Just an idea for a next video: The south African runner Mbuleli Mathanga ran a 13:47 on the track 5K with vaporfly's because spikes hurt his legs. He became criticised for it and to silence his critics he ran a 28:24 10K on his bare feet to win the race from his spike wearing competition.

@@abone2pick I agree that embarrassing isn’t the right word to use, but they came through 800m over 4:30 pace if I remember right. Most solid highschool runners could probably hold with that pace until around 1000-1200 when it really starts picking up. I think it’d be embarrassing if they ran the entire 1500 in like 4:15 and no one ever turned on the gas, but that last 400m more than made up for it imo.

Cheruiyot has to be the favorite. But I am very, very curious about what time Cole Hocker has in him. You get the sense he is only starting to tap into his potential. His kick in the final 100m in the NCAA 3k final was stunning. It would have been stunning in any circumstance, but it was double stunning given that he had run a 3:53 mile an hour earlier. And he's 19!

Jakob is still 20. El Guerrouj didn't beat Morceli until 1997 when he was 22. In 1995 and 1996 Morceli was running the final 400 in 50,51,52s in almost every big race. He was dominating El G and everyone else over last lap. Morceli didn't beat Aouita until he was 21. I have no doubt that Jakob will win many races and many medals in his career. The question is can he beat Cheruiyot in Tokyo. I don't know - that's why they run. Think it will be an awesome race - and I believe it could be a new Olympic record. Why? I think Cheruiyot's best strategy is to take it out fast like he did in the 2019 World Championships - he opened with a 55.01 then a 56.73 and closed final 400 in 54.76. If you're interested in seeing the men's 1500 m Olympic record - check it out. It's a great race in 2000. Medal winners include Lagat, El G and Ngeny.

A world record most likely will not happen at the Olympics. It usually never happens in middle distance racing except for the 800. Usually, the 1500 is run with pacers that help the athletes pace themselves to a solid but not suicidally fast pace. Pacers aren't at the Olympics. The Olympic record will probably fall, but not the world record. Only one guy went under 3:30 at the most recent world championships. I think the race will be tactical, but also fast. TRP Yes, you are correct. The Men's 1500m at the Olympics will be a fantastic race. As you said, there are a number of athletes capable of winning. It will come down to the tactics used in the final. Needing to race a Heat, Semi and then a Final also has a bearing. It means those with good strength/stamina plus Speed will be required just to make the final. There is also another factor than many of your viewers will dispute. (I'm sure!) The results of almost all the Indoor races can be discounted when assessing their chances at the Olympics. (Obviously run outdoors and a full sized 400m track. No banking.) Plus, a good 95% or more of middle distance athletes simply don't bother to race indoors. Perhaps every two years they may make an effort in time for world indoor champs on behalf of their sponsors. Otherwise they simply don't bother. Americans place far too much emphasis on Indoor Results. Look at the all-time results of 1500m, mile, 3000m and 5000m raced Indoors. The tables are heavily overly dominated by Americans. Particularly in the women's grades. Why is this? As I stated, it's simply because very few international middle distance runners bother to race Indoors. I'm really looking forward to these Olympics. For me, it will be from 800m and up in both Male and Female. Fantastic battles. Cheers.

I can't see anyone beating Timothy, he has the kick to hold anyone off. Jakob a close second I think. I'd love to see Jake Wightman get a medal but it will be tough. Whoever wins, I'm sure it will be an amazing race. I'm going to book 2 weeks off work so I can watch it all. Come on!

Cheruiyot will win the 1500. But my question is why is it necessary to have such a great finishing kick. An even split race to finish in 3:30 will likely win this race. And even split race will put a great deal of pressure on Cheruiyot if Ingebrigtsen wants to win it and no need for the great kick....just don't slow down as much as the competition.

Unless he breaks a leg between now and this summer - Cheryiot will will. The one thing I've noticed with Ingebrigtsen, and maybe it's because he's still pretty young, he doesn't have a great finishing kick when he's going against the big guns. He gets outkicked every single time. You either have fast twitch for a great finishing kick - or you don't. You can't train that into someone.

As the video quite rightly points out, there are quite a few capable of winning the 1500m in Tokyo and we all have our favourite(s). Every contender will have a great backstory to be told if they win so the news channels won't be disappointed....we shall all just have to be patient and look forward to seeing what happens....I can't wait.

Cheriyot what he did in Doha in last year's WC is pretty convincing. Well that combined with his 1:43.1 800 PB. I could see him falling in the final and still winning it. I think he will break the WR.

@HB Net the last 15 year's❔ we re talking about the Olympics. He's probably one of the best 1500m runners EVER. He was within a second of the WR what 3X and blazed the last lap. Are you blind? Showed that once in the video. Ethiopians being world contenders in the 1500. Now I know you're crazy. 1500 is going to stay American/Kenyan/western euro dominated. The occasional Kiwi/ Ethiopiaan/Rooskie

@HB Net maybe French is your main language. I didn't say he was the most prized or prestigious. I said he's probably the best. As in if Hicham raced him Idk if I would bet Hicham would be the winner I wouldn't bet or either and if I had to bet I'd honestly go with Churiyout.

@HB Net and yes Kenyans are not as dominant but as you can see I listed half of Europe America Australia New Zealand. Kenyans have always been historically more dominant in long distance. Mainly 10k steeplechase XC. 1500 has never been there bread and butter. I don't recall any Ugandans or Ethiopians who medaled in the 1500 outside of Bekele. The Ethiopians tend to historically dominant 5k. They pretty much werw great rivals of Kenyans in distances above 3k. Ugandans seem the same. Basically Africa can produce elite 1500 guys but much less frequent than 5 & 10k etcetera. Half the time it's a Moroccan or from southern Africa. White guys and African Americans have a good tradition of success in middle distance 800 to 2 mile.

@HB Net I was wrong about Kenyan dominance in the 800/1500. Kenyan has the most medals. Also Ethiopia has the most for 10k. Steeple chase is Kenya's niche track event though. Total domination over the past 50 years. I still stand by in saying I doubt an Ethiopian man will medal in the 1500 any time soon.

Just because a runner does tremendous times in paced races on the Grand Prix circuit doesn't necessarily make an athlete a potential gold medalist. Most recent Olympic 1500 races have not been fast paced from the gun. 800 speed and the ability to accelerate are as important in championship racing as fast pbs.

Matthew Centrowitz already hit his peak fitness a long time ago. He won’t be a contender for a medal. Also, he never wins or a podium finish for fast races. He runs slow paces and a fast kick. It’s obvious this Olympics will be a fast race from the gun. He was super lucky 2016 was a DII 1500 pace-slowest Olympic final ever. The podium will be Timothy, Jakob and either the Australian gentlemen or perhaps Kerr or Whiteman.

Oregan runners carries an asterisk, and a large one at that. World records being broken and apparently so many athletes being able to run faster than before, well a nice helping of skepticism is called for. Other than that the spectacle can be enjoyed. Just don't take it too seriously.

Looking ahead, Jakob and Timothy trade wins at DL events leading up to Tokyo. Each post 3 times times under 3:30; each post PBs. Jakob wins Monaco with a new ER of 3:27.31. In Tokyo, the race is tactical with a lot of jostling for position in the first lap, with Timothy in front of Jakob by 10m. Jakob winds up the pace and falls in directly behind Timothy. With 200m to go, it is just the two of them. Jakob starts his kick, edging past Timothy in the last turn, and switches into top speed. Timothy follows close with long strides, but Jakob has the momentum and takes the gold in a close and masterful race. Jakob Inbebrigtsen, Gold 3:28.70; Timothy Cheriuyot, Silver 3:28.82; Stewart McSweyn, Bronze 3:30.32 Well, we can dream about it :-) :-)

Actually, it's not surprising that performances have improved worldwide. Why? Quite simply, athletes in general have not over-raced. Many top athletes spend a lot of time racing and fitting training in between races. So, may athletes have had to use racing as a major element in training and not the other way round

Why does he think there are a long list of up to 10 athletes with any chance in the 1500? It's Cherioyut or Ingbebrigtsen. There isn't anyone else. And Jacob is still only 20 so he hasn't hit his best years yet. He's going to be faster in a few years. Once that happens he will be by himself and win any race he wants. Now he can win quite easily against everybody except Cherioyut, who just has to hope that Jacob doesn't improve any more before Tokyo. Personally I think this is the year that Jacob becomes #1. He will win the 1500 or the 5000. He's good enough to win the 5000 as well but the schedule will probably prevent him from running in both unfortunately. (rounds in both on Tuesday; 1500 SF on Thurs. ; 5000 final on Friday. 1500 final on Saturday). Who knows. He runs a pretty tight schedule at Europeans and wins both.

I believe he should focus on the 1500 if he wants to win something. In the 5000 there's just too many incredible runners (Cheptegei and Kiplimo, if they don't only compete in the 10000, Barega, Edris, Ahmed ecc). Plus, the last time Jakob ran a 5000 on the track was at the 2019 world championships. That makes me think he decided not to focus on them for a while. But I believe from next year on he'll be back on the 5000 with a lot of room for improvement

I say if Jakob can make it an all out sprint at 450m mark after increasing the pace every lap, he can beat Cheruiyot. If he can drain the beast's legs a bit and make his move 50m sooner I think he can win it with Cheruiyot about 2m behind. But if it just goes as a normal race...Cheruiyot probably has the advantage. So I'm going to be optimistic and say Jakob turns loose a brilliant strategy and takes him down for the Gold. He's clearly got all the talent required to win, it just requires a few things to go correctly because Cheruiyot has those same qualities as well.
