The US Constitution created the US Federal government in 1789. Before that time there were 13 independent states. Small states refused to join the United States if the US Federal government would be dominated by a few large states. Therefore the Senate and the electoral college were created to give voters in small states superpower in the Federal government. Then all 13 states ratified the Constitution. What this means today is that for no logical reason a resident of Wyoming has much more influence in the US Federal government than a resident of California. In theory, the entire US Constitution should be completely revised. State governments should probably be abolished. However that would mean that some people now in power would need to voluntarily give up that power. That seems unlikely.

America's Electoral College is an antiquated, anti-democratic system that prevents the US from reliably electing a president by popular vote - Republicans have won the popular vote once out of the last 24 years of presidential elections, yet they have held the White House for 12 years within that same time period. The EC has always given outsized power to less populous states, which has screwed up our national politics. This is the reason why America's leadership structure can swing wildly from something that looks stable, to something that looks like its staffed by incompetent and/or deranged politicians.

Jacon Stein does a good job explaining. It only remains to note that the vote of a citizen of Wyoming or Vermont is worth more than 80 Californians and that the Electoral College was a part of a package of reassuring measures against "the tyranny of the mob" asserting too much power which included the declaration that slaves counted toward the head count for the House of Representatives as 3/5 a person, without the franchise. State electoral votes are 2 (for Senators) and the number of representatives. So the less populous South (except Virginia) was advantaged in two ways. That we never got to cleaning this up is just another original sin left from the Founders. They surely could not have foreseen, though, that with 2 presidents elected without the popular vote in 20 years, and the confirmation from the Senate which in the meantime has 56% of its seats elected by 40% of the population, 5 of our 9 Supreme Court justices have no validation through the populous.

Its not that bad. Its state by state. Whatever side wins in a state, makes that entire state considered that side. Depending on population, each state is given a predetermined number of votes. That number is what matters. You add up all the numbers from each state and whoever is higher wins

But instead of just counting all the votes from every student directly, each class picks a representative. This representative then goes to a meeting with representatives from all the other classes, and they all vote together to decide which game to play. Each state has a certain number of electors based on how many people live there, kind of like how bigger classes might get more votes in the school example. These electors then meet and vote to decide who will be president. Usually, the electors vote the same way that most people in their state did, but not always. So, the Electoral College is like a group of people who make the final decision on who gets to be president, based on how people in their states voted.

Regarding the “agreed” debate/s between Harris and Trump, I just want to offer this very simple set of rules that will show the audience who each participant really is and what they know/understand and what they offer. No more Trump rhetoric’s of name calling and shallow responses that is always off point. So, here is the format for what I believe would result in a fair and constructive “debate” that will be provide audiences clarity for who they should support be the next President of the United Staes. 1. Each participant will table 8 questions for the other side to respond to. 2. The responder MUST answer or respond to point of the question where they have a full 5-minutes on the clock. 3. If the responder goes off point and begins to ramble on…the “moderators” will (a) Switch the mic off and (b) stop the clock and (c) cast a warning or “red card” for the breach. 4. On any one question, the respondent will be given 2 warnings. 5. On the 3rd warning, the moderator will turn the mic off and explain that the respondent has been breached the rules 3 times and will loose all the remaining time they have left. And further declare that the respondent is either unwilling or unable to properly give the people of the US and the audiences a direct response to a direct question. 6. At the end of each question and answer, the presenting station/program can show the results of how the “live” audiences Liked or Disliked the response. This can be done via some kind of phone or dial in participation? Hope someone will take this idea up!
