The U.K. hopes to remake the region between the cities of Oxford and Cambridge into the next Silicon Valley. But Britain needs to attract more skilled talent to its shores if it’s going to become a tech power.
India is the third largest startup ecosystem in the world, and it has plenty of tech talent.
“India has been an engineering global talent hub for the world over recent years,” said Amarjit Singh, the CEO of India Business Group, a consulting firm that supports deals between the two countries.
“Sixty-five percent of the country’s 1.4 billion population is under the age of 35,” Singh added, pointing to the potential economic benefit of a young workforce.
However, immigration remains a highly contested topic in British politics, and it’s unclear how an influx of Indian talent would be received locally.
Watch the video above to learn how India can help the U.K. with its ambition to become a tech superpower.

FTA has not yet been reported officially to have been cancelled. The delegates of UK and India both have released statements opposing the widely published media article. There is a latest interview of a UK Parliamentarian herself affirming the continuation of the FTA discussions.

They earlier mocked India's space programs until we amply demonstrated to the world what we could do with a limited budget. More recently they even doubted Cowin which turns out to be the most advanced vaccine tracker in the world and quoted it as a pretext for mandating quarantines even for the vaccinated. They rarely acknowledge the strive that India has made on the digital infrastructure front and never let go an opportunity to down play the country and yet they have the audacity to seek India's help on building their tech hubs. Its time Indians build India rather than take such baits.

@tstcikhthys

@@Salmanul_ Exactly. India is doing absolutely nothing on this front, yet somehow has pipe dreams about becoming a "superpower" in every field. Here's how they could though: - Allow dual citizenship and convert all OCIs back to citizens, for one. - Then, actually go on a Rwanda-style cleaning spree (instead of doing lip service to Swacch Bharat) to clean up the filth. - Then, restrict cars and motorcycles and designate more road space to pedestrians, bikes, and bus rapid transit. - Get rid of income taxes completely, and unify all GST rates to something like 20% and put it on every single item without exceptions. Then, just give a rebate of the poverty line to everyone legally living in the country so that day-to-day stuff is not inflated. - Spend the increase in money that's likely going to be generated on fixing up the pipes in cities so that clean drinking water comes out of the tap for everyone 24/7. Most of these things wouldn't even cost much money, but they'd radically improve living conditions in India and would make people consider India as a legitimate place they'd want to live. Everything else can go from there.

Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) was the 16th largest bank in the US, and it wasn't subject to the most strict controls. How many banks actually are subject to those controls, besides the big four? Any bank could suffer a run and fail, and if that happens to a community level or even state level bank it probably won't upset the national economy or ecosystem of banks, but any multi-state bank should be more closely watched.

I dont think Indians would move to UK, 1. UK not in EU anymore so no schengen Visa 2. High cost of living and taxes. If you earn $30k in UK per year you would hardly save anything whereas in India you would be able to save approx $15k - $20k. 3. Public Universities of Germany and many other eu countries are free while that of UK are not
@balsdsa

Reposting the message from above 1) EU economic stagnation in the past 15 years. Since 2008 there was 0 economic growth. I think just recently EU as a whole got above 2008 levels. 2) UK is still leading in terms of education and research. Look who made the EU vaccine as an example (it was imperial college London with Astrazeneca Germany), no poland, no netherlands, no denmark. Compare how many universities are in top 100 globally from UK and how many from EU. 3) UK is still the tech and financial hub of European continent. Just last week the AI company c3 ai announced they are moving their headquarters from Paris to London.

Among my circle of friends and relatives, I have seen the desire to immigrate diminish significantly in recent times. Apart from an improvement in India’s economic confitions, the biggest reason is the health of parents. Unlike past generations, migrant Indians dont have 2-3 siblings back home to care for their parents. The UK, Canada, Europe and Japan will still get immigrants from India, but they are usually not the top of their class like before.

The standard of education in India is also rising every decade, and the Indian tech universities like IITs and IIIT's are producing tech wizards. The only problem is that just 10% of the STEM graduates are really employable without any training. That means 250K in a year, and this mumber is increasing as education in India is going through a revolutionary upheaval due to improved internet connections and increasing tech literacy. By 2030, India will produce an army of really employable engineers. Both the USA and the EU will need more and more Indian tech workers as their young population isn't taking up STEM education. I think there is a huge potential in Indonesia and Africa as well, only if people are ready to provide the right environment.

That's very scary, because now there will be scarcity of jobs for citizens of UK, if UK really want to develop itself in terms of technology and IT. Because Indian engineers hijack positions wherever they go, and now they are suffering from hatred by Americans in America for the same reason.😑

*There is a very specific and a systematic reason as to why in the 50+ years of the Internet and the Software industry, it's always been the American company that has gone to become a global, publicly traded, and a 100B+ in valuation company. There are 7 continents and 207 sovereign nations in the world, but when you observe your personal and professional digital life, it's been surrounded with American software products. One of the key reasons to this is the INDIAN people from India. The US realized this in the late 80s and early 90s that if they want to be a global power in the Internet and the Software world, they need INDIANS. The result is in front of us. Some of the largest global companies have Indian CEOs. And some of the large non-tech companies have Indian CEOs, such as FedEx, Starbucks, ex-Mastercard, ex-PepsiCo, etc. The UK knows this. Germany knows this. Japan knows this. The UAE (Dubai) knows this. Singapore knows this. And pretty much every other country. The problem is they are just too late to realize this.*

Firstly Indians STEM graduates don't need to emigrate since ample opportunities opening up back home. India is already fifth largest economy way forward to be $10 trillion economy in next 12-15 years. India is already IT power house & working to become engineering hub with large strides in core engineering & manufacturing in top sectors like aerospace, space tech, heavy machineries, marine & ship building, Robotics & IOT, defense etc. Now considering UK that's an interesting case a Country that is moving backwards. UK welcomed Pakistani Islamic fanatics resulting in spread of fundamental Sunni elements throughout Britain. Interestingly we find an Islamic Nation Saudia Arabia liberalizing it's society against which UK has been adopting Orthodoxy. We find British Govt lacdasical approach as witnesses during Blasphemy case when a specially abled white teenager was targeted for what Islamists considered disrespect to Quran. Further British Govt has encouraged islamic fanatics targeting Indians. We can sense British leadership lacking pride in British identify will submit to Islamic fanatics and will adopt Sharia law to become Next Afghanistan rather than IT superpower. Indian STEM talent has witnessed this radicalization of UK and has been dropping emmigration plans to UK.

Whilst this video focuses mostly on technology, I think the challenge of recreating a Silicon Valley is multifaceted. For one thing, I think the consumer culture in the US is unique. Entrepreneurs there almost take for granted the environment where people are keen on trying out their latest creations. In the US, anything goes it seems, and that I envy. Most tech ecosystems elsewhere are limited to the narrow needs of the consumers such as edtech or fintech (where I'm from for example). Tech and talent is only part of the picture.
@colbr6733
@colbr6733 Жыл бұрын
True this is commonly overlooked with regard to the US, I have also found parts of Asia have a real aspirational culture and energy which isn't prevalent in the EU and UK, where it is much more conservative. One aspect of UK product development culture by comparison to the US, EU environment that I have seen over the years is an ability to turn problem solving into a very powerful dynamic within the development/tech group itself. I have seen this totally transform the company's ability to cultivate new markets. This isn't to say product development elsewhere is inferior such as here in the Netherlands where I live and work, but it is different.

Down here where I live in Australia, there is very little appetite for risk, everyone is too scared and wants the easy life. We have the same attitude as the British, maybe worse. This why any “New Silicon Valley!” or similar innovation initiatives are doomed to failure as soon as they begin. Silicon Valley gave birth to the tech industry. It has dominated that industry from the very beginning. The UK has a lot of catching up to do. Building a rail to connect Oxford and Cambridge will help, but it's not much in a greater scope of things. You first have to build the talent pool, and then attract the venture capitalists. Do you think the US is resting on its laurels? To be the next "Silicon Valley", you also have to beat other Tech Hubs in the US: the New York metro area, Los Angeles, DC, Boston, and a host of other cities that have significant tech industries. The New York metro area alone is about two-thirds as big as Silicon Valley when it comes to employment size, and Los Angeles is not far behind.

Uk can't even protect the Indian high commision and our diplomats in uk. Why would they think we would trust them ? They still have the same mindset and their country's slowly but steadily going down the drain because of this same mindset. It is their problem and they should solve it themselves. We have to put our gold in London when we were asking loans to IMF because we were near bankruptcy in 1990. Now we have have grown why should we share our growth with them.

Don't go to UK. They are isolated and don't have automatic access to EU market like before. Go to any one of the EU countries if you want to be an Entrepreneur. Don't be held back because of the language barrier. Countries like Germany, Poland, Netherlands are more friendly to skilled talent and more convenient if you want to bring your family along with you. Moreover EU is one market. Any product or service you build within EU can be scaled to entire EU market without any restrictions. And trust me quality of life in Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Austria is way better than UK. If language is something you care about then there is Ireland which is still in the EU and they speak English. I would suggest you to avoid UK like a plague if you want to be successful in your journey.

Anyways, this is all expected! Indians already have huge presence in UK and according to latest UK census, nearly 40% of Indians in UK work in STEM sector. Most of them are already my bosses... I also know a lot of Indian techies going back to their countries after gaining some experience here to set up start ups in India. But, yes China is bigger than India in tech and still rules in a lot of sectors. One thing India has that China doesn't is a very rich connected and integrated diaspora established in UK and India's geopolitical stance right now.

AI will have a huge disruption on jobs especially in growing economies as most of those industries are first in line for automation. If the UK government can get a lead in the AI space and integrate it into its key industries then it could solve a lot of the productivity issues changing the conditions for cooperation. A lot of the projections on where the next big economies are don’t seem to factor that the jobs that would move or be created in these places will be greatly reduced due to the combination of AI and automation. The likely scenario currently playing out is wealth being concentrated into the hands of those who own/run these industries who can get ahead by spending less on payroll like Tesla did in their production. This is all even before you even consider the self driving and drone disruption. India should tread carefully as they won’t be walking the same route previous economies have walked and the wealth opportunities are favouring more and more of the 1% rather than the diversified opportunities to grow the middle class.

Winston Churchill - “If Independence is granted to India, power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water would be taxed in India.”

@@fromthefountofyouth Decide what? Do you even know how the corporation works? A CEO has a lot of power. They call many shots at the company. There is a reason why there is a CEO of a company. Also, there is a reason why there is only one CEO of most of the companies, so that the decision making is faster and more efficient. CEOs decide the strategy of the company, they decide who to put in the management, they decide on the financials, they decide on the operation side of things, they decide on the culture of the company. They pretty much decide everything. Of course, for a publicly traded company, there is going to be a Board, but the CEO is the one who has the full and absolute power to influence the Board.

@@fromthefountofyouth Yes, I have. Steve Jobs and Travis Kalanick is what happens when the CEOs do not perform or have bad relationships with the Board. Indians, on the other hand, are made CEOs because of their negotiation, leading, and organizational skills. By the way, I thought you had commented on my other comment, hence, it's about the CEOs and not the politicians. But I agree, at the end of the day, in a democracy, it's the people who will decide, but Rishi and Yousaf are critical in leading the whole thing.
