Acommon question for PKD: Is KETO appropriate if you have liver cysts? What is the best diet for PKD?
Jessianna Saville and Diana Bruen discussion this nutrition strategy.
Polycystic kidney disease can sometimes result in liver cysts as well. With the emerging science that a ketogenic diet can be helpful in reducing kidney cyst size in PKD, what about for those who also have liver cysts? Is there any contraindication for ketogenic diets in that situation?
Find answers to these questions and see where the science is headed in this discussion.
If you have PKD (or know someone who does), please share this post with them. And then head over to begin the patient application at Kidney Nutrition Institute. This lets our admin team match you to the best dietitian for you.

Hi Jessianna and Diana, thanks for talking about liver cysts. I had an ultra sound recently that found liver cysts, I also have a lump accidentally found on my lung. I’m having tests on my lung, that too maybe a cyst. I suffer indigestion , fever and itchy skin, which comes and goes. Eating sugar and carbs upset my liver, a change of diet is a must for me.

I know research is on-the-go on this puzzling topic. Would love to see some questions on people with PKD who are already on dialysis. Of course scientific evidence might not exist, but even intuition might help some patients to do some experiments with themselves since they have little to lose anyway. Keep up the good work, thanks!!!

How does alcohol play into all this. Is the classic 2 glasses of wine still OK generally? Thanks for these videos, seriously, thank you!!!

It very much depends on the person when it comes to recommendations with alcohol. In general small amounts don't drive liver disease unless the liver is already pretty compromised. But alcohol can react with meds, even in small amounts, so make sure and check with your physician or pharmacist if alcohol needs to be considered any meds! Thanks for your comment!

Will it bother you, if you take Lactulose

For individuals with PKD, the use of lactulose should be approached with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare provider or your dietitian.

My doctor ,will only give me Orlastat caps ,I don't drink at all ,but found out 2 years ago ,that I have liver cysts ,I'm 69 years old and want to use Keto ,is it safe for me?.

I am not a doctor, but I can provide some general information. It's important to consult with your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your diet, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or are taking medications like Orlistat. Regarding the ketogenic (keto) diet, some studies suggest potential benefits such as weight loss and improved metabolic markers. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, and its safety for individuals with liver cysts or other liver conditions is something you should discuss with your healthcare provider. Given that you have liver cysts and are taking Orlistat, which is a medication that can affect fat absorption, it's crucial to have a comprehensive discussion with your doctor. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history, current medications, and specific health needs. In general, a well-balanced and varied diet is essential for overall health. If you're considering dietary changes, your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian can help you develop a plan that meets your nutritional needs while considering your medical conditions and medications. Remember, individual health situations can vary, and professional medical guidance is crucial for making informed decisions about your diet and lifestyle.
