It does. Then again CrySis sort of came out around the time we started "hitting the roof" as it were. Of course graphics technology has still come far since CrySis (I'm not gunna say CrySis looks as good as, say, Battlefront 2), but it hasn't come... well, AS far. Compare the 10 year gap between Quake II and CrySis. You went from Quake II, to Half-Life, to Quake III, to Half-Life 2, to CrySis in those 10 years. The leaps we've made since haven't been nearly as drastic. Tech has slowed down a bit more.

To put into perspective. Imagine playing 1997 game in 2007. Look at how extreme was leap from quake and duck nukem to crysis. And now imagine playing 2007 game in 2017. How little in comparison progress is. And some of modern games are actually look worse than 10 years old crysis. This is insane

It's a logarithmic progression. Stuff improved really quickly, but as time has gone on the difference in improvement has vastly decreased and it'll probably be like that forever now. The closer you get to truly realistic graphics, the more minute the improvements.
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 6 жыл бұрын
honestly when you compare crisis to newer far cry games or other games that go for that photo-realism look you can see vast differences in the "little" areas. things like volumetric lighting , shadow casting , Subsuface light scattering on skin, all these little advancements add up and quite a few games now outshine crisis easily. also consider that larger ram on video cards have allowed for even larger uncompressed texture files and that alone can crank the fidelity of a game up. every time you double a texture's pixel size you effectively multiply quality of the texture by 4. example 512x512 gives you pixel count of roughly 250 thousand , go to 1024 x1024 and you now have a pixel count of roughly 1 million pixels. you want to see this in effect take a look at a much older game say Doom 3, the first game to use uncompressed textures; it's un compressed textures were at 512x512 pixels (per texture). crisis had uncompressed textures at 1024x1024, that's 4 times the quality in texture. now fast forward to a modern game some High powered games today use 4096x4096 textures, you are looking at 16 times the quality compared to crisis 1 million pixels per texture. you won't see this difference at 1080p though or even in 4k ( because 1080p only outputs around 2 million pixels for the whole image, around 8 million for 4k). for this reason many games still use the more conservative 2048x2048 pixel size. which produces 4 million pixels per texture still 4x the quality of crisis , so a game using this resolution will have a massive difference in fidelity over crisis , especially when you are viewing it on a 4k monitor , or even at 1440p (which is about 3 million pixels on the whole screen). fact is as screen resolutions go up pixel resolutions have to as well. that is where much of a game's fidelity comes into play, because in a 3d game Textures are on every thing, smoke, water, characters , props, they all use textures and the lower qulity the textures , the more it shows when you up the screen resolution. Crysis with just a 1 million pixel size on it's textures clearly becomes less photorealistic even at 1080p because it's texture resolution is only half the screen resolution, compared to newer games whos textures are rendered at 4x the screen resolution of 1080p

I loved how I could put a 10x scope on an assault rifle with a silencer. Hide in a bush, snipe a dude, and watch in glee as his teammates fart about trying to wonder why Matt just decided to chow down on a dirt sandwich, finally after not getting a reply from him they then begin to spread out trying to find out what happened. By that time you could be on a boat sailing past them with a Joker-esque grin on your face. And yeah having a 970 now means I can pump up the settings to as high as the game allows. Glorious.

it looks VERY old compared to FarCry 4 and later instalments. Still pretty decent, but compared to games from 2018 or later, you've got low poly models, mediocre textures, low quality lighting, and an overall lack of environmental detail. FarCry 3 is graphically very close to Crysis, but that's because it was made for Xbox 360 and never optimized for PC or newer consoles

Yep, crysis is an excellent modern military shooter with the entire plot revolving around the least fun parts of it. It also goes unmentioned an alarming amount that the end parts of the game were absolutely pathetically optimized, you'd hit the last level on the carrier and be struggling to get 20fps whereas hitting the beach at the start ran smooth at 60.

@Pymell
@Pymell 7 жыл бұрын
Dizzyfatpigeon Well, the benchmarks shown in the video used a resolution of 1920x1200 which was quite high back then. I think I used a monitor with a 1280x1024 resolution and that was standard until HD displays were more common due to the PS3 and X360. IIRC I read an interview with a developer that mentioned they targeted 800x600 while developing (which surprised me a lot because that was already on the low end at the time), sadly I‘m not able to find it anymore. The link at the end is a CPU benchmark from 2007 using a 8800 GTX running at 800x600 demonstrating that acceptable framerates were possible with a drop in resolution. www.pcgameshardware.de/Crysis-Spiel-20597/Tests/Crysis-Quad-Core-bis-zu-23-Prozent-schneller-als-Dual-Core-622467/galerie/740297/?fullsize

I know, wasn't the reason people loved red faction the destructible environments? I mean, Just Cause 3 looks pretty good, but considering the entire point of the game is destroying things I would have happily settled for much worse graphics if it would mean destructible environments, and something like PUBG would benefit greatly from the added tactical options. Since we're moving away from linear games, where destructible terrain would cause problems with containing players, why haven't we seen more modern games with destructible terrain? That sounds much more fun than crafting to me, it always looked weird hitting an absolute shanty with a mini-nuke and seeing no damage to the structure at all once the fire went out.

The thing is they _couldn't_ look that good in 2007, as mentioned at the beginning of the video. The graphics were so far ahead of their time the 2007 hardware had trouble even on reduced settings. About the only thing that is dated now is the NPC model (the enemy faces look pretty bad up close.)

You didn't mention the sandbox engine that came with it in the CD, when I was a kid I spent more hours in it than playing the game, just search for crysis barrels and that was one of the things you could do, you could also make tornadoes, whole levels, create terrain, i guess as the name indicates sandbox, a lot of stuff that you could do. Don't know if this was a common feature in games or not. I know that in far cry 2 there was a sandbox for it also.

That's what I love about GOG.com; instead of just re-releasing the game as it was initially like STEAM or Origin do, GOG actually take the time to make the game work better with modern hardware, and the user doesn't have to take the time to go out and hunt the components down to do it themselves. While this _does_ (also, why can't KZbin make these damned text modifiers work with punctuation right next to them?), unfortunately, lead to lazy gamers (No offense, Clint), it makes it easier on the people who either don't have the time to hunt all that stuff down, or the people who just don't _want_ to deal with the hassle of hunting it all down, and in most cases, it, as the great Todd Howard once said, just works. GOG really and truly is the far superior game service amongst the three giants, if you will. And then there's the DRM-free aspect...but that's a story for another day...
@SpearM3064

They can't *always* make it work, though. Startopia, for example. On modern graphics cards, using Windows 10, the screen likes to go black every couple seconds. It doesn't make the game unplayable, just annoying. And the only solution, which doesn't work for everyone, was found on the GOG message boards... which means that GOG wasn't able to fix it. Now, I'm not slamming GOG at all. I'm just pointing out that even *they* can't always "make the game work better with modern hardware"... and in some cases, they're not legally allowed to. It's one thing to tweak a settings file until it works. It's another thing entirely to reverse-engineer the game code (which is illegal because of the EULA) to try to write a custom patch.

Blaming the consoles is just cheap. Crysis 3 was also released on consoles and still looked gorgeous. No console downgrade justifies the linear levels, bad AI and lack of graphical development that plagued Crysis 2. They fixed all of this in Crysis 3, but by then the damage was already done and people were so disappointed with Crysis 2 that Crysis 3 barely restored the former glory of the Crysis brand. The real fault for Crysis 2 lies within the creative choices made by developer Crytek. They wanted a game more similar to the by then very popular CoD games. Linear story and linear levels, small scale multiplayer matches. CoD: MW2 sold incredibly well and Crytek tried to jump the "CoD train", but they totally missed. They should have kept the old formular of Crysis 1 with the enormous story missions and huge multiplayer battles similar to how the multiplayer of Battlefield once was.

In the trailer you saw how you could disassemble trees and houses ... how the trees fell down ... WOW !!! Then it was time, Cryisis appeared and I had it ... but no falling trees or destructible houses !!! My PC was too weak, AHHHHH. Cryisis was one of the few games that bought me new hardware. The game was great, I really liked it and considering how old it is, it still looks brilliant. In addition, there are really good HiRes mods that make the whole thing a little nicer

I found Far Cry to be far more impressive in 2004 than Crysis was in 2007. The market was saturated with a lot of high quality shooters and we had already played STALKER, Prey, FEAR, Call of Juarez and Bioshock. TF2 had also just come out. Crysis would have been forgotten quickly if it wasn't for the hardware-torturing graphics.
