When Alex Battaglia got his hands on a Steam Deck, this was inevitable, right? So, can the Steam Deck really run Crysis? And if so, what type of optimised settings produce the best performance? What's the best balance of features and battery life... and what about 60fps?

A 40fps cap wouldn't look good unless they are able to to downclock the Deck's screen to 40hz. 40fps on a 60hz display will lead to incorrect frame delivery. However, Valve has said they are working on getting the screen to downclock to 40hz so that 40fps would still look smooth. I also believe the Phawx got it working in Windows, so that's a positive indication for SteamOS.

I recently bought the trilogy and I'm constantly blown away because of how amazing the graphics look, given it's TDP and form factor. I also have to say that it looks particularly awesome on Switch's OLED screen. Lastest patches increased docked resolution to 900p and brought back things like the motion blur intensity setting and Parallax Oclusion Mapping, that were missing when it first released. Atleast the original has raw mouse input. I just cant understand why so many pc ports get mouse acceleration. People complain about it all the time. Like with god of war, before they patched after a huge backlash, Developers cant seem to make good pc ports anymore. A pc game needs to be judged by pc standards. This peans a few measly things. 1 raw mouse input. 2 mixed inputs. 3 every key needs to be rebindable. 4 It needs to run good at most pc setups (wich is the hardest thing to do).

This sounds like it would be a good use-case for the 50hz refresh mode you've speculated about before.

It's more than speculation at this point, a dev on Twitter said they're working on switchable refresh rates but they have to improve the screen blanking time.
@219SilverChoc

50hz is probably abit too high here, 45 or 40hz would be a better bet. The only issue is that you would want to make sure FPS is consistent as the drop would be to Half the refresh rate, instead of being from a Third from Half (eg: 30fps cap at 60hz) or a Quater from a Third (eg: 40fps cap at 120hz).

Great Video - would just love to see more steam deck video’s with other titles like this and optimized settings. I made my steam deck dual bootable and am running windows game pass games on it and so far have been really impressed with the performance.

Awesome vid, as always! I would love to see some idTech on Deck and also more comparisons with Nintendo Switch ports, if possible. CryEngine wasn't half bad there, I imagine if games like Prey (2017) would run well too.

It's worth noting that Crysis Remastered has a 30 fps cap usable without console commands (which works great for me on my 5 year old gtx 980m). I wonder why they didn't mention it.

Loved the intro and outro. I would totally love to see more tests. Like what you preferred games akin to Witcher 3 to be optimized at, and other games that are still at the (unknown) verification classification. Halo MCC for example, which I got Reach to work well on my wife's Deck. Maybe some certain Sega/Atlus games?

Great to see a detailed, serious look at how the performance holds up at 60fps, even if the Deck can't quite cut it. And battery life aside, the results aren't really too terrible... maybe at 480p, the settings could be turned up to reduce pop-in ever so slightly. (I know that's a really low resolution, but it's the same as the Wii U gamepad... or multiple times better than the DS or 3DS!)

You put some good work in there. Question: do your settings, with the overhead of 30fps also work in native 1280x800 resolution? Because it looks like it just might, and for a bit more screen space i'd sacrifise some batterylife.
