They’re not “criminals” in that context. It’s not as if they’re wanted for a recent school shooting massacre, and they’re safe if they run into a church. They’re simply undocumented. Being undocumented is in itself not an active criminal act. Think when your driver’s license expires. Would you call someone who let their license expire but still continues to drive a “criminal” if they have intent to renew it soon? Regardless, officers do not have the right to pull you over because they suspect your driver’s license expired. They have to wait until you commit a traffic violation and only then do they discover your license expired. If your car is up for repossession, your “safe zone” is your garage; repo workers cannot break through your garage. Immigrants trying to stay under the radar should of course have “safe zones” including churches, funerals, and their daughter’s dance recitals. No father should be put in the position where he’s worried about attending his child’s play because he fears arrest.
