Maybe, but if so that's not very impressive? 1:1 is 50% water? Vodka can be lit at 60% water 40% alcohol. Considering the price, might it not be equally if not more effective to just buy the equivalent cost of methylated spirits+ gasoline and use those to dilute the water in something more flammable? You can likely buy 10 times the quantity for the same price and even if technically inferior could probably brute force the issue with sheer quantity

The cloudy appearance of the HEET mix was the best indication it was going to be the most effective. It means it is suspending the most water in the gasoline.

These products only work on water that is actually absorbed by the fuel through the atmosphere, i.e. at a maximum amount of around 0.5%. You can't just pour in a load of water and expect the products to convert it into fuel. 'Phase separation' refers to the water that has been absorbed, i.e. the 0.5% separating out from the fuel with the ethanol. It doesn't refer to the huge chunk of water that you just added separating out from the fuel and taking the ethanol with it. Nothing can stop that nor do any of these products claim to. I suggest the experiment be repeated, this time slowly adding water a few drops at a time, shaking it in between until it can absorb no more, i.e. gasoline that is saturated with water but no excess in the bottom. Apart from that one modification, repeat the tests as before and I think you will find these products work exactly as claimed and intended.

I was going to post the same thing, there was simply too much water for anything to work. I mean that high of a gas/water mix seems unlikely with reasonable care taken by the owner. I really can't think of a reasonable real world situation aside from rainwater in a fuel tank or getting a bad batch of gas which is rare. I do understand and appreciate the purpose of worst case scenario testing shown here. Bottom line really seems to me to be if you think you need any of these products its probably too late

exactly!! water to fuel ratio in this video is unrealistic in a fuel tank and is way beyond the performance envelope of these products. It's like saying this product treats a 20 Gallon tank, but if you put 19 gallons of water, nothing will make it cumbust ... except maybe lithium !!!

1:16 seems like an awful high water concentration to expect a fuel stabilizer to combat, as far as phase separation is concerned. I would have been more convinced by volumetric tests examining how much water could be added to each treated sample before phase separation occurred.

I suggest you use a less water during the separation test. You added about 10-20% of water which is way to much compared to realistic conditions. I mean: Having several liters of water in a fuel tank would be concerning. The ability of the additives to form an emulsion is limited. Maybe add 5% water, that could change the results. One of the jars was cloudy which means something different was dispersed in each of the layers.

As I mentioned in my other post, you have to add more isopropyl alcohol than there is water. If its cold you might have to add 3x more. 5% water is doable with isopropyl alcohol with enough of it (0.5% would be something like a cup of water in the tank and wouldn't require the gas to be 15% alcohol), I don't know any other additive which can blend 5% water with gasoline.

@@joeserdynski1045 I've done my own experiments, and you can find research with ternary diagrams for isopropyl alcohol, hydrocarbons and water if you know where to look. It just doesn't work in the conditions Project Farm used (which are absolute worst-case conditions). The K100 might be useful if it lives up to the exact claims, that is, spontaneously dissolving 1% water into gasoline (and probably not at subzero temperatures) using 10% K100 (yes, 1/10 a full tank of gas which can be GALLONS of K100). But you can't just scale it up for say 20% water at subzero temperatures, solutions don't work that way. You may end up needing more additive than gasoline.

Here in Southern Ontario, Canada, condensation of water in fuel tanks is an ongoing winter problem. First, to prevent condensation keep your fuel tank at least half full when standing overnight. Secondly, use a fuel antifreeze additive regularly to prevent a buildup of water in the fuel tank; methyl alcohol (also known as methanol, wood alcohol, methyl hydrate and several other names), ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol can be used singly or as mixtures. Thirdly, if your fuel has frozen, chemicals dumped in the fuel tank can not get to the ice in the fuel line; the only solution is to heat the fuel line, preferably by moving the vehicle indoors, until the line thaws. For more info on these chemicals see Wikipedia entries for methanol, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. Yes, I am a Chemist.

The purpose of these additives isn't really to make water burn, though, in spite of the silly slogan on one of them. Their real purpose is to make small amounts of water mix with fuel so it flows through the fuel system without causing disruptions. For example, without such an additive, small amounts of water in the gas, usually from condensation, will puddle in the bottom of a carburetor bowl and eventually stall the engine. With such an additive, it will simply be pulled through with the fuel, be vaporized when the fuel is burned, and go harmlessly out the exhaust. These products all made a valiant effort to do this, but he overwhelmed their capacity with unreasonable and unrealistic amounts of water. With small amounts of water these are meant to disperse, I have no doubt they all work. Looking at his results, I would put ISO-heet as the strongest, followed by K100. K100 could potentially also be safer for fuel systems, since it contains no alcohol, albeit isopropyl alcohol is one of the less corrosive alcohols.

@ambulocetusnatans
@ambulocetusnatans 6 жыл бұрын
To be fair, none of those products were designed to be used with that much water. At the ratio you used, it would be like you had so much water in the tank that there's no way any additive could help. One way you could re-do this experiment would be to get an old gas tank and make sure it's clean, then fill it up with very cold gasoline and wait for it warm up with the cap off. Then the temperature change would cause condensation. Then drain the tank and measure how much condensation this made. Then adjust the ratio on the small scale experiment to accurately reflect the conditions a real car is likely to encounter in a typical winter. I mean it only takes a little bit of water in your fuel line to screw it up, so maybe one of these products would work just enough to help with that. Not sticking up for the companies; just that accuracy and repeatability are important in science.

No disrespect, but he's tested the ability of various hammers to drive screws. This test does not represent how these products were intended to be used, so it's no surprise that they didn't perform as advertised. Having looked at the ingredients, I can assure you that K100 and ISO-Heet do work when used as intended. I'd like to see more testing on StarTron, but a mechanic friend has seen it work when used as intended, so I trust it too.

I play around with e85 a lot over the years... When I wash a gritty fuel tank out with water I'll finish it off by shaking some ethanol around in there to absorb the water, then I rinse and repeat. I haven't done this specific test, but I'd be willing to bet adding around 50% ethanol to your gas may get that volume of water to blend...... Maybe..... I should try. I thought it would because the main problem with e10 fuel is that there is so little ethanol present that it's easy to contaminate and drop out....

I have a suggestion for a new product test for engines! There is a company called XADO (don't know if it's available on your country) and they have several product with a "revitalizing" effect. According to them and many tests, it builds up a metal-ceramic layer on top of the engine parts and improves compression, power and reduces oil consumption. Maybe you could test their products and if they really hold up to what they promise. A good product for the engine would be the "XADO AMC maximum 1 stage". But they also sell a product called SnipeX, which (according to them) improves the accuracy of weapons.

Germans had super-tight tolerances on their airplane engines. The oil turned to wax and they used extreme measures to preheat before they could start. Russians has sloppy tolerances and also learned quickly to add gasoline to their crankases at end-of-day. The Russians took off before dawn and destroyed the enemy planes on the ground, while the Germans ran away from their preheating operations. In Ohio it got down to minus 27F in early 1990. Engine could not crank. I poured home fuel oil into engine (22R) and shined heat lamps for an hour and it started right up. The fuel oil, normally like diesel fuel, poured like a 5W-20 oil.

@ 6:50 - The bottle with the fuel in it was capped off with a white lid. Did that lid have a hole in it? If not, then the fuel would have had trouble flowing down, which could cause the generator to stop running due to lack of fuel. The reason I ask is because I find it odd that generator shut itself off at about 30 seconds with every fuel+additive+water mixture. Usually, the additives have different levels of flammability which SHOULD have caused the generator to run longer or shorter.

I was adding about a half gallon premixed coolant every other day, or every trip more than 50 miles. Wondering if the other products work as well... Can't beat the value on black pepper! Keep it in the garage for a sandwich and an overheating car! Your videos are always fantastic, and I've made better decisions when purchasing stuff based on this content! EDIT: before anyone has a chance to tell me how dumb I am for not fixing the system, my weekend project this week will be replacing the cracked radiator. Already purchased and in the garage.

I feel like if u would run the experiment again and shake the mixtures while adding water slowly u would get a better result. I'm a boat mechanic and I deal with this problem a lot and water and gasoline will only mix with slow drops and not just immediately poured in. Now if u run the mixtures through the engine with water added to the mix the ratio of fuel,water and k100 or any of the other products will prove if it actually works

I like the fact that we have some very knowledgeable in here . This make for a more precise test by knowing what could of been done for a better test ETC. Even if there was too much water added, we have a good picture of which additive work the best. I would of been surprised if the motor would have run with that much water.

Very good! I love this channel. Remember back when gasoline first hit 2.50 and then 3.00+ per gallon? Hell, I remember when it was 1.00 per gal and cigarettes where 50 cent per pack. Anyway, I had an 89 Dodge Dakota, regular cab long bed, something I'd fight for to have again. This was a 318 throttle body injected test bed. I can't find anything even close now-a-days. This was a good truck, a daily driver. I refused to pay 3 let alone 4 buck per gallon when we all knew there aint not one single reason for the price jump, aside from, they can and so you will....! I ran my poor Dakota on cheap fuel and water and rubbing alcohol. I put so much water through that poor thing, I'd mix 1 gal of water per every 4 gal of gasoline, then add 2 bottles of rubbing alcohol and I would just drive anywhere I needed to go. This was like I said, my daily driver. When I let it sit for a couple of days, I had a hard time getting it started, then I ultimately had to drop the tank and get the water out of it, add fresh fuel and all was good to go. Your visual show and tell is what was happening in my tanks of fuel. As long as I would drive every day it was fine, low on power but otherwise fine. When it sat a couple days is when I began to have issues. I miss that truck even still today cause I no longer have one. That was my test bed for many projects, and I sold it solid except for the body which is the only reason I sold it! Here in the rust belt, that frame was fine, the poor body is what let go. I miss that truck sometimes!

Try some Everclear. Available at your local Liquor Store. Fairly expensive, too. I ran it through my tractor once to clear out the water that was left over after draining thee tank one year. Heavy dosage, though. One fifth to about 3 gallons. In fact, now that I think about it, how much water can you put into Everclear before it won't burn?

I am wondering if the tank (glass bottle) was vented to accept outside air? The filler cap on all lawn mowers and tractors require the cap to be vented otherwise a vacuum will exist in the tank preventing the fuel from getting into the carburetor. I bought a used lawn tractor from a friend who was a mechanic that had the tractor come in for repair and it would run great for several minutes to 1/2 hour then would shutdown. What I found was the fuel cap had some dirt get into the fuel vent causing a vacuum in the tank which stalled the fuel flow. This was easy to find out when I pulled the carburetor fuel bowl off of the carburetor. No fuel would come out of the fuel line which was caused by the clogged vent in the cap. Drilling a larger hole in the vent cured the problem. Water in the fuel especially a diesel engine duel supply is a big problem versus a gasoline engine on a tractor. Best to drain the carburetor, shut the fuel supply off and make sure the tank is topped off and the vent sealed off when the tractor is put in storage for the winter. Alcohol blended fuel tends to draw moisture if left in a fuel tank exposed to outside air. The sealed tanks on the newer cars is a good idea to prevent this. Keeping the fuel topped off during the winter can prevent the problem. I once got a charge of water in my fuel from a gas station the had their storage tanks leaking water into the tank and it took about 5 bottles of Heet to get the fuel dried out. A few months later, the station removed the storage tanks and put in new fiberglass tanks so I wasn't the only person who complained about water in their fuel. Thanks for your review!

Thank you. Yes, the cap does indeed have several small holes. I've used it in several other videos.

The separated layer in the K100 seems to be water plus additive which may be better at preventing corrosion and may run better when a lawnmower or whatever is bouncing around and keeping everything mixed up.

Project Idea: Test the performance and effects of old gas. This could be a long term project where you take fuel and distribute it into 5 containers and let them age. You could have a 6 month 12 month 18 month 2 year and 5 year batch (depending on how long you want to run this channel, lol). Would be cool to see the difference in combustion and power under load, as well as any effects on the carb. If the timing is prohibitive, then perhaps we could look into the process that causes gas to go bad and artificially speed it up for the sake of squeezing out videos a bit more rapidly.

I’m originally from UK. I emigrated a few years ago but I believe that all their petrol is minimum 5% ethanol now due to the government laws about renewable fuel. A lot of people are against this because they say it causes rubber seals to wear out earlier. What’s your opinion on this?

Great point. I'm testing it now but it'll take 6 months to a year to see if it causes damage.
