Part 2 of our series on Inflation...which of these strategies for fighting it seems most compelling to you? Anything we're missing? How are YOU being impacted by all this inflation?

Housing costs are a huge part, and it is uneven, particularly hitting rich urban markets the hardest. A lot of this is on purpose, with long term entrenched policies to protect property values of homeowners over affordable housing initiatives.

Yep. Housing is definitely out of control.

I think this was a great video. I think America has been having an economic decline for decades. I think this is because America is far less competitive than other counties. One reason is the basic education system in the us is terrible. In other countries they learn multiplication in kindergarten. Another reason America is less competitive is that the population density is low compared to others. China has very high population density so it's more competitive than the us. But a high population density isn't very sustainable in the long run, so driving the population to increase isn't a good idea either.

Great point about education. We didn't even get into THAT as a long-term solution - but it's the elephant in the room for pretty much every topic we cover on this channel.

@@AboveTheNoise the aversion and gatekeeping of financial education in the US certainly feels to be by design . Especially amongst black folks . Its culturally taboo somehow to discuss money and share best practices .
@aquilamflammeus55692 жыл бұрын
Education in the US may be abysmal but teaching multiplication in kindergarten isn't the solution either. Some countries don't even start school that early yet their education system blows the US's completely out of the water. The main problem is that a lack of centralisation means that good policies and strategies fail to spread across the country meaning school waste thousand on methods everyone else discovered was worthless decades ago.

Wonderful video and supporting examples. It really frustrates me that higher inflation hurts those with the least the most and the "solutions" that we keep using hurt those with the least the most. Given the current US and world environment (literally and metaphorically), it is of increasing importance that we ask our politicians how they will act to protect out futures. I am tired of politics working like reactions on social media - too many politicians acting to get likes rather than to improve our future.

Using fuel prices is a bad example. You can easily avoid paying most of the fuel cost by just riding a bicycle. The cost of fuel is only a very small factor in the cost of any of the goods you have to purchase, so it won't hit as hard unless you're using a car or similarly wasteful mode of transportation.

Great video. I think things are very different now than in the 1970s. I think political activism by very large (and international) corporations is a lot more important and effective than it ever has been. I don't see the U.S. ever busting a trust (if i can make the joke) again. With so much profit centered 'journalism' going on, I don't know how the electorate can even make good decisions any more. The days of Ida Tarbell and effective investigative journalism I think are behind us.
@AboveTheNoise2 жыл бұрын
I would agree to a point - but there is still some pretty great investigative journalism happening at the local level and at some nonprofits like the Center for Investigative Reporting - but the problem is that our fractured media landscape makes finding that content like looking for a needle in a haystack, and even if you do find it the political weight of the findings gets diluted. And in this day and age with everyone simply rejecting facts that don’t confirm their preexisting bias, it’s hard to sway public opinion enough to organize real action. We’re going for the long term, hard work solution - focus on improving public education and helping the next generation think more critically and gain crucial media literacy skills. Definitely not a quick fix, but we think essential!

Inflation affects everyone including homeowners and renters. Not every owner wants to raise rent but when utilities, taxes, insurance, mortgage, interest goes up if they don’t raise your rent they face the danger of losing the property to the banks. I’ve seen many properties go into foreclosures in the area because the owners just can’t come up with the money to pay their mortgages.

Good video, but I have a problem with one of your points/arguments: Renewable energies. Most if not all energy sources aren't renewable. In the video "Why renewables can’t save the planet | Michael Shellenberger | TEDxDanubia" they talk about the downsides of these "green" energies. The best solution so far is nuclear power because it's the least invasive for humans, natur and the climtate because every source is in some ways invasive/changing the environment. I'm excited to hear of you because most of the time people are against nuclear power. (at least here where I live)

Blaming current inflation on 'greedy corporations' shows a lack of critical thinking skills. Corps have always been greedy, are we supposed to believe that just now it's all of a sudden kicking in and causing a rise in prices when previously inflation had been holding steady at around 2%? Also, I'm not so sure the voice of 'young people' needs to be heard. Young people, on average, are stupider than older people. That whole thing about how the U.S. dealt with inflation during the 80's? Young people need it explained to them, older people lived through it.

Literally just stop making more money. Money is only being made on the premise that it is to avoid deflation; so why not just print less of it, with the intention of letting inflation remain with that 3 per cent leverage?
