The real question, is the price. If it's for the same price and tastes effectively the same or better, then that's fine. If it's higher price though to go for the vegan option, (as it usually is from what I've seen), then is it worth the increase?
@no_activity3 жыл бұрын
No, it's not. Vegetable ingredients are often cheaper to produce than the equivalent quality of meat, so charging more for vegan options is often a scam designed to separate vegans from their money.
@Glarth-WC3 жыл бұрын
@@no_activity While that may be somewhat true. I do debate how much of it is that(if any really) and how much of it is basic economics. 90% of you customer base is likely ordering the meat product and so it's therefore much more expensive to purchase stock and prepare a vegan option considering to be truly vegan it will need it's own separate equipment to avoid cross contamination as well(otherwise what's the point anyway). When you consider the R&D budget that goes into/went into making plant products effectively taste enough like meat to fool meat eaters it's no longer just mashed beans in a patty the product is remarkably more expensive than just basic veg and potentially much more so than the typical bottom tier meat they use for fast food.

Next time I go to Dunkin Donuts I'm asking if they have any meat donuts

This was great, do more vegan taste tests, get a large variety of vegan and meat burgers and just choose the best one

So you mention every other burger brand except the actual one it is. Negative product placement? I actually did this exact burger test in November last year and the difference was obvious.

Why didn't they toast the bread for sausages?
@batt3ryac1d3 жыл бұрын
using fast food to do these taste tests is basically cheating cause even the meat ones already taste of cardboard. not to imply there's anything wrong with the vegan ones but if you were comparing a decent sausage to a decent fake sausage it'd still be obvious. I doubt you could tell the doughnuts apart easily though sugar is sugar is sugar, maybe the texture would be slightly different cause they're leavened different but I don't think it'd be that much.

I find the density and structure of food is a give away as is the feel and the overall effect, for example meat has a certain resistance or give that means it has a coarse texture and also some fibre too. Taste and flavour is important but is only part of the picture. Density can spoil a food very easily and make it hard to swallow or enjoy. Make a cake too dense and you will know it, not nice to eat or enjoyable.

I've had regular Whoppers from Burger King and I've also had the plant-based version. Maybe it's just me, but texture-wise I didn't really notice anything different except that maybe the plant-based one was a little more dry. Unfortunately for the pursuit of useful data, it wasn't a significant difference and could have just been due to someone overcooking it.

Meat has no fibre whatsoever.

I've never had a Gregg's sausage roll. I also go for the beef and veg pasties. Or Cornish to the Brits

With highly processed foods being mostly added flavour anyway, I'm not surprised they're able to get close.

I visited Britain a while back, and lasted only one day before I tried Greggs. Can't believe this was James May's first time

I love how vegan food is slowly overtaking standard food :) And I could not agree more, took a long time but finally vegan junk food is not only junk but makes you happy. Nice to see how open minded James and the crew is

Dunno about 'slowly overtaking' lol

It definitely is NOT overtaking standard food.

Was the Greggs sausage roll still hot when you ate it? Because when hot they are pretty comparable but cold the vegan one is disgusting.

For sure, but then any old cold sausage roll is pretty yuck

I tried a vegan Whopper recently, but i still prefer the beef one. Although, i like that the vegan burger has no chance of me biting on some piece of cartilage or bone, which is always a big annoyance, but i wasn't a fan of the texture or added flavors to the patty. It tasted as if they put some asian dinner in a blender, and dipped the vegan patty in it, the seasoning felt way more exotic than i expected. Again, it was not actually bad tasting, but it was not what i expect from a beef patty. And this one was also kinda dry, then again, so was the beef one, the bread also made it more dry. Honestly, i've become a bigger McDonald's eater over the years, i used to be a regular at our Burger King's, but they closed stores in my town for years, they came back recently, but the times i ordered there, it was either not prepared properly or just underwhelming in taste. I do like the simple ingredients, but the bread is always too brittle, making the eating of a Whopper a mess and a race against time before the bread disintegrates. McDonald's might be overmanufactured, but i've been liking their stuff more, Quarter Pounder is still my favorite even after BK opened up again, but my absolute favorite was our local Maestro Burger, with Angus beef, Old Amsterdam cheese, red onion rings and poppy seeds on the bun, too bad it was a temporary thing.

It’s people who say vegan substitutes “taste the same” what ruin it. They do not at all, but doesn’t mean the vegan ones don’t taste nice.
