somewhere that has just manipulated some poor soul into believing that its "not cool" to like the Beatles, and thus set them back musically and spiritually by an unknown but seemingly catastrophic degree. I hope that you continue on your path and possibly show the way to someone else; thats the only way we are gonna get out of this world "alive." I apologize for the lengthy response, and assure you that I'm not some sort of "Masonesque" zealot. I just know that the road to our salvation and a more utopian society is going to come from everyday people, like us, making conscious decisions to set down our divisions and embrace the beauty of music, art, and all other creative acts. Best wishes and regards to you my friend. -C

Rubber soul along with revolver are imo two of the best albums ever recorded. What's great about you is you give credit where credit is due instead stroking your own ego with what you build. Its impressive. Btw, your products are top notch and thank you for the modest approach.

The greatest pedal I've ever used is the Proco Rat. It's just...perfection. So so simple and easy to use but it is incredibly versatile. The compression is nice, the distortion isn't overpowering with the right settings, and when you start to crank it you can get unbelievable sounds out of it. But the BEST thing about it by far is how much it preserves the actual sound of your guitar. I find even with Boss OD-3s or Big Muffs that they don't let much of the guitar through. The Proco Rat really does. I. Fucking. Adore it. And as for Reverbs I think the Hall of Fame is great. Would recommend it big time.

This video is so well done, and full of great points as well. Your videos are getting me through a very tough time in my life.. My first child was born in September, my wife couldn't work yet because it hadn't been long enough since the labor, so I was the only income coming in which was manageable. Things were tight as my wife has two boys of her own that I consider mine as well. Her boys loved to listen to me play, and if I would use the effects pedals on my board, forget it, they were wanting me to teach them JUST so they could use the pedals Haha (they're 7 and 10, but I've never grown out of my love and fascination for pedals either and I'm an adult in my 30s.) When we were in the hospital during the delivery, my wife's parked car got hit by a landscaper, and wasn't driveable. The company that did it denied it and refused to pay for it so she couldn't go for an interview or a job until we got it fixed.. which was not going to be a very cheap fix. Ontop of that, in early November, I got laid off from my job as a chef because a new company was coming in and rather than hire me (which was initially supposed to happen) they moved one of their own employees into my position even though I had the most time put into that kitchen. So at that point.. I was sitting in my car, defeated, fearing going home to tell my wife what happened because I didn't want to worry her, wondering how I'm going to support my wife and her boys, and my new born daughter. Thankfully my love of playing music got me past the initial shock, I'd play and think about what happened, I'd get mad, or worry, or get upset and play until it went away. I knew I'd have to sell my stuff, so I knew it was my last time using a lot of it. The memories I've had with all this stuff, you can't explain it to someone who doesn't play. I had to basically sell a lot of my gear, and all of my pedals, with the exception of my wah pedal. For some reason not selling that made me feel better to know I at least had something to build back up from down the road, and not feel like I let go of all my memories by selling EVERYTHING and wiping my setup out entirely. As a father, the decision was easy, obviously, support my family at all costs. Letting go was very very hard though, it's such a massive part of who I am, and what I was creativity as an artist and a musician. Playing shows in bands made up 20 years of my life. Thankfully they did go to people who were very appreciative of them, and will hopefully enjoy them almost as much as I did. But I still miss them and watching the boys faces when I'd step on a flange or delay, or the feeling I'd get when I stepped on my overdrive or chorus. At least that stuff, even though I let it go, still gave me something when I did. I was able to keep up with bills, and come up with enough money to get my wife's car fixed. And obviously I have my daughter who brings so much happiness into my life even when I had a hard time looking at her without getting upset because I wondered how I was going to keep a roof over her head. I owe a lot more to pedals now than just using them as a way to create music. They helped me keep my family under a roof during the holidays, and gave me a chance to provide for my family when I wasn't sure I'd be able to. And your channel has been a bittersweet, but ultimately therapeutic distraction. Thank you for making these videos, and for giving artists and musicians ways to Express and make music that gets them through a point in their life, or helps them create good memories they carry with them forever.

My favorite minimalist album is probably Back in Black by AC⚡️DC. Pure Rock ’n’ Roll perfection and not a lot of flash (except the name of course), but just a completely solid record of a band at peak creatively coming together without a lot of fuss to make a milestone of a record.

love the album. Some filler- muff winwood (steve's bro) produced it. Used an aural exciter. Knopfler probably used that 60s red strat w/orange squeezer compressor though dunlop volume pedal, w/ delay and reverb into fender vibrolux w/ fane replacement speaker.

I'm at the point I just need more practice now. Been teaching guitar 15 years, have all the "right" gear, need more time for practice. /Custom-made LesPaul-copy (but 25" scale, 12" radius) with Loller P90s+bigsby /Fender Custom '68 Deluxe Reverb /MXR's OD pedal (with 100Hz knob), TS9, DD-6, Boss Tremelo, and tuner. Loving this combination.

For me, an essential element is a volume pedal. It was the first pedal I bought 35 years ago and still can't live without one. Volume swells with a delay is my favourite sound. It's also great for plugging in a tuner and switching off the amp when changing guitars. You can even sneak in a buffer to keep your signal strong.

You know, I’ve somehow gone 20 years without ever playing through any sort of tube screamer. This video is reminding me that maybe it’s time... As far as simple: most things by Low, particularly the album “Things We Lost in the Fire.” Their newest two records are absolutely amazing, though less “simple” in terms of sonic content (though great displays of Red Panda/ZVex effects).

Compressor pedal is essential I feel. Can’t go wrong with the MXR dyna comp, it’ll fatten up a clean tone beautifully, or let a distorted lead tone truly soar. It also tamed my jazzmaster which tends to have wild undertones.

The Smiths Hatful Of Hollow was released shortly after their debut record. Most of the songs were tracked with basic stuff: Fender Twins, Telecaster, a Casino, a slide. A Jazz Chorus. The most exotic effect was the AMS delay and pitch shifter. You can have all that stuff and get the AMS as a plug in now but good luck sounding like Marr without lots and lots of practice. He changed the sound of rock music using for the most part his imagination and whole lot of technical ability as well which is overlooked. He was in his early 20’s at the time.

Revolver is a great album. I agree with you, it's nice to listen to music before things got so complicated. I'm a bit of a purist and love earlier recordings from guys like Chuck Berry, early Eric Clapton (Bluesbreakers), Mick Taylor... those guys played straight into the amp and nothing was lacking. My rig preference is a small Fender tube amp with a Blues Driver, Boss GE-7, Joyo Atmosphere reverb pedal and a tuner pedal
